DNS addresses to use on FiOS?

Just had FiOS installed. After the install my speeds were 25 down/5 up. I ordered 20d-20u, so they had me run the optimizer and my speeds went to 25d-20u, which I liked. However, I need to change the DHCP scope as I usually run into issues connecting to other networks via VPN for my company on 192.168.1.XXX, so I changed back to the original IP scheme I had before the install (so I could see my printers, NAS and home server).

Speed dropped to 15d-5u now. Ran the optimizer again, but no change. The only issue I ran into during the changing of the DHCP range was that I didn't know what to enter for DNS, so I went with 4.2.2.1 and 4.4.8.8

Do I need to change the DNS to someplace else? What should I be point to?

We do apologize about the issue that you are experiencing but we use automatic DNS for FIOS. We are unable to support setting up static DNS service. We can assist you with your speed issue and that may also require you to factory reset the router . Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Make sure you aren't trying to test through your company's VPN connection. Often times when a VPN connection is active it will send all your web traffic through the corporate network which may or may not have the capacity to even handle a FiOS connection. Otherwise, 4.2.2.1 and 4.4.8.8 are good DNS servers to use. In my opinion, much better than the default ones Verizon offers up simply because they return the proper NXDOMAIN response, which you want with VPN use.

Once you've verified that, I would ensure that you are not using a Wireless connection, and finally, are using a reliable testing site such as myspeed.visualware.com

You should be able to leave the DNS settings blank or set to "use ISP" in which case the addresses which Verizon supplies to the router's WAN interface will be automatically leveraged by the router. Your clients then will use the router itself (!92.168.1.1, but in your case whatever address you set for the router) as their DNS server address (there's a small caching/forwarding DNS server which runs inside the ActionTec which will process the requests).

If you'd like to try different public DNS servers, try 208.67.220.220/222.222 (opendns) or 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 (Google's).
