usb port on fios router

i just had fios installed, and boought an external hard drive to connect to the router's usb port. i specifially asked the install tech if i could attach to the router via the USB port, and was assured that i could. However, the HD is not being found on the network. A search of the forums tells me that Verizon has not made it active, and has no plans to do so? Is this true?

I have not heard of any plans for network attached storage, The router is busy enough routing.
