3rd party modems and routers hooked into Verizon DSL

In thinking ahead that receiving a replacement Westell 7500 from Verizon may not solve my problem of frequent disconnects . . . I am wondering about buying my own modem and router to use.

Is this workable? Can I connect a brand name modem of my own choosing to the Verizon DSL service?

Another advantage, I think, is that if I go with my own equipment, I can buy one of the new Range Plus N routers with the, supposed, long distance coverage area.

But, I have never seen modems for sale at the electronics stores, only the routers.

So can I buy a router separately?

Also, a related question. The gal I talked with on the Verizon help line who said they would send me a replacement Westell 7500 . . . she had no knowledge about the built in router system for the Westell. i.e. Does it send out a, b, g, or N signals? She didn't even know what those letters meant.

So does anybody know? Does the Westell 7500 send out a, b, g, or N?

I will use one example of a DSL modem that I have seen (You do not have to use this example modem).

I went to http://www.staples.com/ -> Technology -> Networking & Cables -> Modems -> Zoom 5654 X5 Ethernet/USB ADSL 2/2+ Modem.

This example is a modem combo (modem and router all-in-one), and does not have wireless.

Yes, it is workable getting your own modem.

If you want to buy a router separately, you may.

You will need to change the VPI/VCI to 0/35 for Verizon service. Also if you are DHCP you will have to clone the old MAC address or wait for the lease to expire.

Very interesting that 140 plus people looked at my post and no answer to my question as to

what signal the Westell 7500 sends out: a, b, g, or N?

Strange in that all routers on sale at BestBuy, WalMart, etc., brag about being g, or N, or N plus, yet no info on the Westell 7500 signal?????

I even got email from Verizon re this question saying they don't know?????

According to the user's guide/manual, it supports B and G (This is on page 183 of the PDF).

I think you are right about the g.

My info: I was talking to guy at BestBuy and told him of my 'connect' speed of 54mbs.

He said, then you have g.

I said, how do you know.

He said because N connect would be up around 300mbs.

A Verizon line tech guy came to my house regarding my frequent disconnects from DSL and I asked him same question.

He said he knew nothing about what g or N meant. Amazing!!

Also, from the BestBuy guy I learned that my 'connect' of 54mbs meant zilch as far as working on the Internet.

My internet speed is only 1mbs tops for my plan.

The 54mbs or 300mbs for N signal only is relevant if you work within your house in transferring files from one computer to another; if they are on some sort of a hookup.

But aside from higher speed (which means nothing for Internet), the big advantage of N over g is the larger square feet of signal coverage.
