FTP Client and Actiontec Router

Hello,

I was reading the forum and it seems no one quite has the problem I seem to be having. I'm trying to connect to my webhost using FileZilla client 3.5. I have Verizon FiOS with the standard Actiontec router with no real custom settings. When I try to log in the action times out and I can't log in. I tried to log in from multiple computers from my network with the same problem. I've used my computer to connect to my webhost from a different network and it worked just fine. I tried to set up port forwarding on the router and still the same problem? Either way I thought you only have to set up port forwarding if you are using an FTP server?

Any ideas how to fix this?

"the action times out". What are you trying to log in to?

By "action" do you mean the Actiontec router?

You don't need to login to the Actiontec to establish a FTP session.

Is your webhost external? i.e. Not on your local network?

There are two FTP modes ACTIVE and PASSIVE. If you select ACTIVE in the client, the server will open a connection back to the client attemping to open the outgoing port # (random) +1. This makes it difficult to create a firewall rule.

If you use PASSIVE mode (PASV command), the client will open both the control and data connections, eliminating the need to open anything in the firewall in order for the client to work

I am trying to connect to my webhost. When I said the action times out I meant that FileZilla is set to retry the connection every 20 seconds and to give up after 2 unsuccessful connection attempts.

Yes my webhost is on an external network.

I have configured my client for both ACTIVE and PASSIVE modes and I am still unable to connect to my webhost using FileZilla

Are you able to reach your webhost by using for example, Traceroute/ping or by visiting your site using HTTP? I realize you might not have data uploaded yet, but you should at least receive a default page or some sort of directory listing; maybe even an access denied message if you attempt to visit it. If it times out, or if the trace route doesn't complete, that would be something to look into.

I just registered the domain and set up the hosting so there is nothing there yet. But yes, I can navigate to my page and the standard "this domain has just been registered" page pops up.

I'm also able to connect to the webhost using web based ftp clients. I would just use those and not bother with FileZilla but the transfer limit is so low and for some reason they will not let me upload more than twenty files in each folder.

No settings needed in router.

Must be something incorrect in your Filezilla client setup. Do you have a port setting in the setup? If no it will default to 21, is the server listening on 21? Typically you should set the transfer mode under the transfer settings to default. Are you using the correct user and password? When you start the connection to you see status: connecting to ip address or dns name? Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message. When you start the connection are you getting the welecome message?

FTP works fine in both active and passive modes behind the ActionTec as I use them all the time with not configuration necessary.

A couple of things:

1. Can you open a command line or terminal window and run the FTP command and attempt to connect to your web host? What are the results?

2. Do you have a PC firewall product installed (or even the windows firewall) on your systems? If so, can you temporarily disable the firewall and repeat the test above?

3. Is you hosting provider using FTP on the standard port or did they provide you with an alternate port (not port 21) to use. If so, the cause will be that ACTIVE won't work because the router won't know that the traffic is FTP. You should still however be able to accomplish test #1 above (using an alternate port number) -- just won't be able to transfer data.

4. Are you sure your hosting provider actually allows FTP? Many no longer do because FTP is insecure as it passes your login credentials in the clear. Instead they have moved to SFTP or FTPS (which are two entirely different protocols for which clients are available).
