Modification of email settings for enhance security - Are they Manditory?

Verizon's 12/21/2011 email says: "you will need to modify your email settings to take advantage of enhanced security"

If I'm not currently concerned about email security, can I just leave things as they are?

Is Verizon going to force me to transition to the more secure settings at some time in the future, and if so, by when?

I use Thunderbird for my email... must all of the changes (incoming port / outgoing port / encryption ) be made simultaneously. I have noted that if I just try to transition outgoing port 587 to the now recommended 465, outgoing mail does not work.

Here is some information below that can help you. Unfortunately at this time these are the changes we do not have any date or can advise if this is "mandatory", however it is required at this time.
