Very slow internet on 35/35 plan

Speed test to Los Angeles (I'm 100 miles away):

It's coming up as 4/28. The closer test sites come up even slower. My plan is 35/35 and the internet has been really sucking for about a month. The speed test is wired, not wireless. It also seems to jump around alot. I've had some 2/2's, 10/30's, etc. Bottom line is it is NOT 35/35.

I have the actiontec MI424WR router.

I'm open to any ideas.

I'm having the same problem. The same thing happened a few weeks ago and then it gradually fixed itself after a number of hours. I thought it was a fluke but it is happening again now. I only noticed because my StarCraft II game was lagging hard.

Is this going to happen all the time or what? I thought FiOS was the best.

The internet is massive interconnected cloud of computer networks many of which are not owned or managed by Verizon. The bottlenecks can be just about anywhere and those which occur outside of Verizon's cloud are beyond their ability to address. Additionally, the destination itself also has a fixed amount of bandwidth for which they have subscribed and likewise during busy periods can themselves be the bottleneck. For example, it amazes me that people are surprised that during a snow storm when everyone is working at home or homebound that the internet is "slow". Networks like the internet are design for typical load, not potential peak -- of course it's slow -- everyone's using it.

This is why first, you should always do your speedtest against a Verizon speed testing site not some random site down the road. Verizon's site can be found at: http;//speedtest.verizon.net

If you're wired and run this test and are having bandwidth issues, it will suggest running the tuneup to see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't then the problem could be Verizon or it could be your PC itself. I don't like recommending running without anti-virus, firewalls, etc. for people who don't understand the risks, but these often get in the way and you need to run a test unencumbered in order to determine where the problem lies.

A speed test run against one or more other sites can be useful in benchmarking performance around the internet. But, your speed will frequently be below what you contract for with Verizon. Those providers either cap their rates or intervening bandwidth limitations determine how those sites respond. Test against several and see how the performance varies. YMMV. In reality, these test are more a measure of internet as a whole, not your specific connection.

In reality, my connection routinely tests out within the Verizon cloud at or above the rate 35/35 speeds and for locations which have solid tier-1 connectivity for which I know the bandwidth they have available, I get full bandwidth to them most of the time.

Verizon's speed test did yeild a much better result: 43/36. And now doing the speedtest.net test again I get: 50/29. And while thats all well and good for now, it will change. My question is more why is this happening? Everything used to haul **bleep** until about a month ago. Netflix wont stream in HD (called them, no problems on their end), xbox lags, websites load slow and forget youtube. I guess I'm to assume here that the interweb cloud got mucked up in the last month and now my speed sucks?

I too have the 35/35 plan and I am getting very very slow internet speeds according to SpeedTest. I am getting 26/8 and 13/15 and I also have the actiontec MI424WR router. Can someone please tell what is going on? I know that my router is very old and will getting a new updated router will it fix my problem. I am in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Im on the 25/25 plan and my speeds right now are 1/18.

Support is very slow to respond.

Hi guys. I'm seeing a similar issue here in Texas. It looks like there's some severe packetloss going on within the verizon network. Here's what I'm seeing:

I've noticed that my performance has decreased to about 1/3rd of the 35/35 plan. Normally I get at least that, if not more, but I'm seeing results like this: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1138634935.png when I normally see results like: http://www.speedtest.net/result/787313435.png

When testing my routing I noticed that I'm getting packet loss between two hops:

Ouch, 39% loss. Now, some routers drop ping packets regularly, so I'll have to hit it up later when I'm not having this issue; however, I was wondering if there's some maintenance going on on the FIOS network to explain this?

I am in Sterling.. Same problem.. I had 15/5 and "upgraded" to 35/35. It crawls at times.. never had that problem with 15/5. XBOX hangs, Youtube PLAY catches up with download so I have to wait. This sucks. I am calling tech support tomorrow. Speedtest.Net shows 42/17, SpeakEasy shows like 6/3, real life downloads vary.

Hey Ed I am in Herndon and I too have the 35/35 plan and my speed sucks (14/17 or 29/6 at times) I am calling Verizon to see if I can get a new router I have the old router from 4 years ago...

I'm in Tyson's Corner, my speeds suck also (below 18 mbps on a 25/25 plan). I've changed channels, used high gain antenna,

extension cable on router, had the router replaced by Verizon, etc., speeds still slow. What's the answer?

I know they just want to check EVERYTHING.. what operating system am I on (XP). How many devices do I have hooked up (alot).. etc.. the thing is.. on my plan 15/2 last week I was blazing fast! Now that my "upgrade" to 35/35 has completed it 'feels" like dial-up. They rebooted my fiber unit, had me reset my router, reboot all pc's and are now sending me a new router (even though mine was fast last week and has the latest firmware.. i think it is something on THERE end.. not mine.. time will tell.
