Is a digital adapter really needed?

I have comcast currently but we only have digital boxes on 3 tv's. We have two tv's with no box at all.

After the "digital transition" we still get service on these sets. Its not every channel, but enough for

the kitchen and extra room.

It makes me question whether I even need the $3.99 digital adapter for fios. Do you get any channels

with just the cable wire and no box?

The digital transition has nothing to do with Comcast or Verizon. Unless the TV is newer with a QAM tuner, you will need a box on each TV. Comcast has several analog channels still available, that's why you are receiving them. The QAM tuner will get you several local channels, but nothing national like USA Network, etc.

I just checked the tv, which is a pretty old tv. I am getting discovery health, e!, tvland,. nick, usa and others

If fios is the same I will do without the extra boxes and extra expense.

what he means is that the digital transition does not affect cable providers.. it ONLY affect the OVER-THE-AIR transmissions (like from bunny ears)

He also means that Verizon is all digital and without a box from Verizon, you will not get ANY channels, unless you have a QAM/ATSC tuner built into the TV, and even then, you would ONLY get local channels

You will not get those channels on Fios without a box

bob robertson is exactly right.

I did here that verizon gave digital adapters free to existing customers before their conversion. I was misinformed before I signed up for FIOS, complained about, and got them to give me a discount on the digital adapters (needed 3 of them), so that helped soften the blow.

the digital adapters are a joke, if you plan on using them at least twice a week, then I would recommend upgrading to the DB box for the extra $2/month.

Not sure why you say that. If you don't need a guide, VOD, widgets or any other IP functions, the box will do exactly the OP needs for his TIVO (assuming he has a full STB elsewhere to get program information).

changing channels on the digital adapter is slower than watching the grass grow. plus, they are always slow to respond to other commands by the remote. it's just using the digital adapter seems to be a painful process when compared to using a cable card or STB.

I don't use TIVO, so I'm not sure how hooking up the digital adapter to his TIVO would help/hurt. so please excuse my ignorance there.
