Change to FIOS service, port 25 is now blocked.

Outbound traffic on port 25 is now being blocked for residential FIOS service? When I signed up in November I specifically asked and I was told that Verizon does not do any port blocking on FIOS service. I am now in a contract with Verizon and they have changed the service provided and I can no longer use port 25 outbound.

Long story short, if you are sending with an email provider other than Verizon through a pop3 client, then yes (though there are ways to send with 3rd party accounts). If you are only using Verizon's email, then no.

I talked to tech support and they say they did now start blocking port 25. This is a change to the service that I signed up for. They say to get outbound port 25 you have to sign up for their business service which of course costs more.

go back and read the terms of service you signed when you signed up. I dont remember the exact wording but in there it listed that port 25 and 80 could be blocked at any time at the discretion of Verizon. Both have been blocked in many areas for years. Now they are blocking it company wide (as far as 25 is concerned). Port 80 is still up in the air at this point. (both have been blocked in my area since inception.

This really only should affect email client programs, as far as residential customers are concerned. change to port 587 and your good to go.

The idea behind this was to stop spam and to prevent residential customers from running email servers.

Slight problem with 587 - what if your ISP will not allow 587?

I have a web site with Hostmonster and another email with Network Solutions, neither of them will allow 587, the Verizon business upgrade is over $100 a month to get a static address.

So what is the alternative, it may be AT&T or one of the other providers in my area, Verizon will not help - unless you pay an additional premium for a business line.

You don't have to use 587 specifically, just some port other than 25. 587 is the most commonly used "other" port, so it's what Verizon suggests, but you should check with your email provider.

On a side note, AT&T blocks port 25 too. (Most major providers do, Verizon is actually just catching up to industry standard with this one.)
