Recent Problem. High Ping.

So, I've had FiOS for years now. My family subscribed to it when it was very new. I've never really had a problem. My download is not as much as I would like it to be. The most I've downloaded at a time is maybe 620kb/s, but that really doesn't even bug me. The real problem is this high amount of ping that I have been getting recently, only during the day. I do have a decent amount of devices connected, but they're not all on. The only things that are really connected at one time is my computer and two laptops used by my nephews. Usually I could tell when one of them was downloading something because my ping would be high and lag would be horrible on online games. All that I would have to do was wait it out, but that wasn't a big deal. The big deal now is that even when they aren't downloading (I am not either) the ping remains constantly high, in the 300's to 400's, sometimes maxing out at 600. The only time it runs smoothly is late at night (around 11:00 PM) and early mornings (up until around 12:00 PM). I'm not sure if there is a problem with my router and it's not distributing the bandwith correctly or what. I've downloaded the in home agent, optimized my settings, updated my router, checked all my settings, etc. Really out of ideas.

Well thanks for the input everyone. I guess if the problem gets out of hand, I'll try calling or contacting someone. For some reason it's fine today, so, we'll see.

I also got that problem, Except it started around 1-2 in the morning and went back to normal somtime later while i was sleeping. Now it's bad all the time and it's hard to do anything that requires a good ping.

Yes, it is frustrating. This whole problem does not interfere with downloading or anything with a dedicated server really. I only have problems with certain games, as you said, that require ping to be good, games that use Peer to Peer.

many many possibilities.

First. Lets start with a tracert. See if there is anything obvious there. (I'm assuming you've already tried rebooting and resetting your router)

Post a tracert and we will take a look at it.

Should I wait until a time when the problem begins? Also, where should I test it, just any domain? I've never really done a tracert so, I'm not exactly sure what you will need to be looking for.

now that you're on ethernet - slap you're own router on there temporarily. like a linksys or a dlink.

the verizon routers have a notoriously small nat table and that was increased in the later revisions but it is still smaller than that of a dlink or linksys.

take advantage of it while you have ethernet connection and see if that is the problem.

also when the problem happens live go into your router under network connections or my network (wherever it is that you see your devices) And start disabling them one by one and test. leave your connection live obviously, but I bet you will find it's one pc that is causing the entire network to go to a crawl. if it doesn't make a difference then its easier for you to throw the ball in VZ's court. right now they have it in your court.

its def not the computers i get lag on my xbox 360 when nothing else is connected to my router i completely turn the wireless off and still get latency with my xbox or labtop connected through the ethernet cable so its definetely not any computer in my house creating the issue and if im hardwired through an ethernet cable is the router still an option for being the issue?

After many calls to tech support and still no resolution could anybody tell me how or why whhen i run a speedtest.net it comes back at 15 download 10 upload when i am set up to have only 15/5 could this be any signs of issues? My priority is fixing my high latency can this some how be connected to parts of my issues?

Upload speeds are a little quirky. Verizon frequently "over provisions" their upload side to make sure you get what your paying for. Many see speeds in excess of what they are actually paying for.

As for if that is a problem for what you are seeing, the answer is no. Your speed has nothing to do with the high pings that you see. No those are related to routers on the network. speed has very little to do with ping.
