IMG 1.9 release notes and discussion thread

As you probably already know, IMG 1.9 is starting to roll out. FiOS TV's Joe Ambeault posted release notes that may just answer quite a few of your questions. (And here's a link to the press release as well.)

I see that several of you have already started posting about IMG 1.9. Great! We'd love to have a central place to refer people, so we'll be moving IMG posts over to FiOS TV Technical Assistance. That way things are together and you won't have to search as much to find what you're looking for.

Please feel free to post here with your observations, feedback and questions. I'm sure others will chime in to help with questions if they've already run across the answers you're looking for. And it'll save duplicated efforts as well.

This is great news! It was mentioned that... "Motorola 7100 and 7232 set-top boxes as well as Cisco HD capable devices will fill your HDTV screen end-to-end with higher resolution graphics presenting more information per page view." Does this mean that those of us with the 7216 will not have the new graphics?

The new graphics are on ALL the 7xxx series boxes. Not supported on the 6xxx series.

Joe mentions that any DVR will have access to content on any other DVR. He does not mention if the MRDVR option is necessary and if it is necessary, do we need the MRDVR option on all DVRs that share content.

We also received the IMG 1.9 update today. Great new features but now settop box (Motorola Non-DVR HD box) is not responding to the remote controls. We have tried rebooting the settop box but no luck. Anyone else having a problem with the remote controls? And yes new batteries and multiple remotes.

Have you tried pulling the STB power plug for 10 seconds and then plugging it back in? Worth a try if you haven't.

Tried that too, still having problems. Must press RC button 3-4 times before the set top box will acknowledge the RC. TV works on 1st try. RC's worked perfectly up until new release today.

Verizon, I love your service but absolutely HATE this guide update. It may look nice in the screen shots online or on a widescreen HD TV but on my decently large older TV it is entirely awful. I can't read the program names as easily and find that the interface now doesn't suit my needs like the previous one. If there were a way to choose which guide to view that would be amazing. That way those who enjoy the new guide could keep it but those like me who find it to be an very bad set up can have the old guide.

Both of the 2 DVR's we have are model 6416-2. I have seen several people post questions regarding if it will be possible to trade in these for the newer 7xxx 1.9-capable boxes. I haven't seen an answer, I apologize if this has already been addressed, but will it be possible to trade in the 6416's for the newer models that fully implement these new changes? I for one would most be interested in the addition of external HDD's to increase the DVR recording sizes. Recording in HD really fills up the DVR quickly!

Log in at that website and then click on my tv and then set top boxes, and on the right, you'll see a banner ad that says want more from your DVR or something to that affect.

fill out the info and you'll get an email with a link for the upgrade.

you may want to try one of the two auto fixes for the TV

go to www.verizon.com/repair and then select Quick Fix for Set Top Boxes

Or use the TV menu

and go down to customer support, and then in home agent and then auto correct set top boxes.

The above procedure on the website seems to work. For me however, the way I did it was:

1. Log into MyVerizon

2. Click on the My STB tab.

3. At the bottom of the list of STBs, click on See Full List. (for whatever reason, this step was necessary to see the ad, it may not be now)

4. To the right of the list of STBs you should see an ad titled "Want more from your FiOS DVR?", click on the Learn More button.

5. You should now see a page where you can enter your info.

That is the way I ordered mine, ordered it one week got the email telling me I qualified for the new DVR the next. Submitted the email about noon on Wed. last week, the DVR was delivered (to my neighbor by mistake!) the next day around noon. Keep in mind that Verizon will charge you $39.99 to order this way.

Another option, if you have a Verizon store nearby, is to contact them to see if they have any 7232s, and if they do see if they will let you swap. I have read that doing it that way eliminates (or may eliminate) the $39.99 charge, but I don't know that for sure. Or of course you could just go into the store with your old DVR and see what happens.

I had my old 6416 for 5 1/2 years, worked great, but the new 7332 seems just fine, at least so far, certainly much more space. Plus whenever Verizon delivers the new 1.9 level of the IMG to my VHO I am ready to take full advantage. Smiley Happy

I agree about the new guide. The default color is difficult to see. Is there any way to change the color scheme to something more pleasing to the eye.

Agree completely with the guide color scheme. Not enough contrast between background color and text color. Especially on the search screen - almost unreadable with aging eyes. Should add a few 'themes' to choose from, or at least add the option for a larger font size (I'm suprised these aren't already available under the Accessability menu item).

I don't know, my wife and I noticed the update last night (VHO 15a) and we think it's pretty good. We like the new look and the new functionalities/improvements in the UI are enough to make up for any visual shortcomings. The DVR functions alone read like a wish list from all of us, so I actually think they did a good job here.

One question: how do you enable native pass-through? I can't find an option for that anywhere. Is it on by default?

Appreciate your posting regarding issues, but it might be helpful to quote the original post you are answering. I know it doesn't directly affect me (as I haven't posed any questions) but it sure makes it hard to figure out what the original question was and for someone else to possibly chime in with a suggestion or solution.

As a new FiOS TV subscriber, it will be interesting to me to see how Verizon supports their (probably) long time customers that have older equipment. This is leased equipment, not owned, so it seems to me since an IMG was released that the older boxes cannot take advantage of, the monthly lease fee should be lowered, and/or a discounted upgrade should be made available.

Hey Lina,
I am just assuming here since I do not have the 7xxx box and do not have the new guide. However, from what I read there is an option to change the guide from widescreen(HD) to SD so it will look better on your TV. Please check the option on your TV. Hope this helps.

There is also the option of selecting CLASSIC VIEW in the settings menu which will sort of return the look to 1.8. First thing (as amoon70 suggested) is to set the graphics to 4:3 (SD) not the default 16:9 (HD).

Viewed recordings are a different color from those that have not been viewed - if that is what you are asking. So in that case you will be able to tell what has been watched or not.

I have the same question. I am on VHO 06, Massachusetts, and so far no upgrade. How long is gonna take for Verizon to rollout 1.9 to all customers? A week, a month, 3 months? As far as I know nobody has a clue. By the way, I am former DirectTV customer and DirectTV upgraded software, I believe, at once for all customers . Verizon is very slow on any upgrade and this is no exception

The reason why Verizon staggers the upgrades is so that if something goes wrong or there is a major bug, it won't affect all of their customers at once. It's good business practice, even if it makes us impatient.

Major bug? Are you kidding me? As far as I know Verizon worked on 1.9 for almost 3 years, then it went through intensive Beta testing. If after all this there can be MAJOR BUG, then it"s unimaginable... I understand Verizon concerns, but still Verizon has to dramatically improve their customer service. So many people complain ( me included) how difficult is to get to Verizon representative and how to fix something. From my experience DirectTV was better with customers...

Nobody will test your software like an end user. No amount of system test, validation test, unit test, integration test, or even beta testing will rat out problems like going live in the field with thousands and thousands of users in the general population. I also came from DirecTV and, if I remember correctly, they rolled out 6.1 to a limited population, then when they didn't see a spike in support calls, or they were able to profile the calls they were getting and provide solutions for their CSRs, they rolled it out at a higher rate to the rest of us. I suspect Verizon will do the same thing.

I am in VHO15 (Buffalo) and i didn't get the upgrade. I hav the new Cisco boxes. The tech I talked to, had no idea when it will be sent out to me.

try a reset of the stb Buffalo was one of the first places to get it. Maybe it just needs a reboot to initiate the upgrade.

go to www.verizon.com/repair and do the quick fix for set top box and see if you can refresh and reboot the box.

Seems as if some have received the 1.9 upgrade. Does any one yet know whether or not there is a list of esata external drives that are compatiable with the new 7232 boxes, or will any esata equipped dirve work? I don't have the upgrade yet, but do have the 7232 STB and would like to be prepared.

Go read the Release Notes linked to in the very first post in this thread, the drives supported initially are mentioned there. Plus Joe indicates that additional drives will be listed when tested.

Quiet weekend on the roll-out front. Did Vz slow down over the weekend, or are they in wait-n-see mode to see how it's going so far, or are you all who got 1.9 last week being pushed back to 1.8 because of servere SW bugs?

Overall, I really like this update. It has been a nice step forward. As with anything, there are a few things that I wish had been included or different so just wanted to make them known.

Likes

1) Look of the guide. Very readable.

2) Being able to record and delete shows from any STB. Great addition.

3) Previously watched recording are now marked. Very nice for our daughters Mickey Mouse shows since I don't actually watch them, it is tough to remember which ones we've shown.

4) The new sorting options with the guide including remembering which guide you used last. Now I can always pull up my Favorites list first and you can sort just by what you are subscribed to. I was able to realize I was subscribed to the Big Ten network because of this.

Dislikes/Misses

1) I don't like in the new guide that you can't tell if a show has already started. It seems like in most guides, if it is already in progress, there will be an arrow or some indication on the left of the listing.

2) I wish you could adjust the start and end time of a recording from every STB.

3) I was really hoping that my biggest wish would be included with the new search but alas. I would really like to be able to record things to the DVR by keyword search, ie. you put in "Baseball Mets Live HD" and the DVR would record every Mets game in HD on any channel. I know Directv and Dish have it so it can be done.

Finally, we will be able to have a decent amount of storage. I just upgraded to a 7216 DVR, and ordered one of the WD terabyte drives called out in the release notes. So now I wait (not too patiently) here in VHO1.

I had been told by CS that this DVR would give me up to 300 hours storage, I think she thought I would get a 7232. I did put my name on a waitlist for the 7232, but maybe I don't really need that.

To me, one of the most significant changes in IMG 1.9 is the 1080P capability. So, is any 1080P source going to be introduced?

If you go into "Setting" Television - guide view --- you can choose between "classic or Standard" - you can try using Classic and see if that helps you - just a thought

Does Joe's response here mean that in 1.9 when you Flip Favorits it will not let you bybass channels you don't have?

The meet the expert is to short, but I realize it could be never ending. So for you 1.9 people please explain.

The first thing I want to do is lock down a favorites list to be my default subscribed to list. Can I do this? If not that will be a bumer.

Right now I have had to build my own subscribed to list. Not clear on what Joe means her. For thos that have had or did test 1.9, did you get the recent HBO free preview in your favorites subscribed list?

What you will need to do is to select the option (under settings for the guide) called LAST USED. You would then go to the guide itself, press MODES and select the favorites list you want to use. This will now make that the default guide (at least until your box reboots - then you will have to repeat just the modes portion). There is also a mode called SUBSCRIBED which will give you all the channels in your package plus the PPV channels.

So far the only drives that Verizon has listed are the WD MyBook DVR Expanders of 500GB and 1TB. They say that in order to work fully any drive will require a 100 Mb throughput rate as well as no sleep mode.

Supp[osedly any drive will work, but if there are problems, VZ support will not help if your drive isn't on "the list".

I called up to try to get my dvr's upgraded to the 7000 series (most 1.9 features need the 7000 series - and, I am also hoping, will be much faster on 7000 series as the lag on the 6400 series is very bad) and was told I needed to wait (I did sign up some time ago - was told I needed to wait another month or so despite the fact that since 1.9 I am having issues with playback of recorded programs that they can't figure out, so I was also hoping to upgrade to 7000 series to see if that would potentially fix that issue)

The one big thing I dislike about verizon over comcast, is with comcast I could go to the store 5 minutes away, and they were ALWAYS willing to upgrade my boxes to the latest boxes - no questions asked. A much simplier and better approach to verizon's. I consider myself a big verizon customer (phone, internet, cellular, and tv - and I have 6 boxes at that) (total monthly bill approaching $400) - but don't really feel appreciated. Comcast seemed always willing to do whatever they needed to keep my happy.

We only have verizon wireless stores here - unless that's what you meant. I didn't think they could exchange tv boxes. I guess I can give them a call and see if they do that.

I doubt that anyone, including anybody in Verizon, really knows for sure at this time. And for sure they won't tell us. If you know your VHO, you might find some information in one of the following threads:

When you read these you will see that the rollout will apparently be smallest to largest VHO, over an unspecified period of time, from weeks to months.

I suspect all you can do is sit back, relax, enjoy (or cuss) what you have now, and anticipate what is coming..... Smiley Very Happy

Joe A. advised in the on-line forum that the Tampa area (VHO2) is at the beginning of the rollout plan for 1.9. If we're next after the initial rollout and if the plan was to rollout to another market every two weeks or so, then that would have been this past week. But we didn't get it yet. No biggie. Just info for others who are waiting and are later in the rollout. I'll post once we receive it to give others an idea of how long it might be.

I just added FiOS TV service, and one of the reasons was the ability to add an external eSATA drive to increase recording capacity. I've just discovered that I need IMG 1.9 to get support for the external drive, but I can't find out anything about the timing of the roll-out of IMG 1.9 in the northern VA area. Can anyone point me to any kind of schedule or expectation for the roll-out in my area?

The release of 1.9 is currently on hold!! No time frame or location schecule has been released nor is likely to be released.

No one knows.. well, some people know, but they are not telling us. The scuttle is it starts back up by July 1. I *really* wish Vz would consider starting with the next VHO and leave 14,15, and 15a with what they have until the rest of us have had a shot at it.

If they just keep re-spinning 14, 15 and 15a then it could be a long, dry Summer.

Vow, IMG development is a real disaster for Verizon. They did not yet fully implement IMG 1.9, then stopped rollout and now 1.9a is coming?! Unbelivable!!! Verizon tested beta version 1.9 for three+ months and now they realized that 1.0 is a piece of junk that had to be redone?

Shame to you, 1.9 development team! You all should be fired!

When is it going to be released. I signed up expecting extended storage to be available quickly. Now my bill is he same as I had with DTV, where I had over 4 TB in one room (4 dvrs x 1TB drive each) now I have 1 expensive DVR and no expanded storage. I could record 8 shows in that 1 room (If I wanted to) and store a whole season of EPL soccer, now I have to delete, delete, delete. As you can tell I am not to happy with your pricing model for equipment. (and please don't "state of the art" me). This update needs to be rolled out extra fast, or DTV here I come.

You do realize that this is a PEER-TO-PEER (user to user) forum. I don't know who you think you are adressing the above statement to, but 99% of those here are not employees of Verizon -, myself included (although a few employees do lurk).

I think that Verizon charging $20 rental fee for DVR is way too expensive. I guess that price Verizon pays Motorola for each DVR maybe $100 a piece, so, after 5 month renting it to customer, Verizon makes pure profit on each box!!!

I am former DTV customer and I was pretty happy that they charged for DVR one time charge and then it was free. Unlike Verizon, DTV is willing to absorb charge buying boxes from manufacturer and that is very customer friendly policy.

The reason I swithched, is FIOS Internet and because Verizon triple package is cheaper.

I think Verizon should be flexible in charges for equipment as $20 rental fee for DVR is way too expensive. For people willing to have 2 or 3 DVR at home it's very expensive to pay rental fee.

Verizon shall allow customers to pay full price for equipment, if they wish, and not to tie customers to rental fee for equipment the life of service.

Yes I can say I am not Verizon, and yes about 99% of the people here are not Verizon employees. Could be 95%? By the way until a few years back, Verizon was only a phone, and data connection provider. Not a Media Content Provider. You said it yourself, Microsoft built the first interface. So who is to say that Verizon is doing it 100% on their own. It could be they are doing it in a manner where they have more control over quality, with help from others. Perhaps they were not happy with revision 1.0. Like I said I do not work for them, so I am just throwing out a wild guess. They may have even hired a whole boat load of developers. Before FiOS TV there was FiOS Internet, and that is when I subscribed. So some of the users that have been around a while, are rather fond of the service, hang out here, and try to help others when possible. I will say I ran a Tivo on FiOS for about 14 months, and patiently await the next reliable 1.9 release for the Verizon DVR. My TiVo is on a shelf unplugged right now. I like some features of both. But went back to Verizon for some of the features that their DVR has.It has only been a little over six months since 1.8, so I would rather have 1.9 release right, than released wrong.

By the way TiVO wants me to commit to another whole year just to have the box I own turned back on. So I think I will stay with the new QIP-7232 P2 and wait for 1.9.
