Extremely slow DSL speeds. Up speed higher than Down speed. Please help.

I just purchased the 1.1 - 3.0Mbps hi-speed DSL package.

Verizon speed test shows .17Mbps down and .536Mbps up. This is obviously curious for two reasons: 1) the incredibly slow down speed, and 2) the down speed being slower than the up speed.

Curiously, speedtest.net shows different results:

2.45Mbps down, .55Mbps up

What could this mean? Transceiver data follows.

OK. It seems as though you're suffering from what some people call "Juniperitus." If you're on a Remote DSLAM that uses Alcatel Litespan equipment (Litespan 2000 for example) along with being connected to a Juniper Networks ERX edge router, there tends to be an incompatibility between the two pieces of equipment that causes TCP connections and pretty much any other form of transfer to see artificial packet loss, which results in transmission. This results in inefficiency in every transfer, so what you're seeing is simply a result of all of this. In the past when Verizon first installed Litespan, they were using older Redback Networks edge routers, which did not create such problems. I'm on a Litespan and happen to still be on a Redback in my area (one of remaining ones still in operation in my area) and I get my max line speed with no issue. It's unfortunate that these actually perform better despite the Junipers being far better edge routers in terms of capacity.

You have a nice running Telephone there, so the physical circuit should not be causing the problem you're having. Are the results you receive consistent with each test, or does the speed vary based on which server you pick? Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) will contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

If I understand correctly, when I run the Verizon speed test, the results always fall within .1 - .25MBps down speed. I've run it nearly a dozen times. I tried selecting other States near mine from the drop-down list, and the results are consistent, or worse.

OK, that's what I was looking for. It looks like you are on a Juniper ERX router. Now we need to see if there's a chance you are on certain equipment on Verizon's end that would not be playing nice with the data.

Download the following file using either your web browser or an FTP Client. Let it run for a few minutes, and you could consider restarting the transfer after a minute to see if it will go any faster.

On the 3Mbps package you should max out around 340-360KB/s. If the results work out as they should with the above download, you should start to see your speed get close to 300KB/s.

Download peaked at 172 kB/s, and averaged about 165 kB/s.

Had good service for over 5 years

Noticed slow down a few months back inconsistent connects, slow page loads (Netflix unable to stream which had been very reliable for over a year), I had attributed it to major line work 2 blocks over and assumed it would improve. Just rechecked my phone number and program said no high speed available at this number.

I am more than a little upset that the system knew I couldn't receive high speed and yet they continued to bill me for it.

The Fedora download is 7 to 9.6 KB/s only 4 days 18 hours remaining.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your issue may or may not be from the Juniper you're connected to, but I guess we'll find out soon enough! Are the speeds you're seeing now consistently shoddy/slow throughout the day, or are they where they should be in the morning and early afternoon hours? What speed package are you supposed to be provisioned for?

I am suppose to get 10-15MPS but every night after 7:00pm I get dial up speed. Now I am to be stupid and believe what they say that it is at my end. Well, how is that even possible? That my computer slows down at that time? Well, I have 5 and only use one at a time as each is for a different function. That would mean that all five computers slow down at those times as we tested them all. Being a computer repair person and tech, I was very surprised that they even would say it is at my end. So, we did another test with 4 different routers 2 nights in a row and got the same slow speeds. Then I am asked about the phones being used, well, they are not being used at all and during the test they are unplugged. I did get Verizon tech to look at this and was told they would have the problem fixed but that did not happen yet. Verizon put a new box on the outside and I had new lines ran inside with only 2 phone jacks in the house as the DSL is on a dedicated line. I am sure someone knows what is happening and it is time I find out what it is. Below are the results of my speed test for tonight:

Most of us are not geeks - we call Verizon, get some nice person who spends time with us, etc. and the result is NOTHING!

Unfortunately we are prisoners of monopolies. I hear the same complaints about Comcast, which is the only option around here.

Can you please check my system results to see if anything can be done? Currently getting 1.6 MBPS on a 3.1-7 MBPS plan with a Westell 7500. I had been getting in the mid 3 mbps for a while, and a tech that came out said that this was the best I was going to get with the wiring in my c.1980 townhouse. But I can't even get that anymore.

I have similar problems. My internet goes to .3 down and .12 up during peek hrs between 8pm and 12am. I should have 7.1 Mbps and get it during the day. It seems Verizon doesn't have the pipeline out of the Central offices to handle the traffic or oversold dsl without having the throughput to support it. All I ever get is they want to get into my computer and delete thing. Does nothing. I am a gamer and am at the point of changing to Zito Media only other option in area. 4G from cell would be great if it wasn't for the cost for over 2Gig data. If Verizon knows there is a problem are they going to take care of it in a timely mannor or do they not care about the rural areas anymore. Maybe people should start calling FCC/PUC on all the troubles. May be the only solution to get this fixed.

Hello, I too am having varing but very slow dsl speeds. I have one of those old westell modems (6100). I am using mac os 10.8.4, and my computer ethernet stats read as: 0-78kbps IN, sometimes it goes to 192kbps out of 18.3gb, 0-17kbps OUT, out of 1.41gb. The ip address you posted before links me to the verizon page and says my modem is connected and is in the green, but the connection is unknown, down/up: 1180kbps/443kbps.
