Motorola 3347-02 DSL Gateway modem set up problems

I recently purchase a Motorola 3347-02-1022 DSL gateway modem with wifi router.

I can not get it to connect to my existing Verizon DSL network. I am currently using a westel 6110 modem and wanted something with wifi.

I have my user name and password for PPPoE

Set the VPI and VCI at 0 and 35 (if I remember correctly)

I am running Windows XP and the network settings are set to auto configure.

I upgraded the firmware from Motorola to the most current which is supposed to work with Verizon and the self check on the modem says that the modem is working fine. I am getting pretty frustrated.

What settings or procedures and I missing or doing incorrectly to connect to my existing DSL account?

Are you positive that your area is using PPPoE? Some Verizon areas (most of which were sold to Frontier) use DHCP over PPPoE, and often times DHCP users need to leave their modem off overnight to make sure they are able to obtain an IP address. Just double check that fact. Otherwise it sounds like you have things set up correctly in terms of the Virtual Circuit settings, so just make sure your PPPoE login is being entered in using the correct case (Uppercase where needed, if you have any).

The only thing I can think of that would prevent the modem from communicating would be the wrong type of encapsulation being used. If the Motorola modem has an option for either VCMUX or LLC as the Encapsulation, I'm positive Verizon is using LLC. If it's set to VCMUX try changing that. From there, just make sure the Motorola modem's status page is showing that it is holding a Public IP address from Verizon.
