$10.00 Fios Internet Upgrade

Just wondering if anyone can confirm that I'm wasting $10.00 a month. Upgraded to the increased speeds after seeing the ads that were promising increased performance for wireless devices. After receiving the upgrade tested the speeds (wireless) and noticed I was getting the same speed. Called Verizon and was told I would have to upgrade my router for $90.00, so basically paid a $10.00 per month upgrade for nothing. Can't even stream the Verizon App on Android without freezes. Ads were deceptive.

Or, just get a $30 access point and hang it off of your current router using a wired connection. Otherwise, stick to using a wired connection wherever possible. You pay for Fiber service, not LTE 🙂

Also be aware, some services including Netflix have been problematic a night due to peering feuds. Verizon and the other company at play need to settle their differences and quit making the Internet run worse than it already does for everyone.

Yes, you got ripped off. I heard the same ads, they did promise higher wireless speeds, which is not true if they don't upgrade your router which they charge $99.99 to do.

Not sure of the wording of these upgrade offers. Obviously intranet wireless speed is dependent more on whether you have a router that supports wireless-n or not.

Higher internet speeds are of course necessary if you want to have more devices doing internet access at the same time, but slower wireless access can limit this.

When it comes to wireless there are way to many factors when it comes to the actual speeds you will get. Location, the channel the router is set to, interference, range, your network card in your computer (which can be a big factor), how many devices are connected to the router, etc.. If you are getting the speeds wired then you are getting what they advertise. Even their fine print says "wired".

I know it was possible to get close to 50 mbps down on an old g band Westell router because I had one before I upgraded. My laptop however could only do 25 max because of the old network card that came with it. Bought a usb adapter and worked great. It could be one or many factors that slow the speeds down for you though.
