They are done automatically with no action on customers part.
if you want to know the firmware number you access the router via 192.168.1.1 and login with you credentials located on the router and the information can be found there.
it is even easier looking at the firmware version on the Fios app. Or it use to be but I don’t use their router.
then do a google search as to latest reported firmware number.
