Letter from Verizon Services re change in POP3 server settings

Letter was not even addressed to my correct verizon.net address, which made me suspicious. My Outlook POP3 settings haven't had any trouble in many, many years, but this letter said the new incoming setting has changed from incoming.verizon.net to pop.verizon.net as well as a change in the outgoing to smtp.verizon.net.

Is this true? Since I'm a PC tech, I generally leave stuff alone that works well, and in this case, I really am unsure if it's necessary to make changes to email that works fine. I just chatted with an email tech who said it was not necessary for me to make these changes, quite the opposite of what this email from supposedly Verizon Services stated. So, is it necessary? I use Windows Vista and MS Outlook 2007.

I use WIN7 and Windows Live Mail.

Settings are incoming and outgoing, not POP and SMTP.

I just tested it and the connection to Verizon mail is fine.

yes these are legitimate settings.

They are newly advertised on their website.

Currently incoming/pop and outgoing/smtp appear to be valid. Several newer pieces of doc are saying POP and SMTP.

As Verizon has done with the change to SSL by changing the port numbers, Verizon is gradually migrating users to the new servers, pop.verizon.net and smtp.verizon.net. Eventually the old server names will most probably no longer work.

I have found that one advantage to converting to the new server names is that the performance is much, much better.

I use an iPhone and two Apple computers with Apple Mail. None of my Verizon email accounts will work on any of these devices when I change settings as indicated in Verizon's message about POP/SMPT versus incoming/outgoing. Anybody else get them to work on Apple devices?

Note I found one option that doesn't work with the new servers.

From back when the servers were not using SSL, I have had APOP authentication set. The new servers will not accept APOP authentication. Probably not a problem as long as you do use SSL.

I modified the settings and no I cannot Send any mail. I set them back to the original settings and still can't send mail.

I am able to receive but can't send

Any thoughts?

I have at least 5 computers running at any one time, each with several users, several different email clients, 11 or more email addresses, and various email scanners, etc. While it's no doubt inconvenient to change detailed email settings, I decided to make the changes now.
My reasoning is that the SSL provisions add increased encryption and security to my emails and are worth the small price in time. In addition this seems like a "sooner or later" situation and while existing settings work today, I doubt that this will be so in the near future.

Does anyone know if this applies to Verizon's Yahoo mail?

I got the same email letter, but our email settings are "incoming.yahoo.verizon.net" and "outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net".

Nonetheless, I tried changing my settings to "pop.verizon.net" and "smtp.verizon.net", but it didn't allow me to log in using the password I've been using all along. Changed settings back and everything's working again. But I don't know if this will change soon.

I received the email from Verizon 2/28/2013 saying it was important to change the Outlook email settings. The letter is also on their web site, but I received the comment from a verizon technician in online chat today that the settings change is unnecessary. He further was reluctant to help me get the new settings to work. I am left with the feeling that I have been talking to a spammer, not verizon. Has anyone from verizon explained what is going on??

If you log into your verizon account at www.verizon.net and then select the I WANT TO menu and continue by clicking on Check Verizon Announcements, you will see one regarding these changes.

After changing settings per instructions on my IPAD, email no longer worked. Switched back to original settings and working normal again.

I am a Mac person also. Have the same problem that email will not work when changing to pop.verizon.net and smpt.verizon.net. I went back to the original configuration. Verizon's email states:

email application (such as Outlook Express®, MS Outlook, Windows Live Mail or via hand-held devices).
It doesn't specifically mention any Mac Mail app. Except for the "hand-held devices" wording, maybe it doesn't pertain to us?

After changing them on my computer, ipad and ipod touch, I was unable to get ANY mail. I switched back to the old settings as they work...for now.

Verizon's email does not even give you a phone number with a human being (I know, I'm greedy) to troubleshoot if the new settings don't work. Instead, they refer you verizon.com/settings and this forum- to what end??

I pay my bills online and if Verizon wants to get paid they would do well to make it easier for their customers to make the switch. Until that is done, I will stay with the old settings. If they stop working, I will not get my Verizon bills and that's just fine with me.

You look like you're very experienced with Vz, considering the number of your posts. I use Thunderbird, the Mozilla POP3 program. The new settings do not work, nor can I get the old settings to work again. First the outgoing mail quit, now the incoming emails have stopped. I know the prpblem is not TB, because Outlook Express is giving me errors too I use my accounts for business, and webmail doesn't meet my requirements.

I've had to change my settings back to what they had been. What are the precise settings for outgoing? Password type, authentication and original port #.

For some reason, the SMTP will work, but I am forced to use the incoming server instead of the POP with an apple ipad

Verizon really screwed it up. Read through the posts here, and go back to your previous settings.

I use Thunderbird. Haven't changed anything and it's still working fine. I bookmarked the page to the new settings so if they ever become needed for Thunderbird, I will have them. But considering the problems other users have reported with the changes, I'm sticking with the "If it's not broke, don't fix it" philosophy.

While I do not use Thunderbird regularly for my email, yes I do have it, and yes, the new settings work (just verified they do as of about 2 minutes ago). Some people seemingly have problems getting the settings to work, I have no idea why as most don't bother to post their settings that don't work so it is impossible to tell why. But I have been using the new pop/smtp server settings for weeks, not a single failure.

Back then it was for the then-new incoming/outgoing SSL and port definitions. In Jan. 2013 Verizon changed the server names to pop/smtp. Way down in that thread I have documented using the newest settings:

Again, these settings work!

Some people have apparently decided to just wait for a while before changing their settings. That is fine, but I suspect that at some point Verizon will decide to disable the incoming/outgoing names, and when they do their email will just suddenly quit, and they will have to change immediately. I have no idea when this might happen, but my guess would be 3 to 6 months from the original announcement in late Jan. 2013 (only a guess, no inside information or anything).

I hope this helps. If you decide to make the change and have problems, if you will post your settings I suspect someone here can quickly identify where the problem is.

Justin convinced me to go ahead and test it. Changed the setttings in Thunderbird and it still works as before the change.

Any Opera users here? I've not been able to get the new settings to work with the Opera e-mail software and am wondering if its incompatible. Opera uses TLS and not SSL connections. I've read that the difference between TLS and SSL is minor but perhaps Verizon's e-mail protocols are not robust enough to support the TLS?

I recall I also used AUTH CRAM MD5 authentication before Verizon changed their POP3 server settings but I'm not sure what to use now. I tried every version of authentication offered by Opera but it's not working.

Because the Verizon's webmail was not working for my account yesterday either, I ended up making Gmail my primary e-mail account. I had no choice as I was expecting some very important e-mails. I never thought that I would end up choosing a free e-mail account over a paid e-mail account ... but Verizon really dropped the ball. The technical support is awful -- they never have any answers and they always take at least an hour if not longer ... regardless of the question. If the CSRs didn't insist on saying thank you in every other sentence it would probably take half the time. Being polite is nice, but they really overdo it and it doesn't make up for the incompetence.

I, modified the server settings on my computer per the notice from Verizon. However, when making the changes on my iPad, it would not accept the incoming server change to POP. Are these changes really necessary? If I don't make them am I going to have problems down the road?

Cahnged my server settings 3/25/2013 on iMac with MSOutlook. System wrote over previous database and data records (under Main Identity) and I lost everything. Anyone else with this problem? Anyone know what happened?

Because email connects through many routers and mail servers on its way to the recipient, it is inherently vulnerable to both physical and virtual eavesdropping. Current industry standards do not place emphasis on security; information is transferred in plain text, and mail servers regularly conduct unprotected backups of email that passes through. In effect, every email leaves a digital papertrail in its wake that can be easily inspected months or years later.

Every time I get the e-mail I try to change the settings and they never have worked in Outlook or other email programs. The old settings still work so why the change. Haven't they heard the old adage "If it ain't broke don't fix it"
