I'm trying to watch a bluray player that is connected to the FIOS set top box with a HDMI cable. I can't get the remote to give me an option to switch to the Bluray player.

That's probably because the STB doesn't have an HDMI input. None of mine do and I don't believe any of the other models do either. So step 1 is to verify that the jack you plugged into is actually an HDMI input. If so provide the model number and maybe someone here can help.
As Walt has already indicated, the Verizon STBs do not have an HDMI input. The only input to any VZ STB is coax, and that cable is connected between the STB and the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), usually through a Verizon-supplied splitter. If you have connected a Blu-Ray player to anything in your home, it is probably some sort of display device (e.g., a TV).
You have not indicated the model numbers for any of your equipment, particularly the STB, but also the Blu-Ray player. Most of the STBs in use today have several different output types, including component, composite, HDMI, and coax. A cable runs from one of these outputs to your display device. Assuming there is no AV receiver in the mix, a separate cable connects the Blu-Ray player to the display device, not the STB
You have also not indicated which Verizon remote you are using. Typically VZ supplies a standard two-device remote that controls both the STB and the display device. The unit controls the STB "out-of-the-box" but must be programmed with a 3-digit code to control the display device. All of this is covered in the printed directions supplied with the remote.
VZ also has available a 4-device unit that can control an STB and 3 other devices connected to the display device, such as a DVD player, a VHS player, or a Blu-Ray player. This remote must be programmed for each device in use, other than the STB.
The volunteers who try to assist other users on these forums often have wide experience with devices and networks. You can make their job easier (and along the way get better results) if you supply careful and accurate descriptions of your issues, along with all pertinent data such as wiring diagrams, model numbers, steps already taken to solve particular problems, etc.
MKS, Hi. The only HDMI connections on all of my 3 Vz STB's, one a DVR, are outputs. Anywho, just make your life simpler: Get a good quality HDMI cable ( don't over spend on Monster, the $5.00 6' v1.4 3D/4K+ ready ones on eBay work just fine). Connect the BRDVD to, let's say, HDMI Input 2 on your flat panel TV's jacks, using HDMI Input 1 for your Vz STB. You will get many more functions from your BRDVD player using its own remote, (depending upon the model of course). My Sony ES BRDVD has so many "bells and whistles" that using the Vz STB remote would be wasting a lot of the my player's capabilities. Also, if you don't already, make sure ALL of your Vz, home theater, and PC power cords are plugged into high quality surge suppressors. My personal favorite is TrippLite, and once again, don't overpay for Monster's stuff, it way too expensive. Hope this helps. MacReady
