poor smtp server (outgoing.verizon.net) performance

I'm having frequent trouble with verizon's smtp server: outgoing.verizon.net. It's often slow to accept an email for delivery and sometimes just times out. The problems are independent of the email client I use (I've experimented with both Thunderbird and Eudora) and the originating email account, so they really do seem to have to do with the smtp server.

Is anyone else encountering these problems? I've experience them in the past, but it seems like there occuring more consistently. Any advice? (I have the port changed to 587 per Verizon's instructions).

jdwilner, sorry the outgoing server seems slow. Are you still having the same issue?

What anti-virus product are you using? Many anti-virus products have started to include an anti-spam/anti-virus scanning email component to them which hijacks the SMTP connections to the server and passes the data thru the local machine before letting it move on to the actual server. Errors in or problems with this software's configuration can cause the "slow" connection type symptoms.

Check your anti-virus configuration to see if it has an "email scanning" component and temporarily disable it to see if the problem goes away. If you can't find such a component, try just disabling the A/V package altogether for a minute to run a test -- do not run in this mode for a protracted length of time since obviously you are running in an unprotected state. The point is to see if taking the A/V product out of the way removes the slowness issue.
