cant set up and activate my account!

Got my installation pack yesterday, set it up w\ the dsl cable connected to my netbook (windows) and i get nothing. i call tech and they tell me i have to wait till today. ok so i tried and still get nothing. i call back and they say i have to wait for my dsl light to go solid(on the modem model 7500) which could happen anytime before 6pm!!! do i really have to wait around all day for a light before i can activate my account???
