Possible Router replacement?

Hello, I've been using verizon fios for about 3 years.

Since the beginning of this year, my wifi connection started to get weaker.

When I first got the internet I was able to connect to wifi from upstairs but

now I need to wait a long time to get connected and the download speed dropped dramatically.

When I'm down stairs near the router, I have no problem but I can tell that the wifi signal/ download speed has dropped dramtically.

I was wondering if Im eligible for an updated replacement router or do I have to purchase a new one?

I've checked the price tag $79.99, pretty pricey....

Can anyone suggest a possible solution or a fix to my problem?

Your asking peers here not verizon.

Note they will replace routers if you can convince them its defective. They however will not guarantee an upgrade to the latest model, in fact will probably give you what they have on hand, perhaps even an older model than you have now.

I recently had my ~2 year old router MI424WR replaced at no charge because the Ethernet ports failed -Thanks Verizon for the great customer service!

The even better news is that I got a Rev I router with GigE and 802.11n; this is the router they sell for $79.99. As far as speed goes, it works great.

The not so good news is that the WiFi range in 802.11n mode is lower than the old 802.11g router. I had to move the router from my basement to the 1st floor to get decent coverage for the whole house. I recently tried a pair of +9dBi Alfa antennas, however they appear to make little difference.

I might be able to get the range back by switching the router to 802.11g only, however I'd rather have speed than range.

So, I do not consider the new rev I router as a means to increase WiFi range. If range is what you're after, I suggest adding a WiFi access point.

I have had my Rev. I router for probably 9 months now, and it seems to me that my wireless signal range from my Rev. I is at least as good as the signal from either the Rev. D or Rev. F that I previously used (really quite a bit better than the Rev. D signal). I wonder, have you checked the transmit power setting?

Maybe for some reason yours is not set to 100%. Other than that, no idea why your signal seems to be weaker.

Oh, one other thing: From what you said it appears that you have the router set for "Performance Mode(802.11N", right? If so, are you using AES encryption? If not I suggest you try that setting, I found my wireless speed increased significantly when I switched to AES.

Yes, transmit power is set to 100%; that was the 1st thing I checked.

I use 802.11 b/g/n compatibly mode, as I have b/g and n devices in my home.

Speed is not the issue, range is. Bottom line is the rev I router has less range in my home than the rev F it replaced. Judging from posts on these forums, it looks like I'm not the only one with range issues.
