Connected to my FIOS SSID but WIFI is is talking to Xfinity. Help!

I am moving to an apartment that is part of a house. They have a cheap Xfinity connection. I got FIOS installed and had the ONT put in my apartment. The fiber is joined in the house portion at the old ONT. I haven’t moved in yet but when I go there, the WIFI shows the SSID connected as FIOS. When I do an Ookla speed test, it shows I have an xfinity connection and xfinity IP address. My speed matches the crappy xfinity at around 20mbps. I have a 400mbps connection. Sometimes I reboot the router, sometimes the ONT. If I cross my fingers, I get back to FIOS. When I leave with the device it reverts back to xfinity. I have left an iPad there and will return tomorrow to see if it holds and maybe something is happenig when I disconnect from the FIOS network. How is this possible? I’m not logged into Xfinity at all. I have reset network settings on the iOS devices and still have to jump through hoops to get my FIOS WIFI back. Any ideas?

Does the phone ditches the FiOS WiFi connection and chooses Xfinity? You can check this by going to Settings -> WiFi SSID. You can let your phone forget the Xfinity WiFi too. Go to Serttings -> WiFi -> current connection information icon -> Forget this Network.

Since I never connected to xfinity via password, I do not have the option of forget this network.

I don't think a WiFi signal can force your phone to join.

How do you know your phone is connecting to Xfinity? Just by the speed test?

That, multiple speed tests. The Speedtest tells me what provider it’s talking to and it’s talking to xfinity. When I het back I’m going to check the IP configuration and make sure it’s assigning Fios the correct router , ip address and dns. Maybe I’ll need to manually configure and force it to accept Verizon.

It’s hard to believe how far off the answers were. “No, no problem, if it is a Fios ssid you’re connected.” Well I was hoping for a quick answer but I just got false confidence. So here is the problem and solution. As I walked in the apartment I passed by the the part of the house that has the Xfinity router. With WiFi set to on, on my iOS devices, the fios ssid would connect to the xfinity router. So yes I had a FIOS SSID but the IP, DNS and router was Xfinity. Didn’t matter the SSID, I was on Xfinity. The solution; Turn WiFi off on the device, then turn it back on once in the apartment or manually configure the FIOS SSID to the Verizon IP and router. Problem solved.

To me, it sounds like the phone may be auto-joining the "xfinitywifi" SSIDs that are often broadcast in Xfinity areas. Short of the speed test server being hosted by Xfinity (which is definitely common to come across in parts of the US), I don't see how Xfinity would be in the mix if you've ensured the two providers are completely separated in wiring. My other thought was, there is a range extender in the mix which is connected to both FiOS and Xfinity at the same time. Perhaps it is hardwired to FiOS while wirelessly connecting to the Xfinity router, or vice versa, and whatever connection you get depends on which router responds the fastest.

Definitely confusing, but if you can provide a screenshot or some photos of the setup, we can help better. Be sure to obfuscate any IP addresses (last two blocks at least) so you don't leak them.

When you come to a public board, ask for free advice, discount the information provided, fail to provide details to back up your assertions, refuse to provide actual data or screen shots and assert you know more than the people you've asked for help; what do you expect?

I provided enough detail as anyone possibly could and with that detail there was enough information to discount the simplistic answers received. I said it was talking to xfinity because it was an internal xfinity IP address with a FIOS SSID. That right there should have encouraged some critical thinking from people that get it. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, that is totally fine but don’t say “the Speedtest connects to many Comcast servers and that’s why you see Comcast.” Or you have a FIOS SSID, then you’re connected to FIOS.” As soon as I say the internal IP is xfinity, that should immediately stop those type of answers. I thanked people for trying.

I was with the FIOS installer during the installation. He ran fiber from the old ONT in the house and brought it into the apartment. Put the new ONT into the apartment. Ran coax and cat6 to the new router. All worked fine. When I left with the devices, I was than getting the xfinity internal IP on the FIOS SSID. Nothing hardwired into xfinity but certainly close enough to the Xfinity router.

I see. Sometimes the device needs time to recognize a new SSID.

Is the Xfinity password protected?

You might need to change the signal channel manually for the Verizon router.

Thanks for the screen shots, those clearly show the issue. Many people who post here have very little understanding of technical issues. Screen shots and pictures are an excellent way of getting unfiltered information. Without those, we're can only guess as to how accurate the text reports are.

What you have is a problem with your phone reporting the wrong SSID for the connected network. It has nothing to do with FiOS or Xfinity router settings. The FiOS network on your phone is clearly messed up; try "forget this network" for the FiOS network and then re-connect.

You might be better served by looking in iOS forums for issues with SSIDs not reflecting the underlying network. I'm not sure how many iOS savvy folk you'll find here.
