Accessing voicemail from home phone?

My husband set up his home phont voicemail more than two years ago and claims we can only retrieve messages by calling from our cell phones. I know this isn't true, and I want to access the voicemail from our home phone. I can't find his original literature, and I'm stumped - every time I try to call our own number from our home phone, I get a recording ("You have called a party on your own line. Please hang up ...").
