Server Port setting -- email says one thing, web site says another

Two recent emails to "Valued Verizon Customer" instruct "to make a simple change to your 'Server Port Number' setting in your email account - change the 'Server Port 25' setting to 'Server Port 587' setting."

However, instructions at http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSInternet/Email/Setup%20And%20Use/QuestionsOne/85543.htm say: "Verify that the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server port number is set to 25."

Questions:

Are the emails to "Valued Verizon Customer" legitimate or spoofs? They look unprofessional and like spoofs.

Which is the correct server port setting? If it's being changed to 587, why isn't that reflected in the online instructions?

#1 If you use Verizon online as your e-mail ISP, then port 25 is the correct post.

#2 If you use another POP3/SMTP e-mail ISP, unless you have a Public Static IP Address, then you have use another port other then port 25.

For example my parents are able to send e-mail via Verizon to AT&T's E-mail Server(s) with 465 for example as directed at http://help.att.net/docs/howto/email/nets/how_oe_w9x-xp_setup-mail-gia.htm?area=customer_email&platform=OSWINXP&faqcounter

#3 If you have another e-mail ISP, but you use your web browser to send and revieve e-mail, then no you do not need to change the port.
