MI424WR Coax connection died

My MI424WR's coax interface stopped working suddenly. In the log on the router (accessed via telnet) I see this:

Aug 31 18:48:22 2007 kern.notice Clink CPU Failed to Start
Aug 31 18:48:22 2007 kern.notice Clink Download Firmware failed
Aug 31 18:48:22 2007 kern.err reset failed

This repeats over and over and doesn't clear up with power cycling. The GUI was very sluggish until I disabled the coax interface. The configuration had not been changed in well over a year. Anyone seen this before? It looks like a hardware problem to me, but everything else (wireless, 100base-T, management) works fine.

Assuming it is a hardware problem, is there a trick to bypass level 1 tech support so I can talk to someone who might understand this?

Update: It took over an hour on the phone (mostly on hold) but Verizon will be sending me a replacement unit.

The phone support process is still frustrating. FIOS isn't a new service anymore, and yet I still had to provide my account information 3 times (to the IVR, to the 1st rep, then to the 2nd rep). As in my previous experiences though, once I finally got connected to the right person they were helpful. I guess that's better than a really efficient support organization that just blows you off 🙂

I have an idea of something that you can check/do.

#1 In the router go to Advanced -> UPnP OR Advanced -> Universal Plug and Play (which ever exist in your router)

#2 Turn off UPnP in the router.

Please report back if that fixes your issue or not.

Power cycling is not the same as doing a hard reset on the router. If you have not tried a hard reset, you should give that a try. HOld in the reset button on the back for 15 seconds. This sounds like the MOCA chip has failed and a hard reset is unlikely to fix it, but you've got nothing to lose in trying it.

There are two MOCA (clink) interfaces in the router. One for WAN and one for LAN. From the sounds of this, the MOCA LAN chip failed and MOCA LAN is okay. If this is the case, you'll lose VOD, guide data, etc, until you can replace the router. Internet access will continue to work though.

Actually on this unit I'm only using the LAN coax interface. I have another mi424wr that is the gateway, and that one uses both LAN and WAN coax channels. In the meantime I've strung a 50' cat5 between the two routers and everything is working.

I wonder if there is a way to use the WAN coax interface hardware on the LAN coax channel.

Didn't know they had 2 connections, shows how much I studied my router I guess.

You should be able to config the failed router to be a different subnet i.e. not 192.168.1 and a fixed ip address on the wan side on the 192.168.1 subnet. Then connect the WAN port to a coax connector and it will handle dhcp for the new subnet. The downside will be that devices connected to the gateway router on subnet 192.168.1.x will not be able to connect to devices on the new subnet without explicit routing rules on the gateway router. Devices on the secondary router will be able to connect to either subnet.
