Terrible FiOS DVR Problem

Over the past two months I have been having some issues with my DVR. The first instance, my DVR randomly rebooted as if it was getting an update and then continued to do that for a long time. It lost its recordings and lost the ability to record. I left it unplugged overnight and once I plugged it back in, everything worked fine for weeks. Then later on it did the random reboot again and leaving it unplugged brought it back to normal. Yesterday, it rebooted twice within a few hours. So far, I have lost all my series recordings and programmed series. Is there a way to restore the DVR to factory default? I don't know what to do at this point. Nothing I am trying seems to fix the problem. The DVR has lost a lot of functionality at the moment: I cannot pause, rewind, fast forward live TV anymore. No series records(it attempts to and fails then tries again and fails once more, leaving me with two recordings that are a few seconds each). As a result, the dual tuner does not really work. Do I need this replaced or can something be done?

Several points. You only have to leave the DVR uplugged for about 30 seconds to achieve a 'soft reset'. Leaving it unplugged longer is no benefit.

Where is your DVR located? Does it have adequate ventilation. DVR's will reboot if they overheat. So make sure there is space around the DVR for air to circulate, and don't place other equipment on top of the DVR.

They also crash now and then for no obvious reason. However that shouldn't happen very often (mine probably 'crashes' about once every three months).

So if you don't have an overheating problem, your DVR is probably defective and should be replaced. I don't think Verizon will give you any trouble about that. If there is a Verizon Experience store within reasonable driving distance, you can trade DVR's over the counter, you might even end up with a 7232, which runs a little cooler than the 6416 and 7216 DVR's (it is also easier on your electric bill).

As for returning the DVR to factory settings. That is a hard reset, and usually Verizon does that remotely. That will wipe all of the user settings off the unit. I doubt that will solve your problem however (my opinion)
