USB on DVR

Hi.

I currently have the QIP 7216 Home Media DVR and have a question.

Is there any way to get your recorded programs off of the DVR onto your computer or an external hard disk?

I noticed a USB port on the front and back, as well as an eSATA port on the back of the STB.

When I looked at the user manuals for this STB, it said that "they are application-specific", implying that they are possibly for future use.

I know that with TiVo you can wirelessly access all of your content to your PC with the wireless USB device.

Just curious- right now I just replay everything and record to a standalone DVD recorder.

There is no way to remove the recordings via any of the ports on the FiOS STB. None of these are active including USB, E-SATA, or RJ-45 (IP).

The IEEE-1394 port (if there is one) will work for programs that do not have the broadcast flag set. That being said, all of the nationals (ESPN, Disney, USA, etc.) have the broadcast flag set and the STB respects that flag.

The only way to get them to another media would be to record on an external device while watching using component,S-Video, composite, or RF.

That is what I had read in the manuals.

As well as the Verizon FiOS tech who installed my service said that the RJ-45 port is inactive right now because all local data transfers are done via MoCA.

I also just read about the "DTCP 5C" flagging rule that is employed on non-local broadcasts and the only channels that do not adhere to it are usually CBS, ABC, NBC, and other locals.

I'd imagine they will use them for future use, but thanks for the reply.

Is there a (good?) reason this port doesn't work or why the Firewire port will only pass live TV? As I recall I am the one paying for my service. If ESPN, Disney, USA &c want to pay my bill then we could talk but as it is why do they get to decide what I can do with my equpitment and why is Verizon going along with the flag that hampers users legitimate interests? I'm not trying to be a troll but rubbish like this bugs me.

We reciently switched from Comcast to Verizon and had an issue where we had a video we needed to get off the DVR (my roommate was on TV with the Pope) and it took multiple hours and an expensive piece of third party equpitment why couldn't we just plug the USB or Firewire from the STB into a laptop andsend the file along nice and easy? Why, if something similar were to happen if we ever switch from Verizon, would we be doomed to the same fate?

Welcome to athe age of DRM (Digital Rights Management). The owners of the material are so afraid that you will make copies and distribute them that they came up with HDCP for HDMI, the broadcast flag (which is actually ignored by a lot of equipment), Macrovision, etc.

Remeber, this is not like the old analog signals you used to get, you can make DVD quality (or better) recordings that don't don't degrade.

I don't believe Verizon is going to allow a digital copy to external media that isn't locked to the STB. The post to which you replied was dealing with copying programming from a DVR to a PC or other external device. Yes they may be working on enabling E-SATA in order to increase recording time, but not tot be able to copy to a non-DRM media.

I have a feeling Techman did not really read all of the post. Thats just lazy. I think he was just talking about expantion of disk size via external HDD. If the op wants the show on a PC get a tivo HD they will do that. It transfers slow, but it gets the job done.

The tech that installed mine said the USB port is for an external hard drive. He said once they figure out a way to charge you for that service.

AFAIK that is incorrect. Verizon and Motorola are working on E-SATA for the 7216 with no intentions of enabling USB. No time frames available for when.
