Remote Access

I am sure this Topic has been covered before but I can find no specific reference/ solution to my issue. Vz Tech support has been no help.

I have Fios service with Action tec MI424-WR router. I want to access M1 Gold Alarm remotely and have set up rule to fwd port 2601.

I have tried typing in WAN IP address directly into browser . When on my internal network I get router login page which I think is correct. When I am outside my net work I get error message saying "cannot connect"
when I try to use CanYouSeeMe.org I get "Error: I could not see your service on 98.xxx.xxx.98 on port (2601), Reason: Connection refused' Message.
When I ping WAN IP I get successful connection response?

I have tried changing the remote access settings in router to see if this would make a difference and non did. I release it may be my PF rule which I have set up as follows:

Specify Public IP Address (blank)
Networked Computer / Device: (Specify address selected), 192.168.1.9 <IP of the device I want to access>
Protocol
Rule Name Ports Action
PF1
TCP Any -> 2601
Add (none selected)
WAN Connection Type: (all BB devices selected)
Forward to Port: (2601 )
When should this rule occur ?(always)

From reading I know I will need to set up static IP addresses using domain servers but for now I just wanted to test that I could connect remotely. I am new to this so I may be overlooking something. Any direction will be appreciated.

When you say your typing in your WAN IP address, your not typing in 192.168.1.1 are you? This is the LAN gateway address (internal address of the router). Your WAN IP will look something like 172.159.6.139. This is the type of number that you want to type in when you are trying to connect from outside your network.

If you forwarded correctly, that error means the server is not listening.

It would help, to start the server.

I have no idea of how to start that server.

So, we can check some stuff in the router.

#1 In the router go to Advanced -> IP Address Distribution

#2 What is the DHCP Range?

#3 In the router go to Advanced -> UPnP.

#4 If you do not have at least two game consoles behind this two router, turn off UPnP in the router.

By game console, a special type of computer with no keyboard or mouse (and it/they are usually connected to a TV).

Presumably you are using an ELK- M1xep which says

ELK-M1XEP M1 Ethernet Port Interface: Control home or business from a PC browser, anywhere! Elk’s Ethernet Port, M1XEP, allows M1 Controls to be connected to the Internet or LAN (network) for programming, monitoring, remote control, email notifications, etc. The M1XEP has a built-in web server, eliminating the need for a local 24/7 PC server. Broadband connection required for internet access: CableModem, DSL, T1, etc.

By default the web server will be on port 80 did you change it to port 2601? I can find no documentation on how to change it.

It will be using http protocol so to test it from your internal network you should enter

http://192.168.1.9:2601 if you changed the port on the server or just http://192.168.1.9 if you didn't change it.

assuming that works OK then from an external address you would enter

http://your.wan.address:2601 for your.wan.address put in the value that you see from your router admin home page.

Your port forwarding rule looks OK. Port 80 might be blocked in your region.

No i am not using my internal IP address. When i use services uch as ipchicken or canyouseeme my IP adress is 98.117.220.xx. This is the address i am using. Is this not correct?

I too read around and could not find anything to reconfigure. However there is a setting that allows you to specify incoming port and it is set to 2601.

When I use 192.168.1.9:2601 from within the network it results in a timeout error. When I 192.168.1.9 I get to the home page of the web server/ alarm interface page.

I think I am using the right WAN address and it still does not work? Any other ideas...?

I can confirm it is set to 2601

Hmm, it may be set to 2601 but from your earlier message where you say

it's obviously not obeying it and is still listening on port 80

If you change the port forwarding rule for 2601 that you have in the router to make the destination port 80 it should work.

It could also be that you need to reboot/restart the alarm box after making the port change, or you could enquire of the manufacturer how to make it stick.
