Verizon Internet Security Suite Locks Up

I have tried using VISS for over a year and it locks up my desktop using WinXP 32 bit and I.E. I had to remove it and use a freebie Avast which allows the system to operate correctly. I also had to do the same with my laptop (VISTA 32)as the lock ups caused me to use a hard reset. I noticed that the systems operated correctly before Verizon changed the system with an upgrade, and after that, the system started locking up. I am still paying Verizon for the service, but am on the verge of canceling.

By the way, I tried installing VISS on Win7 beta, but it would not go.

One other thing, if you have any vestiges (orphan files) of any other virus checker on the machine, VISS will not install correctly. You have to remove all virus checkers and in some cases search through the registry for those reminants of files the installer does not remove.

I honestly think that my problem is because I have some orphan files that VISS interacts with causing my lockups. I have vigerously searched and reinstalled VISS, but it still causes lockups. I am tired of a program that acts that badly. I have tried e-mailing Verizon for an answer but all I get back is a reference to a FAQ that does not answer anything. I hope a moderator has some suggestions as I would like to keep the service without the lockups.

Uninstall Viss and then Run this rps file. Then reinstall and let me know how it works for you.

Thanks for the reply, but I have used Microsoft"s Imstaller Clean Up Utility (msicuu2) many times in the past and it has done nothing with my installation of VISS. I have it installed on the machine that I am using to post this message to you. To make it clear to the commmunity, I have removed it, (VISS) three separate times on this machine and reinstalled it. This is my wife's machine and she uses Internet explorer with Verizon's mail service which causes the lockup in cahoots with VISS. Remove VISS, no more lockups and a reasonable satisfied user. I have removed and reinstalled Internet Explorer quite a few times and it still locked up untill I removed VISS. If I use FireFox, then I have no problem with VISS. My laptop running VISTA does the same thing.

The irksome thing about VISS is there is no method that I can discover to report this abnormality to Verizon as there definitely is a small problem with the Virus checker and the use of I.E.

After the removal of Internet Security Suite a log file, FreedomInstallScript.log, is kept in C:Windows folder. This file provides a log of the history on events such as installations, removals and upgrades. This log can provide useful information in resolving any difficulties experienced with the Internet Security Suite.

If you are unable to remove Verizon Internet Security Suite through Windows Add/Remove Programs, run this uninstall tool.

Click here to download the RpsUU.exe file to your Desktop.
Double click the file to run it.
Click Yes to confirm that you want to uninstall.
Restart the computer when prompted.

Problem: Uninstallation via Add/Remove Programs and the Cleanup Utility are unsuccessful, users may run this Microsoft Tool that can detect and remove registry entries.

Solution: Use the Microsoft Cleanup utility to remove Verizon Internet Security Suite.

Click here to download the Microsoft Clean utility to your Desktop. Double-click the saved file to start the installation.
Click Next on the first page of the Windows Installer Cleanup Installation Wizard.
Accept the License Agreement and press Next.
Click Next to begin the install.
Click Finish once the installation is complete
Once the installation is complete, click Start, point to Programs and choose Windows Install Clean Up
A list of programs will appear. Remove any entries containing the following:

Answer: Follow the steps below:

1. Start Internet Explorer
2. Click Tools then Internet Options.
3. Click the Privacy tab.
4. Move the slider in the Settings section to Medium.
5. Now click the Advanced tab.
6. Scroll to the end of the list and select Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0.
7. Click Apply to save your changes.

Ensure Windows and Internet Explorer updates are installed
1. Start Internet Explorer
2. Click Tools then Windows Update.
3. Click Express Install (Recommended).

Ensure all updates are installed and Internet Explorer is version 5.01 with Service Pack 2 or higher. Internet Explorer can also be updated by visiting Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx

Internet Explorer can be removed and reinstalled by doing the following:

Uninstalling Internet Explorer:

From the list that appears, uncheck Internet Explorer then click Next.
Follow the wizard and click Finish once it is complete.

Reinstall Internet Explorer:

On my Xp machine after removing VISS as JoeD suggested , upon reinstallation, VISS refused to install due to what it saw as Mcafee installation . It bought up the Mcafee uninstall program, but it would not uninstall. (I had removed McAfee prior to the original installation of VISS a year and a half ago). I had reinstalled VISS on two other occasions and had to go through the registry search by search in order to remove orphan files of Mcafee in order to make VISS install. I had forgotten this method until VISS reminded me once again that I had to remove Mcafee in order to get a reinstall.

I looked up on the internet to see if others were having the same problem with Mcafee and discovered: www.pchell.com/virus/uninstallmcafee.shtml

which pointed me to MCPR.exe, a universal remover for Mcafee. After removing all of the possible Mcafee files by the registry (a laborious process), I ran MCPR.exe and it must of found all of the orphan files I missed that was locking up my XP machine, as the VISS reinstall has been running over a week without lockups.

Not so, my Vista laptop, as I have run MCPR.exe three times and have reinstalled VISS, but it still locks up from time to time and I have to do a hard reset going through SafeMode using RegCure to remove a lot of broken registry links, and then VISS behaves for about two boots and then locks up, usually when I am using Internet Explorer or when I want to shut down the machine. Still searching for a cure. (note: I do not have the problem when I remove VISS and use one of the freebies for virus protection).

JoeD: I tried going to Radial Point, but the site you posted requires you to have an account with them, and there is no way to establish an account, at least not for us plebeians. I suppose that Verizon has an account and thereby you have an account number.

I still want to know if Radial Point and by proxy Verizon is going to make VISS compatible with Windows7, as the VISS will not work with the Trial Version in release now. October 22 is just a few weeks away.
