What would you like to see from your FiOS TV?

This thread I'm doing out of pure personal interest...besides fixing the bugs with equipment, opening ports for ethernet and bigger hard drives, and even CallerID on your TV...What new features would you add to your TV service next year or so if you were head of the FiOS TV dept?

For example, you can search for receipes on the HD STB or you can Twitter on your DVR.

What would you really like to see? Please don't say "FIX THE BROKEN STUFF FIRST" or anything like that since this isn't constructive...This is purely a creative thread for some of you dreamers.

I personally wouldn't mind social networking intergrated on my STB, naturally with the ability to turn it off if it gets too annoying. Why not at a WebTV since you already are paying for FiOS internet? RSS feeds and email notifications? I'm pretty sure everyone would love to sync their recordings with their PC and manage their media...but why not share it with friends and family? (I know the LEGAL problems with that but hey why not?)

Those are some of my ideas.

Those are some of my ideas.

I would like to see Verizon focus on the functionality of the DVR. There are still a number of popular DVR functions that are not yet supported by the FiOS DVRs:

the ability to autorecord based on search input (ex: record all new programs matching "MLB" in the title and "Washington Nationals" in the description);
more options to extend / pad series recordings without creating a manual recording; and
overlap protection (i.e. ability to autoclip lowest priority programs) to prevent missed programs when 3+ programs overlap by 5 minutes or less.

As for non-DVR features, the main one I'd be focused on would be DLNA client compatibility. Media Manager isn't the right direction to pursue for the QIP7216 and future devices, as it is proprietary. DLNA support would allow the device to access music, videos, and photos on all sorts of other devices in the home without the need for any extra software.

Ultimately, it would be great to see DLNA server compatibility, so the Verizon DVR could stream its recordings to other boxes that support the required encryption. [Yes, the standards already exist to securely view content on a device that mitigates copyright concerns.]

Totally agree with KenAF. DLNA/UPnP support would be awesome. Put an end to Media Manager as there is no need to reinvent the wheel.

I would personally like to see the ability to get information via the web displayed on my screen. Things like the local weather report. I dont like the widgets, as they dont display enough information. Maybe the middle ground is keep the widgets, but be able to hit a key and expand the widget into the full screen and then do a more comprehensive search.

DLNA would be great, as I have a Buffalo Technologies TerraStation and have tons of movies I would love to watch on my nice new LCD HDTV. I would also like to take recordings off the DVR and play them on my PC.

Going even further on the Internet thing, dump Media Manager (and its currently-in-Beta streaming video with its proprietary function and YouTube-only streaming) and turn the HM DVR into a TRUE Internet Media Appliance. All that has been said previously, as well the ability to surf the web from the comfort of your living-room couch! Then not only YouTube, but also Hulu, Netwrok websites and others will be available to view in glorious HD on your HT TV.

I'd have to agree. It would be great to sync all of your media back and forth between devices and such. How about streaming radio (mp3/ogg/wma)?

Media Manager was created in part to address the limitations of the QIP6416 hardware. The QIP6416 is very limited in the audio and video formats that it supports. It cannot support Youtube, Hulu, and other Internet A/V formats without a computer running specialized software to convert those to compatible formats.

I understand Verizon's desire to add that functionality to older boxes which they cannot really afford to replace in the near future. But there's no getting around the fact that the QIP6416 hardware was never designed or intended to support what Verizon wants to do.

Rather than spending a lot of time and resources to make the QIP6416 do something that it was never meant to do (by way of PC transcoding, which few customers are likely to use), it should focus embedding that functionality in the QIP7216 and its next-generation DVR platform, both of which directly support more of the formats used on the Internet. That -- embedding new functionality like DLNA in new hardware -- is what others like Comcast and TWC are doing, and if Verizon does not do the same, their hardware and software will not be competitive a year or two down the road.

How about one that will just read my mind and record the shows I want it to record regardless of it I forget to program it, and one that I can put my remote into it and will automatically program it for all my devices rather than searching for the code!!! (I know there are some that can be programmed by hooking up usb to pc, but I just want to put it in the dvr and it auto sense's all devices in area and programs lol)

2 things that I would like to see:

1.) Have the numbers light up on the FIOS remote. Often times, I watch tv at night, and it's tought to make out the numbers

2.) make sure that I can view my ESPN fantasy football team through the widgets this fall

1. In the program guide, make the highlighted channel and program the top line in the list instead of the middle. By nature I want to only read what's below the highlighted show and I miss things when using the page up/down button to navigate in a hurry.

2. When setting a program to record, have the option THEN to extend the start/end times for the recording instead of having to go back later in the "view schedule" menu to do it.

3. Have the option to extend the time, or much more desirable, turn off the annoying auto-unpausing that the box does. It's not only annoying to have it unpause a recorded show and exit, but can down right ruin live TV. I've only had fios for a few weeks and have already had a hockey game and a few movie endings ruined because the box unpaused and went to live while I was talking on the phone or something. The comcast boxes don't do this so I know it can be changed.

4. When exiting a recorded program before the end of the recording, have the "last" button take you back to the point you stopped watching the recording. Right now it only takes you to the last channel watched. The comcast boxes do this and it was a nice feature.

5. In the recorded shows menu, show how much room (by percentage or drive space) each recording takes up.

More functionality on the remote TV when using the multi-room DVR. I would like the ability to delete a show off the DVR from a remote TV. Would like the ability to record a show from the remote TV onto the main DVR. Would like to watch a recorded show on my PC from the DVR. Finally I would like the program guide to always display the year of the show in info. This does not seem to be consistent, some times it displays the year, othertimes it doesn't.

Forward looking thinking is great and I applaud Verizon for it. I came from Comcast and they didn't seem to care about what I (their customer) wanted.

Keeping this in mind...

I would like Verizon to take a look at TiVo, Dish and the new Moxi DVR. There are so many little but useful features that if Verizon were to look at these DVR's for themselves, they might say hey lets try to incorporate some of these into our IMG.

I feel Verizon needs to fix first and add later. My example is the guide DATA. It is terrible. My God I hope this does not come as a surprise to Verizon. It simply amazes me that Verizon is happy with FYI. Tribune (chapter 11 or not and Gemstar) provide superior guide data. Verizon needs to address the underlying issues first if they want to have a world class IMG and DVR.

I'm all for progress as many of you suggest but please fix what ails the IMG and DVR first.

I agree completely with nascar, with the exception that I have no personal experience with Tivo or Moxi so I really can't say what they have that I want. I have seen a Dish DVR, my son has one, I wasn't terribly impressed, but it might be an older model. But so many people feel so strongly about how great a Tivo works that Verizon really does need to see what it can learn from that.

Some of the preceeding posters have listed stuff that I really just don't care about - games, web access, etc. I really just want a great TV experience - great HD picture, good SD picture, lots of HD channels, more recording capacity, accurate Guide DATA, no DVR bugs, web interface to DVR with and without multi-room feature, option for on-screen caller-id. Give me this stuff and I will give Verizon an A+.

My wishlist, in order of preference:

A true 16:9 HD Interactive Media Guide
A much bigger hard drive (1 TB) or support for external drives
Picture in picture (requiring only one line out)
On screen caller ID

I like and agree with most of the comments in the thread. I was hoping for more creative suggestions...maybe a Wii kinda remote and Gui? Hmmmmm....

I think the problem is we all want the stuff that is available now to work correctly, or work better than it now does. Once that happens, then we can perhaps think about new and maybe exotic things.

Just as an example, while I am overall a very happy FiOS customer, I will never, ever be totally satisfied with the TV service until Verizon steps up and fixes the Guide DATA problem (not the Guide itself, how it works, etc, but the data content that is so often wrong or incomplete). This is something that can be fixed, and pretty quickly, if Verizon would just do it, there are Guide data providers out there right now that do much, much better than FYI.

My opinion as always.....

Hi everyone, my first post here, nice to meet you all...

My biggest complaints are the facts that the hard drive on my STB (Motorola QIP 6416) is so unbelievably small and that an external hard drive CANNOT be connected! I just upgraded to the "Extreme" package so that I can receive more HD channels, but the fact that I can only record 20 hours of HD shows is pitiful, yet I'm paying for the use of an HD-DVR!

I just recently found out that TiVo can be used on FIOS, so I'm seriously considering going that route, purely because of the HD space issue. What's the point of having (and paying for the use of) an HD DVR but only being able to use if for 20 hours of programming! Doesn't Verizon see this as a problem?

So those would be the things I'd like to see improved the most.

I just got married and since my wife has Fios I am now a new Verizon Fios customer. Before I got married I had DirecTV and found the 100 hour HD-DVR to small for me (so I had 2). When I started researching Verizon I was shocked that all they offered was 20 HD hours on their DVR. (and they expect one dvr with 20 hours to service a family with multiple televisions?) I have always been curious about Fios and have heard great things about it, but this is the first time I've been in an area where it was available. Now I'm not sure I want to keep it. 😞

I came from DirecTv and had a TiVo, but DH wanted high def, so to FIOS we came. I've been researching a little bit and it looks like you can buy a TiVo brand DVR with lots more hard drive space and use it with FIOS. I don't think you can access FIOS video on demand, but honestly the last time I watched a network broadcast show on VOD all the functions were disabled and I was forced to watch the commercials, so I don't think I'll miss VOD.

Somewhere I read a price comparison of what TiVo would cost for a year and it was comparable with the FIOS HD-DVR cost. I'm just beginning to check out the costs, but I LOVED TiVo, so I'm thinking that's probably the way I'll go.

I seriously don't want Verizon to do one single thing to FIOS TV until they figure out a way for their customers to record more than 20 hours of HD programming. Paying for HD but having to record in SD because of Verizon's ineptitude is unacceptable to me.

Hope you figure out something else for yourself soon.

you can set your box to notify you if a movie will be coming on in the next day or two that matches your favorite actor/actress/director/movie list.

That would be a cool feature. Set up automatic recordings based on "tags". That would certainly enhance series recordings.

How about adding TiVo like features such as "WishList" and "Keyword" and "Asterisk" * Search. Those that have TiVo know exactly what I am referring to. Basically it is the ability to drill down to get the exact match you want when recording a show.

Of course the guide data has to be accurate. But I suppose that isn't wishful thinking, just expected.

How about when a program is in HD, telling me what channel it is. Also I would like to know if it is a repeat. Like originally aired on date. That's something easy.

Please streamline the 'Guide' giving it the ability to delete or lock out channels I don't subscribe to, channels in foreign language, duplicate channels ( in standard def) or channels I have no interest in. I know that I can create Favorites 1 & 2 but scrolling still goes through all the channels.

The original Guide, way back in 2005/2006, worked that way. Verizon chose to remove that function, and I doubt they will bring it back because there is an alternative available (just my opinion, no knowledge of their plans).

It is easy to set up the Guide so that scrolling does NOT go through all of the channels, either the actual viwing or through the Guide. If you will take a look at the post near the top of the list here in the FiOS TV section called "Exploiting FiOS TV Favorites" you can set up the Favorites and then NEVER, unless you want to, see any of those channels again (it allows you to set it up so that when you hit the Guide button by default you see one of your Favorites lists, not the full Guide).

Give it a try, can't hurt, and might make you happier.

ON-Line, Shared Storage of DVR content. Why should we all waste electricty on external Hard drives, with this fat pipe we have for our internet connections, we could stream/buffer recordings stored on external servers. The 1st time someone chooses to record a show/movie/game, it will go up on an external server that anyone who subscribes will have access to. Vz could save money/bandwidth and get rid of On-demad.

I believe Cablevision either offers this or is going to. I really don't like Cablevision but they do come to the game early between this feature and now 101 meg d/l speeds. They already have CID on the TV which I know many people are asking for.

That commerical where the phone guys invent stuff the Cable company already has is really true.

I think my Dish DVR was the gold standard when it comes to ease of use. I don't say this because of years of using it but whenever I was trying to do something I would guess and sure enough my guess would be right. This is the very definition of intuitive.

With the Verizon DVR sometimes you use an arrow to move forward or backward and sometimes I have to use OK and Exit. Try explaining this to older people.

I agree with the earlier comment of recording by "keywords."

I would love the dual tuner to actually work as Motorola intended. I could watch two sporting events at the same time with my Dish DVR. Hit the "Swap" button to switch between them. This seems to be disabled by Verizon because it is certainly described in the Motorola Manual. This is the highest priority item to me. Also, having PIP (picture in picture) for this would be nice too while allowing me to switch. Absolutely fantastic feature. This should be easy to implement as it is already available from Motorola. Please Please implement this Verizon.

When I hit the record button I want to only record from the time I hit record and not the last 30 mins. I watch CNBC and a program may be 2-4 hrs long but I only want to record a 5 min segment. Also, if you had a bigger buffer (2 hrs like Dish instead of your 30 mins) then you could give me the option when I hit record whether or not I want to record from the beginning or just from that point forward. Don't need to fill up my DVR with "stuff" I don't care about.

As noted above, let's increase the size of that buffer - if Dish can go back 2 hrs then so can you.

I also agree with the comment about the weather widgets being insufficient. A way to get more detail would be nice.

There are too many channels and I can't explain to my parents and everyone in the household which channels I have and which I don't but I could easily say I don't have anything in RED. Yes, I can manage this via Favorites but then I have to explain how to use this. This would be a low priority for me.

RF support in the remote would be nice so I can hide my DVR and still operate it. (Again - see DISH).

Recording on home media DVR from connected STBs would be nice.

Now to answer the main question:

Convergence is the buzzword. So if I am watching a race on Speed TV I would want to see the live timing information that is available on the website. It would be nice if I could tie a website to a particular program on a channel. This way instead of having a laptop next to me I could bring up a specific page on a website to see live timing and scoring either on an overlay or by swapping back and forth. It is important to tie this to a specific program and not a channel. Similarly, I could be watching "American Idol" and see what is happening on the American Idol website. Maybe even vote from the TV.

Hit "Last" on the remote to swap between tuners. One caveat is you have to pause the tuner or it will swap back to Live.

1) Re: recording from time I hit record: to each his own I guess. I prefer it to go back as far as whatever it has in its buffer. Since you don't want that, you could just change the channel two times and then go back, now there would be nothing in the buffer. A little extra work, but not much more than selecting an option on how much to record.

2) Re: the Guide; then set the Favorites up correctly one time and use the Guide button. Once set up there is absolutely nothing to explain to anybody - they hit the Guide button and they get only the Favorites by default. And if they are channel surfing, they see only the channels that are in the Favorites. Really, really simple to set up and use. There is a thread near the top of the FiOS TV area that describes in detail how to set this up.

After years of seemingly endless capacity on my Direct TV HD DVR I've switch to Fios to save money overall but the capacity of the DVR is lacking I'll gladly buy a external HD just give me that option if i had known how low the capacity was I would not have switched my TV service what is the HD capacity anyway? I should have done my homework.

A good quality local RADAR summary (along the lines of what I had previously with Time Warner cable, via channel 96). I thought we already have this. Channel 49 in my area is the localized The Weather Channel Weatherscan. Can't imagine you would really need anything else.

Several things I would love to see:

The ability to watch fios tv on my iMac
or watch the movies from my iMac on my television. Everything is connected wirelessly, why can't they interact?
I switched from Directv and really miss my caller id on my tv screen.
A larger hard drive or the ability to connect an external hard drive.
More reliable VOD...everything we have watched pauses and skips.
If I have been watching a show from the beginning and need to leave, I would like to be able to hit the record button and record it from the beginning of the show
The ability to record more than 2 things at a time...AT&T lets you record 4

I could go on and on because there is so much more that could be done, but these are my highest priority items.

4 tuners would be very sweet! And either a larger capacity DVR or enable the external USB would be a nice start.

The ability to record more than 2 things at a time...AT&T lets you record 4
I could go on and on because there is so much more that could be done, but these are my highest priority items.

1. A new DVR or STB with support for all standard video formats, and a web browser. Why should we be limited with only streaming video that Verizon wants us to see.

2. Use of a mouse that can be connected via one of the USB ports, and can turned on and off. More of a Window based interface. Perhaps X-Windows like Linux based platform.

3. Why not a linux based DVR platform like TIVO used? If not working with MS, then why not something else completely?

4. If working with MS, then why not a PC based interface with a CPU that will do everything now and in the near furture.

5. SMB file access to connect with MS network shares for file access. One could add a user account and password to the box for file access. The interface could have a file interface like midnight commander.

6. Access to hardware features on the DVR that are there, and customers must pay extra for. Why do we need to pay extra for features that do not even go over Verizons network? The free remote DVR is heading in the right direction even if it is over the Web. Why not just a web based remote feature that can run on the local network and use the guide info that is in the STB.

7. A NEW Guide and or provider that has more and accurate information.

8. Phone service that can be accessed via the STB. Like the Call assistant over the STB.

I am sure I could come up with others.
