Transferring DVR recordings

I have several cooking shows that I want to keep. I know I can transfer recordings from my DVR to my computer. Can someone tell me - in layman's terms - how to do this please? I think I need transfer software? My ultimate goal is to transfer the shows to a thumb drive or an SD card.

Actually you can't. However all is not lost as indicated in the earlier post by PJL. However when I tried his link there was a problem (perhaps due to the "period" at the end of the copied link). Try this version:
