I have the Droid.
I agree with a lot of you that I am mostly happy with it, however as some of you, I am also extremely **bleep** off about how the DROID f/k/a Droid Does, is being replaced w/in three months or so of being out. I like Verizon, and really have no issues either way regarding ATT and the iPhone, however, the way Android and the manufacturers of the phones and the carriers are handling this concerns me.
1st, let me just say that the only way Motto Droid, or any older model phone that Verizon or any other carrier has on their plan will continue to be updated, is if Verizon Or any carrier, wants it. (If Motto wants to sell phones on their plan and Android wants to keep building is OS through one of the largest carriers, it needs Verizon.
2nd Why would any manufacturer do this? The more people it leaves out there wanting for the technology, the more people they will get to buy phones. The manufacturers could care less about the people on ANY Carriers, as they sell phones to all of them. The better OS their new phones have, the more people want to update their existing handsets...why update the droid to Nexus 1 if the Droid will get the Nexus 1 capabilities, right?
3rd, in my humble opinion, Google should not be selling phones, unless they build their own and market it, reason? Because they are issuing an OS for all carriers and makes of phones to use.
With them entering the Phone selling Market, they alienate all the people who have bought into their OS, by making sure their phones are at the top and sell better, and they also pit manufacturers against one another, not for our benefit, but for the manufacturer and Google. The Manufacturers now will not care about the Top phones they just produced, but instead are fighting to get the next big contract that Google decides is going to get their latest version, because it 1 puts them in the forefront of the industry, and 2, keeps Google in the news. Why would Motto want to update Droid or even push for it, if it knows it will be getting the next generation of Nexus for Google. It will want that to be the top, not the druid. How will it sell more Nexus G's if the druid can do everything the nexus 2 can.
***********I am seriously thinking about buying out of my contract with Google and Verizon, with my Droid and My wife's Iris, and going to AT & T and the iPhone. At least when there is an update to the OS, every phone gets it, not the ones that some **bleep** in management decides should have it, and if the iPhone you have is too old to receive the update, most likely it is time for a new two year update and they help you with it, however my Droid is less than 4 months old and already....it is the third best thing out.
At least iPhone owners do not have to say that. Even their 2 G runs the OS and the apps the same as the 3gs, maybe not as fast, but it does do it from what I am told.
I am not an iPhone fan, and this pains me, but I am sure most of you all cannot keep up with new tech, and buying new phones every 4 months. It is hard enough to do it every two years, however if you want your phone to be able to do what the next best thing is, you have to buy a new phone, even though the phone you have has the hardware capabilities.
At least with Windows, if your computer has windows 98 and you want to upgrade, you can at least have th eooption to buy it and it will install and have all the features of the newer version, no questions asked. This is not even being offered here. the only way to upgrade to 2.1 or any other new OS coming out is to "root?" your phone which I see could negate warrenties and possibly ruin the phone/....... In My opinion just plain **bleep**ty!
My 2 and 1/2 cents, take it for what it is worth, 2 and 1/2 cents
