Sudden slowdown in connection speed

I'm on a 35/20 plan. In the past, when I checked using speedtest.net, I was getting very close to those numbers. Since I haven't had problems I don't check often.

Last night while doing a normal Apple software update I saw very slow download speeds. When I did speedtest I was only getting about 3.5Mbps. This morning I am getting about the same. It's happening on two different computers (one wired, one wireless) as well as my iPad.

I'm in Rockland County, NY.

Is anyone seeing similar issues?

I too am getting fustrated with slower speeds as of 9/13 ish or so. I was either getting a lot of packet loss or jitter in my connection. Same as you, happening on all computers in the home.

I am also in Rockland NY.

This reminds me a lot of the days when I first had DSL over 10 years ago. The connection to the central office was great, but beyond that the Verizon Network had congestion issues. Maybe Verizon us rolling out their upgrades too quickly and their backbone networks can't handle the volumes, who knows. What I can says is that I see their network dropping a lot of packets, causing streaming video to no longer work. I too used to get the throughput they promised, but right now their network is at least as bad as the Cablevision network which I left because of their issues. Here's my trace showing which of their nodes is dropping. Remember that ALTER.NET is part of Verizon's network infrastructure. Their nodes appear to be dropping the packets.

I'd be happy to work with their engineers if they cared about these issues, but my experience is that they don't escalate the issues to the correct people or they don't allow their network engineers to address the issues. The problem is bad right now, and doesn't seem to be getting any better.

Past couple days speed has come to a tiny crawl. This site alone goes page to page very slow. Anything else takes forever. Tried resetting modem and nothing.

Called Verizon, unfortunately, no help....I am going to try taking my router and getting a new one to see if that helps...will update all in Rockland with this issue.

I called verizon last night. They stated that since I have the 150/65 plan they should have used ethernet to the Actiontec instead of coax. They are coming Thursday to change it. Lets see if this works.

Same problem here guys,I am also in Chestnut Ridge,Rockland County!After trouble with the DSL I got Fios,I loved and recommended it to all but now things are terrible!I might get a good number with Speedtest.net one second then get a terrible reading the next!This is an intermittent signal problem that goes up and down one minute to the next as I can see with Speedtest.net's other Tests for Packets,Ping,Jitter,one minute I get a Grade of B but then I get C's and F's over and over?Why can't they just say we are having problems and will fix it instead of blaming their customers systems?I knew it was not my system but went to two different neighbors houses and used different computers to Test their Fios systems just in case...both had the same problems and then I read your reports and find the same,This Just Isn't Right!Good Luck To All ,hope a fix comes soon!

Same here.

speedtest.verizon.net reports at or above promised speed; for me that's 25/5. Sure. Of course.

Other "non-Verizon" speedtests (speakeasy, AT&T, speedtest.net, CNET) give mixed and inconsistent results. Paths to Chicago are at advertised speeds. Some paths to NYC are fair (16/5) while others are terrible (100K/5) -- that's K, not M!

Upload speed is ALWAYS consistent and as advertised.

Rebooted ONT, Reset and rebooted MOCA router (Actiontech) several times, rebooted Sonicwall appliance, rebooted several computers, tested at ONT with laptop. No improvements. After a long phone session with a Verizon tech, problem SEEMED to be fixed. But 10 minutes later it's back. Some speed tests show a graph of the throughput -- which often starts fine and then "crashes" to nothing, sometimes spiking back, but then hitting rock bottom again. Always on DOWNLOAD, UPLOAD seems fine.

I don't think it's a DNS issue based on my testing. I have also ruled out everything on my side of the NIC (ONT, I guess). Packet loss is low and ping latency doesn't seem to be a problem.

Glad (in a sick way) to hear it's not just me.

I suspect the problem lies where Verizon connects to the internet. I thought it was a storm related issue, since I noticed it yesterday. Perhaps not. Either something is broken or the interface between the small pipes and large pipes is congested or over capacity because some of the equipment that would normally handle the traffic is down, and now they are trying to put 17 pounds of data in a 5 pound channel.

I'm in Rockland County also. Nanuet, near PathMark on Rt. 59.

If it's any consolation I'm in Southern California with 25/25 and seeing exactly the same thing. Went through rebooting and testing everything and the tech on the phone told me that my router must be going bad. We all know that probably isn't right but I'll install the new Generation E routher (that supports wireless N) anyway.

You know it's their backbone.

Experiencing the same thing outside of DC. The download speeds are just awful and the WIFI router has been cutting out every hour or two for a week now. Plugging directly in with an Ethernet still works but the only option with the WIFI is to reset the box every few hours or plug in a separate WIFI. Sadly, Verizon's speed checker still shows 25/25 DL/UL speeds while every other speed check on the internet is showing between 2 and 4 MB/s. Downloads on ITunes are running about .2 MB per second so Verizon has a big problem here.

Spent time on phone with tech... escalated to the "network" techs.

RSB is right. Various tracert tests indicate problem is somewhere around

which I believe is a Verizon peering point. Maybe they didn't pay thier bill. Routes that don't have this hop seem to run fine.

I've been seeing the same problem for about a week. I'm in West Nyack, Rockland County. My brother has the same plan as me (35Mbps) but he is in New City and seems to be fine.

My experience is pretty much all the parts described by everyone else who has posted here. I have been on the phone with technicians for days who have come to the house and replaced every piece of equipment and every inch of wire. Nothing helps. They moved me from the coax to the ethernet from the ONT to the router. At one point I had my laptop plugged directly into the ethernet on the ONT bypassing the router all together. Still had the same problem. The technician just shrugged and had no answers and left.

As of this morning I was livid. An **bleep** can see this was a network problem and not an issue in my equipment but they insisted on sending a tech out again. I lost it. Started tweeting up a storm and caught someones attention over there. He allowed me to send him the following info. The tech's name is Tony and he sounds like he has a genuine interest in finding the real problem and not blaming my equipment and treating me like an **bleep** who knows nothing so he can close a ticket quickly.

Hopefully they will find and fix this soon. Really sucks.

---------MESSAGE TO VERIZON BELOW------------

First, thanks for trying to help. To be honest I am livid about the situation so far, but at least hopeful to have what seems to be the right kind of attention now.

In general the quality of my connection when downloading is poor. This is a tough issue to describe because it is spotty and somewhat intermittent and does not appear in simple tests but is clearly present during the course of normal use. Because of this, my claims about poor quality connection/speed have been easily dismissed by a long line of phone techs. I couldnt blame the first few, but after going along with all the standard procedures thus far and getting no where, I am irritated when I continue to be told that nothing is wrong. Here is a heap of indicators that there is an issue somewhere. Taken alone, I understand that each of these things can be explained away easily, but these are not isolated incidents. They are on going all day and they have turned my experience using FIOS for internet access into a nightmare.

Note: My brother lives two towns away (about 15 min drive) from me. He has the same FIOS service that I do. I have asked him to run the same tests from his house as a control. Please keep that in mind as you read on. I am not an **bleep**. I am well aware of the concepts of server load, network latency, etc. I do not expect a full 35Mbps on every single download I do, or even close. However, when I'm getting 3Mpbs or less from 90% of sources, there is something wrong.

Second note: Before these problems started about 2 weeks ago, everything was perfect and my connection was solid and blazing fast.

1. General download speed is poor. I have been trying to download a 200MB file from my company box.com account for days. It takes hours to come down and the connection often stalls completely. My brother downloads the exact same file without a problem.

2. Downloading a 2 minute trailer on an Apple TV takes 15 - 20 min. Not the case at my brothers house. Also, it does not matter what movie I choose or what time of day or night I try it. Same result.

3. I connect to a Ventrilo server all day for work as I have done for the last 5 years. Since the problems began I have noticed that the "ping" to the server goes up and down like a steady wave form, going from about 15 which has always been the case to 750 and back down and back up, etc. The host name is xxxxx.typefrag.com. I believe its in Wash DC area if you need that to try to track packets. Works perfectly at my brothers house like it did for me before two weeks ago when all of these problems started.

4. When streaming music from Pandora the music pauses for 5 seconds on a somewhat regular interval that coincides with the rise in ping values on the Ventrilo connection.

5. Seeing that my connection was going bad I turned to some speed tests. http://www.speedtest.net has a download test that runs for about 30 sec. In the best cases, the connection starts off strong at 35 Mbps and then around 15 - 20 sec in it stalls out and the speed drops dramatically to less than 1Mbps. The test takes the avg and gives me download speed ratings of around 3Mbps or less. Some servers are slightly faster and a lot of them are much worse. The strangest part is that the upload speed is always exactly what it should be! 20Mbps or more! Now I realize the disdain that verizon has for these speed tests but understand that I am not some fool who is arguing with you about why I am not getting exactly 35 Mbps to every Joe Blows server on earth every single time I connect. I'm well aware of how IP works and network topology. I'm using these tests as a tool to confirm that something is definitely wrong. Less than 3Mbps in the best cases to a wide range of servers is a sign that something is not right. Not to mention that upload speed is consistently high! I tried the speakeasy speed tests and the results are consistent. At my brothers house the results range from 15Mbps to the crappy servers all the way up to 35Mbps.

6. Verizon techs who came to the house and spoke to me by phone all shot me down for using the non-verizon speed tests. So I ran the Verizon speed test and everything showed up peachy of course. The techs shot me down on everything else after that ... al because this ridiculously unrealistic test said everything is OK. Lets look at this realistically. The test pulls data for 10 seconds. That is not long enough for the problem to manifest. Its only on the big downloads that go past 20 sec or the persistent connections that you start to see the problem. Second, the test never crosses more than a few hops while traveling on the mostly local Verizon portion of the network. So I guess the advertised speed of 35Mbps is only for connections to my neighbors house and Im supposed to be ok with less than 3Mbps to over 90% of the rest of the internet? That is absurd.

So I ran the precious Verizon speed test to some other locals. I found that to the following locations my download comes up as less than 1Mbps!!

My upload speed is always 30Mbps or better. That is consistent to what I am seeing with the other tests. Every other state on the verizon test gives me a perfect score. From my brothers house, ALL states come up as a perfect score. I have continued to test these all day. There is no change yet.

7. Its not my computer. I have 4. They all perform exactly the same. I took my laptop to my brothers house and achieved perfect scores. Came back home and everything sucks again.

8. Its not wired vs wireless. I have some wireless and some wired computers. Its the same on both. When the last tech was here I had my laptop in the garage plugged directly into the wall unit there. No router to blame. Nothing. Same crappy results. That wall unit had just been replaced the week before. Have we exhausted the silly protocol steps? Can we start treating this like a real problem and solve it now?

Verizon is sending a tech with a laptop to my house to plug into the ONT and coordinate with a network engineer while he is jacked in for realtime network testing.

Hopefully that will yield something other than excuses.

Same for me - I'm in Montgomery County, Maryland. For the last week or two, Hulu streams have been almost unwatchable. I've run the Fios speed test, and in the evenings am seeing download speeds consistently below 1Mbps (I have the 20/5 plan). Mornings are a different story - always close to 25Mbps downloads.

It's now 3:45am EST in Rockland county, and I'm back to 25/5 to NYC and 16/5 to SeaTac. I'm happy. I hope it keeps.

Not sure I will ever know what the real problem was, but the bottom line is that "verizon" seems to have fixed it.

I must say, although I've had my beefs with tech customer service in the past, this experience was excellent in terms of Verizon response. Nobody asked me to reload an operating system or check if my computer was plugged in.

Granted, I'm a geek... (actually, I'm way older than term even existed in it's current meaning... I don't chew lightbulbs or drive nails into my skull, but I also couldn't get a date with a fist full of $100 bills. One customer service rep accused me of working for Verizon. Nah, it's just so much of my life revolves around the technology I can't help but try and understand it...)

Anyhow, my point is that "Richard" and "Lorelei" were exemplary and I didn't have to fight my way to Tier 2, or 3. There was no truck roll (although I do think the neighbors were a bit suspicious of me hanging out on the side of my house with a headlight and a laptop at wee hours in the morning) but I don't mind doing tracert sweeps at midnight if it gets me back.

I hope everybody else is fixed, not only my contemporaries in Rockland but also the DC, Cali, and elsewhere folks.

The forum is a great tool. Sometimes we vent a bit (and I am no exception by far) but again, I have to admit although I spent some considerable effort, Verizon matched my aggression and now it seems all is well.

BUT, if you still have a problem, don't be shy to voice it. Here and/or directly with Verizon.

Things started improving last night. Download speeds at the different speed testing sites, both domestic and in the UK both show 25/5 which is what I've asked for. Pings are back down, and dropped packets are back to normal compared to my original post.

I'd love to know what Verizon did to fix the problem.

In the meantime, Verizon was kind enough to send me a new router that I'll install over the weekend.

Here's to hoping this was all a bad dream, and a great future with FIOS.

As of 8:30 PM Friday, the Verizon speed test is showing normal (24-25 Mbps) download speeds here in MontCo Maryland. Hopefully they will stay that way. Thanks to Verizon for dealing with this issue!

Are you still seeing speed issues though? The alter.net (Verizon Business) router at hop 7 may in fact still be seeing issues and just has ICMP on lower priority, but that traceroute seems pretty clean the rest of the way. That latency is not too bad for taking a jump all the way to Los Angeles, CA from Washington DC.

Trouble here also. First time since 2005 I am not getting advertized up to speeds. Construction, Over Subscription, BPON areas finnaly overloaded?

My tech ticket was closed and I was told that the engineers tested everything 9/21 and everything was fine... the problem (if any) lies outside of the Verizon network ans is not Verizon's responsibility.

They also claimed alter.net had no business relationship with Verizon, and if I had a complaint I should contact whoever runs alter.net . . . the rep refused to admit any of the dozens of trace routes I sent over the past week showed any problems. She claimed they all completed (which they didn't) and if the trace route completes, that's "good enough" for Verizon.

My speeds have dropped again -- not nearly so bad, but the full advertised speed was fleeting and test results are back to being intermittant and unpredictable.

Same problem with the rest of yous guys...I am here in Fairfax County in the DC Metro area and I am on the 150/65 plan and my upload speeds are atrocious...I am getting 5.41MB upload on Speedtest.Net...SIGH...Rebooting router and computer....

Yet www.alter.net redirects you to verizonbusiness.com. I'm no networking guru, but it sure looks to me like there's a direct relationship between the two. And a 'whois' shows that the technical contact for alter.net is Verizon Business Technical Support.

The pings should only steadily go up, not go up and then back down. The fact that that router is coughing up 160-170ms along the way is lame when it comes go gaming/streaming.

Anyways, having contacted Verizon finally, their tech support first asks me what hop the lag spike is happening at. After I tell them (hop 7), they tell me that anything on or after hop 7 is not on their end and I should check with wherever I'm trying to reach. It's a bit odd though because it's still on ALTER.NET and the IP domain is the same, but I didn't know what else to say to the tech.

Although the interim servers are suppose to eventually respond to pings, many servers have it on a low priority. So interim servers having a higher ping may mean a server is quite busy, but does not necessarily mean a problem. If pings on later portions of the traceroute are lower, that is an indicator that it is not a big problem for gaming etc.

Grace Hopper used to give out foot long sections of wire to represent nanoseconds to remind people that distance that ideally a signal can carry. Early computers developed lots of problems because the wired path was too long. A signal across the country even if direct no hops and no delays would take something like 16 ms. But we know the world isn't that perfect.

I am in the Northern VA/DC Metro area and I have the 150/65 internet package and my speeds are below cable...This is some BullSugar...VZ needs to fix this and I mean ASAP...I pay well WE ALL pay way too much money for this service....Look at these speedtests I just did on my computer at 8:45PM tonight...

I am in the same area, bur Montgomery County, and could not get Quantum 150/65. Now I am glad I am at Quantum 75/35 maybe. Who needs 500 Horse Power when you can only go 55 on the beltway if your not sitting in traffic?

Good one and don't get me started on this crappy behind DC traffic....Also Virginia now is making the Beltway one big @$$ toll road costing us about $20 one way....LAWD!!!! Let's build more roads Virginia and NO SUBWAY....LAWD!!!!

Hello Everyone,

Sorry to say but there seems to be a problem again,the signal is good at timesl(15 or 20,paying for 50)but it's intermittent and constantly jumpy and skipping,I can always tell there is something wrong when the video playing is continually buffering , something that never happened for the first couple of years that I had FIOS,I was wondering if anyone else is having problems?I then check Speakeasy,which always gives the best picture of how my computer is actually running(where the Verizon test does not and is really not reliable at all) and not only get a low reading but the red ball that shows the test's progress constantly stops,skips and freezes all through the test?It always seems the worst when using the servers around the New York area?Thanks again for all the help in getting this problem to the forefront but we now have to get it fixed completely!

Yea I take the MARC commuter train from Germantown Maryland to Union station every day. Free parking in Germantown, and with a monthly or weekly MARC train ticket the Metro bus is free when I get to DC. I refuse to pay the subway. At Germantown the train station is 1.8 miles from my house. Relaxing and I can eat and drink on the train. Even pop a cold beer on the way home if I choose. Don't really do that though.

Sorry for being off topic. But I laugh at all the cars on the road. Smiley LOL

I just did the speakeasy.net/speedtest (one I've used ever since I got verizon, and have only been using speedtest.net based on their recomendation) these are my results:

Download Speed: 3578 kbps (447.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 18476 kbps (2309.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

PingTest is the only way I can get an Ooakla server

I guess its good that I can't even get the verizon speed test to make it past Testing in process.

Love my fios, and while I'm willing to put up with it for awhile it sure won't be forever.

Anyone have any issues getting bills adjusted?

Well, I new to this discussion, but I experienced very similar speed slowdown with my FiOS 50/25 service yesterady, 9/29, particularly in the evening. I'm in Fairfax County, VA, just outside the beltway. Upload speeds seemed to stay high throughout most of the day and evening, but download speeds decreased to as little as 0.5 mbps at times. Usually, could get somewhere betwen 3-9 mbps, but nowhere near the promised speeds. Tried all different types of online speedtests, and all seemed to confirm that the download speeds were slowing to pretty much a crawl. Tried to download a TV show on my Apple TV which normally takes less than 30 seconds before it is ready to view, and it said something like your show will be ready in 1 hour 45 minutes.

Now, of course this morning, 9/30, internet speeds seem to be back up where they are supposed to be - just tested on speedtest.net and got a 31 mbps download and 39 upload (as an aside, I have never gotten anywhere close to 50 mpbs on the download side).

The most natural explanation seemed to me to be network congestion, particularly since I was experiencing these issues on a Saturday and, in particular, a Saturday evening. But, download speeds as low as 0.5 mbps? I mean, I might as well connect my devices using my iPhone mobile hotspot. Sounds like from the discussion on this board that I am not alone in my problems, so I am guessing it is a network wide problem. I know I have not had these types of problems in the past with FiOS internet service.

AirJay81 I fear it isn't anything even techs will be able to fix, as someone said they had to fight to get the gateway reset at the central office (my guess something happened with the storms two weeks ago). I'll know more after my first tech visit Monday, but I'm guessing I'll have a visit where they run new wires, another visit to replace ONT and then I'll just be back trying to beg to get the gateway at the CO reset, and if by Oct 31st this is still going on I'll head back to comcast .

Verizon has enough good will from me over the years to give them a real shot to fix it even if I do think it should only be 1 call to the CO to get help.

Update Tech vist, great guy stayed and monitored and really got to see how I'd get 3mbps then 20mbps, and then 10mbps, exc. Called in to the CO or some kind of employee only tech center, and the guy on the phone seemed compitent enough, and I pretty much got the answer I was expecting (we won't reset the central office gateway (yet) becuase 1 or 2 reports, basically tech said get people to call!!! )

So he's coming back tomorrow to run pings and its been teir 2 escladed... I just worry they'll come back it'll be fine and then I'm back to square one 😞

My guess eventually we'll get to the Gateway

Join the club I live in Voorhees, NJ. I have an iMac and get the spinning rainbow ball everywhere on the net the last several days.

Doing a speedtest doesn't indentify the problem. It's all at Verizon's end. I am locked into a contract but this is totally unacceptable. This is so bad you would think FIOS is going back to dial-up. I have triple play with the Ultimate TV package and 35/35 internet. My bill is about $185 a month. Considering FIOS is done with build out they should spend their time getting this resolved. Verizon keeps running this TV commercial with a James Earl Jones telling me how fast FIOS. It's laughable. If I wasn't having worst problems with Comcast I would cancel and switch back. I am stuck with FIOS. It's inexcusable that they constantly have this problems with these slowdowns.

Things are definitely better than a month ago but there still a continuity problem,signal is still jumpy and intermittent?When using both wired and wireless I get a good number one minute but the next test it falls off to 3-7 mbps?(it's seems worse when the test uses servers from around the New"Yawk" area)

My whole connection pretty much took a dive today , S.Calif 92584 (and yes , I did above and beyond the usual tests and hardware checks) . I could not even reach this forums earlier , but my connection is still way off base as we speak . I did pings and tracert earler with complete packet loss . Now my upload has improved since earlier but is still not up to snuff and my download is still almost non exsistant (1Mb to 4.1 mbps) ; a far cry from the 50/35 .

Right now I cant even download a full set of Nvidia drivers (100mb+) without it taking almost 40 minutes (usually done in about 14+ secs) !!!

Btw , the is all hardwired speeds , no Wifi at all with the newer Gig E router . (also tested with my own gig router)

Not sure whats going on here , but I did notice my IP changed back to 173. vs previous 8.x or 9.x that had been run for the last few weeks . In the past years my IP was around the 173.

I going to do a complete shut down all night on the router and see what happens in the morning .

Took a dive today as well, 92562 - 50/35 as well. Rebooted ONT, router, etc. Tech support is a waste of time, I don't even think most of them even know the basics if networking. Using my mobile phone because I can't even log in to this site due to time outs...same thing, every once in a rare while I get advertised speeds...and I do mean RARE! Upload speed is typically above 30mbps but sometimes low as well, download is 99% less than 0.3mbps!!!

After painstakingly slow speeds all day I finally walked away, got something to eat, watched some tv and came back and decided to run another test before turning in for the evening...

Hope it stays so I can get some work done tomorrow...would really like to know what was/is going on though...

Ok , this moring I "thought" things were ok , but they are not . Speed test shows ok ( does not mean much really) ; but Iam still getting "HTTP 404 not found" on 3/4 of my web pages . Ive done pings and tracerts again with 50-75% of them doing timeout's . I can barely get anywhere online still , including THIS forum (took 10-15 triies to get into the verizon forums) .

My bill for FIOS is due in about 8 days , hope they fix this crap or they may just have to wait for payment . 😛

I'm loving it! I can enjoy not-watching videos online like never before! And the LAG in games? I couldn't ASK for more! Verizon knows how to deliver....whatever it is they deliver....to their customers!!
