STB died. Any way to save the recorded shows on ATTACHED DVR storage

I have the extra attached DVR storage with lots of shows. My STB died.. Fios customer support wants to send me a new STB.... but when you attach a different STB to storage unit, it erases all the shows on extra DVR storage (for copyright protection i think).

Is there any way to have the DVR storage unit think the new box is the same as old STB? maybe swapping cable cards or something? Any other ideas?

Not possible. Due to MPAA paranoia Verizon is currently required to lock that external drive to the initial recording device. Would be nice if it was account locked, not hardware - been suggested on the Idea Exchange (don't know if it will evere happen).
