I want to use my own router and keep tv guide

Just had fios installed TV and internet.

ONT has coax and cat5 running to verizon router and coax also running to cable box

I would like to use my own router instead of the verizon router. I have a netgear nighthawk and I need it to get wifi throughout my house.

I also have a buch of ports forwarded for a surveillance system.

I tried plugging the cat5 from the ONT directly into my router but it wouldnt connect to the internet.

Is this possible

I have a good idea of whats up here. Just to re-confirm, your nighthawk is connected, and you can access the internet from it?

I believe the problem is that your Nighthawk is handing out LAN IPs in the range of 192.168.1.X, which is also what the G1100 hands out, so the G1100 and Nighthawk network are overlapping.

You'll need to change the IP range that the G1100 uses for the set top boxes. To do this, please login to the G1100 (Easiest way to do this would be to plug an ethernet cable from the G1100 into your computer). Go to http://192.168.1.1/ and enter the username and password listed on the side of the router.

Once you've logged in follow these steps:

Click My Network at the top of the screen. Then click Network Connections on the sidebar of the page that will appear.

Click on Network (Home/Office).

Click the Settings button at the bottom of the page.

Look for the portion of the settings page which says Use the following IP address:, you should see 192.168.1.1. This is what you have to change.

Change the address to 192.168.5.1.

You just need to change two more settings before moving on. Scroll down a bit to the IP Address Distribution section. You'll see a "Start IP address" and "End IP address" section. Change these from 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.5.2 and 192.168.5.254.

Your configuration should look like this (images may not always show up due to them needing moderated manually):

Lastly, click Apply at the bottom of the page. The Verizon router will reboot. Reboot your set top boxes, and check for connectivity.

Hey!

This is certainly possible.

You need to login to the Verizon router initially and change a few things before you plug in your router. Which router model do you have? Since its a newer install, I assume you have the G1100, but just to confirm, which router looks like yours:

Assuming its the one on the left, continue to follow these directions (The interfaces are different, but the steps are generally the same for both devices.)

Step 1: Log into the router at http://192.168.1.1 (username and password is on the router itself). Then navigate to My Network > Network Connections > Broadband Connection (Ethernet / Coax)

From here, click the "Release DHCP Lease" button. Doing this will allow your own router to get a new IP from Verizon and start working over Ethernet. This is what was holding you up when you were plugging in your own router.

Optional:

Not required but highly suggested, turn off the WiFi of the Verizon router if you plan to be using your own router. You can disable wifi by navigating to Wireless > Basic Security Settings > Turning 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz to "Off"

Step 2: Plug in your Netgear router into the WAN Ethernet from the ONT. Give it a minute to get an IP, then check internet connectivity.

Step 3: In order to keep on demand and video guide service, plug your old Verizon router's white WAN port into the LAN port of your netgear router. This allows your Verizon set top box's to still have a data connection.

You should be good to go!

Are you using Verizon STB for TV?

If so, it would be best to use Verizon router.

They have all of the correct ports open that the STs need for guide as well as VOD and remote DVR viewing.

To use your own router, you would not only have to get the right ports open, you would need to have a MOCA bridge as STBs use coax for Internet.

You could use the Netgear as an Access Point (put in bridge mode) if you like its WIFI performance better.

Just out of curiousity, is the open ports for the STBs a requirement?

For my job I've setup at least 7-8 locations where we replaced the Verizon router, and followed my method above to provide the STBs with internet access. Each time the STBs still got VOD, Guide and DVR access.

Doing a TCPDump on all of the activity from the STBs I also notice that they are always sending outgoing connections to Verizon servers for VOD, Guide and DVR access, and I haven't seen any incoming traffic.

I'm aware of the remote access port that prompts for login on the STBs, and I assume this is for Verizon to troubleshoot, but again at 7 different locations we have yet to run into issues with this.

Again, I don't mean to sound rude, I'm just purely curious.

May depend on model.

If it is the older legacy STB, you may be able to get away with it.

But I believe the new Quantum devices require it.
Esepcially if you want to be able to use the FIOS app to control DVR and remotely view recorded content.

I can't say for 100% as I have never tried it, but I have seen other posts where people have tried it and have had issues.

Hi,

I just switched to Verizon and I miss my Nighthawk router. I followed your directions but couldn't get my Nighthawk to connect to the Verizon Internet. Yes, I did a DHCP lease release before turning off the G1100. I even tried to renew the DHCP lease but that didn't change things. At least I'm able to go back to the G1100.

Is there something else I need to do?

How does your g1100 get internet? Coax or Ethernet.

If you don't have Ethernet from ont to router, then you are not provisioned for Ethernet.

Most routers do not support coax internet.

Which you will need some sort of moca gateway to provide guide to stbs.

I've been using non-V* routers in front for years. I currently have an ASUS RT-AC68U in front of the V*, which is only a MOCA bridge. I turned the DHCP off along with the wireless.

The only function I don't have is the remote-access dvr. Not a big deal for me. Bandwidth is more important to me.

This is perfect. Releasing the DHCP was what I was missing. Once I did that and plugged my OnHub into the ONT it lit right up and works great. No more Verizon router! I did have to speak with tech support beforehand to have them enable my Ethernet port.

I have not done it yet, but I believe you need to call Verizon and have them switch your ONT from coax to Ethernet. They can do it while you are on the phone. I am not unhappy with the G1100 but I have at least 20 plus wireless devices, a Wink hub, plus the STBs. I believe that you can use the Verizon router as your MoCA adapter by plugging the WAN into your router's LAN port. I have heard the apps, etc all still work. Another option is purchasing an Actiontec MoCA adapter to replace the Verizon router. The adapter allows your guide, on demand and DVR to use Ethernet to Coax. Please correct me if I am wrong.

When you say switch your ONT from COAX to Ethernet. How do you know if this is done? Currently my setup has both a COAX and Ethernet feed going into my G1100 router. I'm guessing based on that my Ethernet is active?

I, too, would like to have my own router. I bought and set up a Dlink DIR-895 and it connected right up (though I had to return it because the 2.4ghz didn't work at all). My method (as opposed to your method) was keeping everything the same on the Fios router (192.168.1.1) and hooking to the dlink WAN port. The dlink ip is 192.169.0.1 . I was surprised this worked without a problem (though I only used it for a few hours before I discovered the 2.4ghz problem). Is this a viable connection method and did it work simply because the Dlink was on a different subnet (192.168.0.1)? Thanks. I really value the education.

I read the thread and I would just like to make sure if I understood it correctly. I recently had Fios installed. Only opted for the internet. I have a Netgear Nighthawk too I wanted to use as the range on the G1100 is horrible compared to it. So if my G1100 is already connected to the ONT via an ethernet cable, I could directly connect said cable to my Netgear router's Internet port and use it without the G1100? I was looking around for info on this and everyone was saying I had to put the G1100 on bridge mode. Some even said the Nighthawk can't be used directly as it isn't a modem. So which is which?

Your correct. You can completely replace the G1100. The comments saying that it needs to be in bridge mode only applies to users with FiOS TV.

However, you do need to release the DHCP lease from the G1100 router before plugging in your own router or else your own router will not get an IP. Follow these instructions. This only has to be done once.

To release DHCP lease via the router GUI, follow the below steps on the Actiontec or FiOS Quantum Gateway.

First, connect your computer to either the ethernet port on the G1100 or its wifi network. Then go to http://192.168.1.1/ in any web browser. Login to the page (login info is on the side of the router on a sticker.) Now follow these steps:

1	Click on the My Network icon at the top.
2	Click Network Connections from the menu on the left.
3	Click Broadband Connection
4	Click Settings
5	Scroll down and click Release under DHCP Lease
6	Click Apply
7	Disconnect the router immediately to prevent it from re-requesting a DHCP lease.

Once the G1100 router is disconnected, simply plug in your nighthawk, and you should have internet! If you have any issues, post back here.

UGH! Thanks for the quick response. If I knew it would be this case, I wouldnt' have bought a G1100. I bought one to avoid those monthly "rental" fee. I could have let them install it using their device and then give it back to them once I installed the Nighthawk.

netgear states their routers will not function in stand alone mode. My Nighthawk when connected directly would not get the full speeds. On calling Netgear they stated I had to use it only in AP mode. Which it did function after doing so.

the newest Nighthawk router I was told will function as a total stand alone. Of course I am not going to purchase a $600 after buying a $400 one. Just to find out.

i have read other routers have been proven to function with Fios without bridge or access point mode. But if only on internet only.

You can completely replace the Verizon supplied router with your own. Immediately after getting my 750/750 installation completed 2 days ago and while the tech was still here, and after teh ONT was activated i plugged in my laptop directly into the ONT ethernet port and did some surfing and extensive speedtests. Right after that, i started using my own router, a Netgear R7000 and i just replaced that with a Ubiquiti ER-8pro to get much closer to GigEthernet switching speeds off of the LAN port. altho the R7000 is highly rated itself by Tim Higgins at SmallNetBuilder as a very close to GigEthernet switchng wired performance winner. In case you did want to use your own router with television Set Top Boxes there is an indepth and extensive guide over at DSL Reports in the Verizon FIOS Most FAQ section about that topic with 10 diffrent ways to do this, i favor methods 6,7 &8, altho method 6 described therein is the easiest and just involves relegating the Verizon Router as a second router behind your own router. Ussing yourown router is best in most cases of power users where a lot of traffic will take place and you dont want NAT table problems and want to maintain top speeds and especially with VLANs and VPN performance, as long as your own router is able to handle that. Refer to SmallNetbuilder for appropriate top performing store bought routers, or use a Vyatta OS based Ubiquiti router which are incredible values, or a build your own with OPNsense or VyOS downloadable install CD's and some X550-T2 Intel cards which are rated with the new N-BAse standard so you can sync with present and future emerging speed tiers, the X550-T2 cards will sync at 100 or GigE or 2.5Gbps or 5 Gbps or 10GBE (10GE), so it gives you quite a bit of flexibility for future growth.

You are correct regarding users with Internet only setups. When setup like this, the network is no different from any other ISP out there. Netgear's knowledge base isn't updated, as it is completely possible and feasible to use their router as your primary with Verizon's newer setups.

Verizon used to run a coax cable to their older Actiontec routers, rather than ethernet. While it would be possible to use your own router with these setups, I doubt netgear wanted to deal with trying to walk users through running ethernet cables from their ONT, getting the ethernet port provisioned, etc etc.

With the new method of installations that Verizon has been using, which is an ethernet cable direct to the ONT, its much easier to swap out your own router (as long as your internet only, and you don't rely on remote DVR). Its simply plug and play. But again, I assume Netgear says this isn't possible because they don't want to deal with support calls when it comes to more complex setups (such as FiOS TV).

However, jonjones, I am very curious as to why you've seen degraded speeds when using your own router! After performing probably over 50 or more Verizon router swaps for clients, and I've personally used 3 Nighthawk routers before, I have never seen anything like this. If you were still trying to use your nighthawk, I could try and help figure out whats up with it.

I tried to do this and see if the Nighthawk would work on its own. I released the DHCP Lease and disconnected it immediately. Upon connecting the Nighthawk, everything seemed fine. All the lights were on, making it look like the router is online. When I tried to scan for the wi-fi, I couldn't locate it. I used multiple devices and all the same. When I connected a device via ethernet, it was able to connect to the internet. My daughters were able to watch on the apple tv. I decied to connect a laptop via the ethernet and see if I could access the router that way. Thinking that maybe the wifi just had to be activated or something. When I connected the laptop, I got some sort of message about another device using the IP, and to try to connect later. As the apple tv was the only one connected, I took it off. I was then able to get online using the laptop. But when I tried to access the router via http://192.168.1.1 or http://www.routerlogin.com or http://www.routerlogin.net, I get a message that I am not connected to the router's wifi. I know I am not connected to the wifi, but I am connected wried to it, so how come I can't access it? Did I do something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The ethernet cable that was unplugged from the FiOS router, where did you plug it in?

Please make sure that you plugged it into the yellow WAN port of the Nighthawk router, and not any of the 4 white LAN ports, otherwise the router will not work.

If it is already setup in this configuration, factory reset the Nighthawk router, as something is up with its configuration.

I followed this guide and while I got the STB boxes to pull guide and VOD info, I can not get the actual VOD video to play, it shows on the timeline it is playing but I get no sound or picture.

Just to make sure as well, I went and just used the Verzion router alone and everything worked as normal.

I have the G1100 Router and I'm using a Netduma R1 as my primary.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello!

If your STBs are pulling guide info, then everything is setup correctly. The issue is with the Netduma router, I've tried searching around the net on how it handles certain tasks, as from what I've read its supposed to protect users from DDoS and all sorts of other things.

The Verizon STBs get their VOD files from Verizon's VOD servers, which lives in the IP range 108.57.152.0/21 (At least thats what my boxes use, but I'm 99% sure thats network-wide).

Doing a quick packet dump from my pFsense router, we can see that it streams the videos in the format of "MPEG TS", meaning the video files are uncompressed. I've seen single 720p video files eat up 10+ Mbps of constant bandwidth.

Is it possible the Netduma is seeing this as a DDoS or something of the like? I wish I could help you more, but your router's configuration goes really in depth according to their website.

Basically, try to look into whitelisting / setting up QoS rules on your router to allow full, unrestricted access to the 108.57.152.0/21 network, and also possibly look into if your router blocks MPEG TS Packets, that could hopefully solve your problem.

All is working but when I do a speedtest from the primary Asus router from speedtest.net, frontierspeedtest or, dslreportsspeedtest I get low upload speeds and bufferbloat from dslreport test. When I do same test on the FIOS-G1100 all is good. all STBs, multi room DVR, guide and, on-demand features are all working. Do I need to reboot the ONT? Should I be able to plug the ethernet cable from ONT directly into PC and get internet; wanted to do a speedtest without router? Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated

The problem many customers are not understanding is Verizon does not guarantee the speeds they state "up to" now having said that you have a problem in Verizon's speed test is from a closed proprietary network. It would be like pinging your own router to see the connect speed. In this case you are not actually going out to the general shared net.

when I do Verizon speed tests I get 956/880 plus or minus on time of day etc.

when I test at speedtest net or dslreports or many other speed sites I get readings all over the place. I have reached 790/680 and many other times 540/430 again higher lower but not by much.

when I first obtained gigabyte service I was at 980/320 and I called tech services.

the first guy said "why complain, you have more speed than what you actually ever had" I pointed out that had nothing to do with it. However he transferred me to a higher level tech who said it was not provisioned correctly. Then in a moment of levity he said he could not get it to adjust. He put a trouble ticket in for engineering to look into it.

After three days I called back and this nice lady said she will text the engineer and find out what was up. This engineer stated it still was not fixed but guaranteed it would be by Monday. And low and behold it was fixed. The readings are still all over the place but it is better than it was.

give Verizon a call to check your provisioning.

I have the 75/75 package. My Asus ac88u is plugged into the ONT NIC ethernet port to my WAN. If I speed test any of the Asus LAN ports I get 80+Mbps down and 3 to 10Mbps upload. If I speed test Asus 2G wifi I get 80+ up and down. If test the FIOS-g1100 plugged into Asus LAN to FIOS-G1100 WAN I get 80+Mbps up and down with no bufferbloating as well from dslreports speed test. I can get the provisioned speed from everthing but the Asus LAN ports upload with a sickning amount of bufferbloating.

QoS, Portforwarding or, anything else hasn't been changed yet. Called Asus with no help or understanding what the problem is.

Im gonna unplug router and the ONT-NIC this time for a couple of hours then see if anything changes. Also release DHCP in the Asus prior to connecting.

If this fails, I'll call Frontier and will have to pay 15 extra a month for there 2nd tier service support since they will not give me support for someone elses router.

Install ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware to your ASUS router. That firmware is customized stock ASUS firmware, and has numerous pages and settings which might help you troubleshoot the issue more. No need to pay the ISP for Tier 2 support, and chances are they won't be of much help anyways.

I would follow the advice of my friend below. You can update the firmware and that may work. I would also consider the age of the Asus and it may simply be a bad device.

i see the other router is giving you good speed. I would then think faulty device.

i always keep extra routers and switches and cables and connectors etc. since I hate having to mess around with my devices.

Just returned to FiOS after a dreaded two-year stint on Cox (which, admittedly, was much easier to configure). I read this entire thread as well as the referenced FAQ on DSL reports, and still have a question:

I have an Asus RT-AC68U which I prefer to use for my own routing and network tasks. Given that I am kind of OCD, I'd prefer to simply use the G1100 to grab the IP from Verizon, and let my Asus hand out all the client IPs via DHCP or fixed IP, depending on whether the device is permanent or guest, including the STB's. But, for simplicity's sake, my assumption was that I should use option #3 from the DSL Reports list to keep all my own traffic behind my router by assigning it a static IP on the G1100, using a different subnet for my own network, and letting the G1100 handle the TV-related issues.

Does this seem like the best option? Whenever I tried in past FiOS subscriptions to put my router in front, it was nearly impossible to get support for line issues without tearing out everything and placing the Verizon router back in front.

Related: I went ahead and bought the G1100, to avoid the monthly charges, and use the Verizon-supplied STB's on my three screens. Each of the STBs is connected via coax, but could they also get all their necessary guide, etc., info off the Ethernet port on the back if I plugged them into my network? If not, WTH is that port on the box for?

I just had Fios installed this morning and fiddled with a combination of their Quantum router, my own TP-Link router, and the STB for about 2 hours.

I ended up using just my own router with the STB connected to one of the LAN ports. Everything works fine without the need of the Quantum router at all (I'm going to return it). I did configure a static ip of 192.168.1.100 for the STB and had to reboot the STB once but after it came back online, I had full access to "Video on demand" and all the TV listings. By going to Menu->Settings->System Information->(click info button)
on the STB you can check if everything's connected and working.

Just to clarify and or muddy the waters, I'll add my network solutions over the years.

I had FiOS Internet and FiOS TV service until last summer when I dropped FiOS TV and went to using a pair of Rokus and Playstation VUE. I have never used a Verizon router (except to activate the service where it seems to be required).

I have always had a Linux firewall/router, but you could substitute that with a Linksys or Netgear router with more or less the same result. I also had a TiVo DVR with a multichannel CableCard because I didn't get along with Verizon's DVR. (It crashed a lot.) My network for around a decade looked like this:

The important thing to note above is that I had both a coax connection and an Ethernet connection from the ONT. The coax provided the video signal to the Verizon STB and the TiVo DVR. The NIM-100 was added when I got FiOS TV to serve as an Ethernet to MoCA bridge that inserted Ethernet data in a fixed range of the frequencies on the coax cable. It existed only to provide the guide information and VOD data for the Verizon STB. (The STB had no Ethernet connection at all.) The TiVo DVR got its guide information from tivo.com over its Ethernet connection. The VOD for the TiVo also came over Ethernet.

Now, with the Rokus, my network looks like this:

I use a pair of Actiontec ECB6200 MoCA adapters to convert Ethernet to (Ethernet over) coax for the purpose of getting Ethernet connectivity to the Roku upstairs. So basically, I found a new purpose for the coax that used to run to the Verizon STB.
