HELP: Having Two Different Internet Speed Connections In One House?

Hello!

So I just moved to DC. I currently live in a grouphouse with one other people.

The grouphouse came with Verizon DSL Internet. My roommate got the cheapest, basic package. He only pays as much $28 which is split even between the other roommates.

Well, you get what you pay for. We have 1 MBPS internet speed which is absolutely abysmal. I can view basic websites like Facebook or Google without many problems; but for streaming video like Youtube, Netflix or Hulu, it's either VERY slow to load (as much as five minutes) or it won't play at all.

Since we are splitting the internet connection bandwidth, we get even less internet connection.

I want to upgrade the internet connection to either FIOs or the Faster High Speed Internet depending on what is available for my location.

However, my roommate is cheap as hell. He doesn't mind spending $30 a day on Dominoes Pizza but a little extra money on Internet is out of the question...

Problem: For reasons unknown, we only have ONE phone jack in the entire house that does Internet.

Thus I wonder if I can MY faster internet connection just for me and have HIS slow as hell internet connection using the same phone jack and modem?

If not, what can I do?

I need faster Internet! 😞

Hmm, tough one.

1st, no you cannot share two connections across one line/jack. You would need seperate lines and jacks.

Now you could have another line brought to the house and have it connected to a new jack in your room. Then you can subscribe to your own internet and he can have his. This would work, assuming that there is faster DSL in your area. If your gonna stream video, you need a minimum of 3Mbs, 5Mbs would be preferable.

Now you may be able to get FIOS, but you would need to confirm with Verizon first that they will not remove the DSL from your roommate. Many times when FIOS is installed, DSL becomes unavailable. You could check with Verizon to see if they will let you do this. this is much more expensive so I would check to make sure that this is what you want before you do it. I think this is the best choice, but then I like and need fios speeds.

#1 This is what I suspect, I really do not know for sure - if this is true.

You can have two DSL modems, as long as they do not have the same phone number.

For example: One DSL modem on 123-456-7890 and the other DSL modem on 123-456-7891.

#2 To get FIOS, they have to put in place Fiber.

#3 I am not sure if you can have FIOS and DSL(faster Internet over phone wire than 53Kbps), but I would think that you can.

You can have different connections from ONE phone jack as far as I know. What I mean by jack is actually the installation of the phone line plug in. Inside you may have been given from 2 to 4 different colored paired wires. I see 3 in mine as I type. With this in consideration, a separate jack may be purchased to be placed above it, using a different colored pair of wires to connect to that jack. This colored pair would be chosen by Verizon. Of course you'd have to check with them, and if it's possible, they'll want to charge you for putting 2 simple little wires on the new jack (lol). I'd avoid it if you're brave enough, and remember I'm not certified, ask Verizon if this is possible first. If it is, a wise man's note... Make sure no one's call gets through when messing with the phone line.. hahahaha...
