DSL speed

Last week I "upgraded" from 1.5Mbps to 3Mbps and so far the highest speed I get from the tests is 1.682Mbps over 3 days at various times. So it seems that I am paying more for the same speed as I was regularly getting (up to 1.5+) before. I have a Westell 2200 modem and I am running Vista. Are there other settings that I should change to get higher speeds? Is the 3Mbps a "myth"?

not a myth at all. you should at least be able to get "Close" To the 3.0mb overhead on the net usually prevents you from getting the 100% bandwidth, but you should be able to get 85-100 % of it.

I don't own a 2200 but does anyone know if it gives tranceiver stats? or does he have to call vz tech support to get his DB ratings and bit rate down and interleave fast path business?

we kinda need that to tell if he is getting the most out of the line.

I had slow internet connection speeds with Vista and did a few changes that helped by goggling a few solutions and trying them. In my case I have XP and Vista PC's on my home network and the Vista ones commonly gave poor download performance. Anyway this helped me rule out my DSL line. Hope this helps.

I also have a desktop with XP and I have the same issue on that machine..I made some of the "tweaks" recommended on SpeedGuide on both machines and I still don't see any improvement. Below are the new test results as well as speed test results.

What does this mean exactly? Is the issue on Verizon's side?

Your DSL speed is the lower of either the provisioned speed (3mbps in your case) or the highest speed your DSL modem can successfully negotiate with the Central Office equipment.

So what you really need to do is look at the transceiver information on your Modem/router, and see what speeds it has been able to negotiate with the Central Office Equipment. That speed is sensitive to both distance, and 'quality' of the copper pair that connects you to the Central Office.

Just because Verizon can provision you for 3.0mbps service is no guarantee that the actual copper pair will allow you to actually get to 3.0mbps.

So Verizon will sell you 3.0MBs line but THEY don't test to your equipment to determine if you can meet that standard? I understand some overhead in the line but I assume, shame on me, that if I purchase a line that I would be able to achieve that speed. That should be apart of the initial setup of your device. If they report that as a status on the ActionTec modem but you really not achieving that I have to question the product.

I assume in an eight year old house that the copper wiring would be such to support 3.0MBs?

After I checked the speed on the modem IP page (over 2) I spoke to Tech Support and after a number of tests on their end and having me reset the modem to the factory settings did not improve the speed, they decided to send a tech over. For some reason I'm only getting about half of what I am provisioned for.
I'll let you know what happens after his visit tomorrow.

Well the Verizon tech (who was very good by the way) came and spent about 2 hours checking everything. He verified that I was getting the right speed at the outside box but not at the modem. He checked every phone line to see if they were creating the problem then decided to install a junction box to split the phone lines from the DSL line. He ran a new better DSL line from that box to the modem and that improved the speed to 2.5. He used a different modem to make sure that it wasn't a capacity issue with my modem but got the same 2.5; he concluded that the lower speed was due to a distance issue. I still don't understand why the speed is ok at the outside box but not inside though!!!!

I would be perfectly happy with this for the time being but for some reason I'm only getting between 2 and 2.1 on the desktop and the laptop (sometimes less) and I'm not sure why. I have tried all the "tweaks" I read about but to no avail. So if anyone has any suggestions on what I could do, I would appreciate it.
