Fiber Optic line is fake?

I heard that the fiber optic cable does go to your house, but that a device is installed that then converts the fiber optic signal back down to cable before it becomes your internet, limiting your speed so your data is limited?

Anyone know about something like this?

Fiber optic goes to the Optical Network Termination or ONT, where it is converted to either cat 5 ethernet, or if you have FiOS Television, MOCA, and travels over a coaxial cable. Typical speeds available on MOCA/Coaxial cable is 200+mbps (mine runs 240mbps up, and 241mbps down). Since the fastest speed currently offered by Verizon is 150mbps, this may be an issue for a Cat5 connection, but not for a MOCA connection.

The exception to this situation is Multiple Dwelling Unit (Apartment) installation, where the ONT needs to be placed in a central location, and the service from the ONT to the customer is VDSL, which is limited to about 28mbps.

As matheww says, the ONT converts the fiber running to your house into various formats which can leverage your existing home wiring -- namely Coax, ethernet, and phone lines (for voice). Both the coax and ethernet technologies exceed the present rates which residential internet service is delivered to your home (typically 15/5, 25/25, or 35/35 depending on which plan you subscribe to). As Verizon moves to 150/50 service offerings, the ONT will need to be replaced -- but at the same time the home network will likewise need to move to a different ethernet (1GB) or Moca 2.0 which can support higher data rates to remain above the delivery rate.

At the moment however, any plan you subscribe to from Verizon will be delivered to your home over fiber and distributed throughout your home with more than ample bandwidth to otherwise not constrain the data plan to which you subscribe.
