I do NOT have any favorites set up, etc but when surfing using the remote control up/down channel buttons, some channels are skipped. I cannot figure out why.
Please help/advise.

It would help if you tell us what channels are being skipped and what TV package you are signed up for.
NBCSports (Channel 590) and DIY (667).
What ahppens if you tune to them directly? Can you see the content?
Do they show up in the guide?
Have you tried to reboot the box?
Try rebooting the STB by pulling the power out for 15 seconds then plug it back in and wait a few minutes for the STB to reload. When it is finished reloading check the channels to see if they stopped skipping.
