Upload Speed using FTP

I have a 25/ 15 fios connection and when uploading using FTP is about 400 KB/s . According to my research that equals 3.2 mbps . I realize that I may not get the full 15 mbps up but 3.2 is way below my expectations.

Does anyone know if throttling is done (restricting speed) on upload via ftp?

btw this is a business service, I just did not see a business fios forum and I figured the policies were the same.

Have you had any trouble with your upload speed when not using FTP? If you run speed tests, do they show that you are getting your full upload speed?

Might help to isolate if it's just FTP or your whole connection.

thanks. When doing a normal speedtest I am getting the full speed (15+), so that is what is so odd. I know that comcast throttles just on peer to peer traffic so it is possible to isolate and throttle one type of transfer. I'm hoping that FTP is not identified as a "problem". Although Verizon has been one of the best in terms of letting users do what they want with the bandwidth...

For many service service providers FTP is simply not a priority, and the number of FTP users tends to very small compared to the number of HTTP users. So most don't allocate a lot of resources to FTP services. The lack of allocated resources is reflected in very limited FTP bandwidth available.

If you are someone like Apple's Itunes store, and your product really is FTP services, then you allocate a lot of resources to FTP. That's the exception to the rule.

My own experience is that FTP speeds except to a handful of places (like Apple's Itunes store, Adobe, and Microsoft) never get anywhere near the maximum speed of my FiOS connection.

All you are getting from Verizon is the On/OFF Ramp to the Internet. There are plenty of places and things beyond the Fiber Optic path from the Central office to your office that can degrade the performance to far less than the capacity of the FiOS connection.

can your FTP site actually handle downloading at 15 megabits, some ftp servers are not neccessarily busy, but also not neccessarily sitting there waiting for you to send an upload to them. if they have more than one user sending anything at the same time, then you will hit that kind of bottlenecking. verizon doesn't throttle bandwidth to answer your question.

does your download upload speedtests match your 3.2mb upload? or is that exclusive to just this ftp server and only this ftp server?

My home FiOS connection consistently produces 20Mbps upload speeds when testing with nearby servers at my visual speed test. Uploads to my own commercial website are actually slower than what you are reporting. This leads me to believe that the bottleneck is actually the FTP server itself as others have suggested. If Verizon were throttling the connection then our tests should produce similar results.
