Verizon Classic Webmail Migration to Verizon Message Center

I wanted to take the opportunity to respond to your concerns regarding Verizon Email.

Migration from Classic Webmail to New Message Center

Verizon introduced Verizon Message Center over 12 months ago to Classic Webmail customers by presenting a “Go to New Email Version” link within Classic Webmail. We wanted to give you the opportunity to check it out and become familiar with it before we began migrating customers to it. The customer migration will take place over the course of 2011. Once you have been migrated to Message Center, the Classic View link will be removed. We believe that you will ultimately be much happier with Verizon Message Center.

Verizon Message Center is a more feature rich application than Classic Webmail. It offers the following new features:

Powerful Calendar
1. Easily create and manage calendars for each of your family members
2. Import calendars from friends/family
3. Share your calendar with friends and family
4. Subscribe to popular sports, holiday calendars
Manage all your email accounts within Message Center
1. PoP or import your non-verizon.net email into Message Center
2. Filter and/or manage emails from multiple email accounts in your Message Center inbox
3. Leverage Verizon’s powerful SPAM filters tools, filters and email blocking features to avoid unnecessary email
4. Easily setup email distribution lists to send emails to contact groups
3. Customer can change/adjust all their email settings and never leave Message Center

I understand that Verizon want to get all of the webmail users migrated to the New interface. But you are really, really making some folks mad by not addressing some of the legitimate issues before forcing them to migrate.

For example, what about the issue of not being able to send plain text messages from the New interface? For some people that is critical, there are sites that just will not, under any circumstances, accept HTML format emails. And it appears to me that some of the other usability issues need to be addressed to before anyone else is forced to migrate (and really, you should re-think the no-return to Classic policy for now until you address some of these issues). There have been plenty of comments and complaints made here in the email forum as well as the Ideas area, so I think you and your staff should have a very good idea of what needs to be done, and done soon.

All of that new functionality may be great, but if we cannot do the basic functions we need to do, your New webmail interface with all of those functions is useless to us (actually worse than useless, because it forces users to try to find some other solution, which I think you would agree is bad for them and bad for Verizon).

There was a reason I ignored the requests to change. I previewed the new system and it sucks! Then you nicely asked if I wanted to change and I said no and you changed me anyway! Repeat, the new e-mail interface sucks!

I am very upset that Verizon forces it's customers to migrate to a "new message center". The contacts are very user unfriendly and the format is terrible. There has to be a method in place for a customer to remain on the preferred old format. This will be a customer retention issue. If this format can not be moved back to the old format, I have no choice but to go back to Optimum. Christoph

Lorena, Please take the comments back to your senior management and ask them to have an "option out " feature for those customers who don't like the new format "AT ALL". One example is when you go to forward a message, you now have to go through pages of contacts rather than the abbreviated format before where they would populate a small box which made it very easy to pick out names. Bottom line is the customer today has options to go with the competition if Verizon doesn't act quickly. I'm sure they could give Verizon's customers an option to switch back, It's only software. Remind your senior management team that this is not a monopoly, there are "option out" avenues for customers to go to alternate carriers.

I dislike the new format for may reasons, half my screen is taken up with headers. When I open up an email I can see about 1/3 to 1/2 of it, when I used to see the entire page. I can't delete email a page at a time, the new delete extends to all the emails in the inbox, I may still be working with yesterday's emails and not wish them to be deleted. Now I have to go thru the list one at a time. Please give us the option to have the classic version back.

I view verizon mail using an IPOD touch, and the new format does not display anything. Viewed using a full PC browser everything is fine, but on the IPOD it is 100% unusable.

On the IPOD Everything is hidden behind the toolbars and form headings and I cannot see my mail headers at all. There needs to be some method of explanding the panels.

The classic view worked fine everywhere. I sure would like it back!

you mention reporting bugs here, was told that the email alias feature is not working, with no eta. can you guys fix the email alias feature please?

Like in Classic Webmail, you can simply start typing the name of the recipient you are forwarding the email to in the TO line or select from the your Contacts. You can also filter your contacts by the first letter of the last name.

We rely on the VZ Forum, Customer Feedback emails and issues raised in the customer support centers to drive enhancements/changes to Message Center.

Please also know that we did conduct Alpha and Beta trials and made Message Center available on a trial basis since March 2010.

Thanks for the reply. I highlighted "constructive feedback" because you surely do get a bunch that is not "constructive," such as all of the ones that just say "it sucks" etc. But there have been some very constructive ones that I think really do deserve some attention on your part.

And honestly, would it really cause that big of an issue for Verizon to offer those who want to go back to Classic that option for a while? I still have Classic available to me, as long as you still offer it to some it seems you could offer the option to all while you enhance the New version to address concerns. Just a thought....

I am really fed up with the corporate rhetoric that I am reading being spouted about the "Great new features" of verizons message center. Well, since you say you have the exclusive, perpetual right to use any of my ideas, why dont you consider these. 1)RETURN THE OPTION OF NOT HAVING TO USE THE MESSAGE CENTER.

2)REMOVE THE REQUIREMENT TO HAVE TO UPGRADE FIREFOX TO VIEW EMAIL.(you left me the ability to see how much money i owe you, without the need to upgrade firefox...convenient)

I'm very disappointed that my EMail is attached to my Verizon Residential Account. I much prefer my Email be kept seperate from my Billing and Account information. Isn't there any way to have a different User Name and Password for my Billing Account information???

Only thing I use Webmail for is to check to see if the verizon spam filter has accidentally caught any of my legitimate email.

I use a conventional POP program on my PC for all my email needs and to organize my email.

And services like calanders, address books, etc, I want where I can always get them without counting any a web connection that May not be available as I travel.

I opted out of your voice-mail for my home phone, instead using a conventional phone with an answering system.

Same for me, 100%. I do not want my email on some server in the sky that I may or may not be able to view at any point in time, I want it on my hard drive. Plus I like the ability to customize my POP client (the free Windows Live Mail, before that the free Outlook Express) the way I want it to look and work. But that is just me.....

But there are some people who want to use the web interface for everything, and I think Verizon should make every effort to accomodate them. Some never liked the original Classic interface, some apparently were comfortable with it and hate the forced migration to the New interface, especially if they must use a feature like Plain Text Only for some sites, and some apparently are happy with the New interface. Clearly they all have other options other than using the New interface, but that is one more change, and I think it is sad that Verizon doesn't seem to want to work with them to make it usable for all who want to use a web-based interface.

You can add iPad to that also. I have been able to bring up the keyboard in the message body of compose mail. I can no longer use the full verizon message center site.

This migration to new email webservers has certainly not been a smooth and well thought out transition. I worked on the original ADSL verizon back end systems when there were deployed in 99 and 2000. It seems to me, that just like 10 years ago the initial deployment strategy was a disaster and needed quite bit to tweaking before it became smooth and efficient workflow operation from provisioning to billing. I know that under regulatory constrains since this migration lays under the data side instead of the heavyly regulated voice side of the equation (DLEC vs ILEC) that verizon is not mandated to provide the same customer safeguards and forcing customers to switch to a new system without an opt out option was allowed. From a business perspective and implementation plan view it shows a rather poorly constructed strategy. Email service has become a commodity and since it is used by such a large percentage of customers any migration must be conducted under controlled and high quality testing conditions prior to going to a live enviroment. Verizon and other large ISP providers still have a myriad of consumers using a wide range of OS and webbrowsers for various reasons and obviously backward compatibility must be part of your test cases. We all saw what happened to the microsoft Vista experiment and how they basically had to change with Windows 7 to allow for that backwards compatiblity as many business partners both large and small refuse to adopt that OS for their enterprise operations. Whoever is involved with dealing with the customer side must have access to escalating this issue to upper management VP or C level executive as is affecting both the public image and well as the bottom line on the company. Asking your customers to migrate to a system that assumes you have windows 7 and say internet explorer 8 or above and without proper notification is a MISTAKE from a business as well as a revenue perspective. By looking at my system I see that the iexplorer process becomes a CPU hug as the process is overiding the scheduling of the thread/process priority and thus slowing down the system. Whatever back end system is used either windows asp or java or ajax is really not well optimized to run on older OS and internet browsers. Please have your VP of operations and maybe someone higher look into the ability to bring back the older interface for now until the kinks are worked out. I have several reasons not to upgrade my systems and certainly my isp web server requirements will not force me to upgrade my systems.

First, you no longer have the 'Notes' field in the contacts tab. I have important notes about my contacts which I can no longer see and I can 't add/edit any new Notes for Contacts. it is very important that I have a way to see the old notes which I had this field on the prior version.

Second, I was told to come to this forum to enter my issue, but to sign into this forum, I had to create a forum/screen name and it kept saying any name I entered was already in existence and I finally just clicked on the terms and it processed, but you need to fix it so people don't think that they can't create a unique forum/screen name and give up out of frustration. thanks.

As has already been said in previous posts, this "migration/conversion" from Classic Webmail to the Message Center has not been well planned out. I need to ask a question... When you asked us to try the new interface or stay with the old one, many of us looked at the tour/demo of the new Email and decided to just stay with the old one because we either didn't like, didn't need, or just didn't want the new features. At that time you had an implementation/migration plan that would schedule forced conversion from the Classic Webmail to the Message Center. Question: WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US of the forced conversion schedule then instead of waiting until now ????? I'm trying to be constructive here but the complete lack of consideration or understanding from Verizon for the user conversion requirements is making that very very difficult.

Today I tried to check my email via the web interface and before the email messages are displayed, I am prompted to switch to the new Message Center. There is only one button on the display "Yes I want to go to Message Center to check email" and a note that "....once I choose to switch I will not be able to return to the existing Message Center". I need to be able to reply to emails in text only format so I closed the web page.

Given the issue with the new Message Center of not being able to sent text only emails, why are users being forced to switch to the new Message Center?

How can I opt out when only an "Accept" button is displayed?

I literaly Hate this new Verizon Message Center. I have wasted hours of my precious time time attempting to get around YOUR problems with this system. I cannot send outgoing e-mails to my contacts list because they are marked as spam. Even when I enter the letter / number combinations correctly. This is a very BIG problem. If this is not fixed immediately I will cancel service and go with another provider. I have been a Verizon consumer for years but cannot tolerate this invasion. With all of the problems people are having with this why can we not revert back to the previous version until YOU work the bugs out.

I find ioit most annoying that I now have to either opt-in or perpetually select calssic (each time I try to log in). I checkmy email frequently from work (can't do POP through company servers) and it its a ROYAL PAIN IN THE BUTT now.

Please give us the option to just opt-out of the Message Center and stay wityh what has worked for years. As an engineer my number one credo is "If it's not broken, don't fix it".

EDIT: Just noticed that if I don't change to Message Center in 15 days you will do it for me. UNACCEPTABLE Smiley Mad

And please drop the "FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE" line regarding your making the change for me. It's not and anything done without my approval will ever be convenient. That's just as good as removing TV channels from a tieri and saying it is for an enhanced viewing experience.

You can also add me to the list of generally disgruntled customers who do not like the new message center nor the way it was rolled out and forced upon customers who chose to opt out of it, but I guess that doesn't qualify as a "constructive" comment.

Here is as constructive as I can get. This is a quote from Verizon:

"Once you have been migrated to Message Center, the Classic View link will be removed. We believe that you will ultimately be much happier with Verizon Message Center."

Constructively speaking, the second sentence is extremely inaccurate.

And what high school did the web designer come from? It has got to be the most poorly laid out screen I've ever used. It looks like an amateur designed it. The font is poor and the layout is so small. How do we get rid of the ad bar on the right side? This takes up so much space. I do not want to close it every time I go to see my mail.

OK, you don't like it. But from what I understand, Verizon is not going back. So you have some choices:

1) Accept it, adapt, and use it

2) Continue using Verizon email services but switch to another webmail client. Apparently lots of folks like Gmail, you might look at that.

3) Change to another email provider and use their webmail interface.

4) Use a PC-based email client instead of webmail. I use Windows Live Mail, I like it, others don't. But there are plenty of clients out there, Thunderbird seems popular.

5) There may be other options, maybe someone else will suggest one.

Now, your complaints. Other than the ad on the right side and font size you were not very specific.

1) What browser are you using? If Firefox or Google Chrome, you can install Adblock Plus (free) and use it to block ads (and lots of other useless stuff) on lots of web pages, including Verizon'w webmail page. I do that, had completely forgotten the ads were even there until I unblocked them to see what you were complaining about. There are some ad blockers for IE too I think, I don't have any experience with them, but you can certainly look around.

2) Have you tried setting the font size under Settings? If not, do so, maybe that will help. And assuming you are using Windows, you should be able to increase/decrease the font size in the display using the combination of the Ctrl key and the + key to increase, Ctrl and - key to decrease. In Firefox I have an add-on (QuickPageZoom) that puts a + and - icon on the Status bar, lets me easily increase/decrease the displayed size of any page any time I want - and most of the time it remembers what setting I used so I don't have to redo it all the time.

3) Conversations? Yeah, I agree, rather a stupid choice, but it is what it is, and once you figure out what it means, what difference does it make?

4) Calendar? If you don't need it, don't use it. Seems simple to me....

5) Screen layout? Looks very similar to pretty much every webmail client I have ever looked at. I guess I don't understand this comment, care to be more?

Last but not least, what else don't you like, or you think is missing? Maybe it is there and you just haven't found it yet and someone here can help. If there are specifics that you feel need to be added or changed, I encourage you to visit the Idea Exchange here and tell Verizon what you would like to see fixed and added. Can't hurt, might help.

Verizon seems to have removed the "Go To Classic View" tab if you have been using the new format for any length of time. However, you CAN simulate the function of that missing button and revert to the Classic View (despite what Verizon Customer Support reps might tell you) simply by following these very simple instructions:
Login to your account and go to your inbox view. In the address bar at the top of your screen, type the following EXACTLY as I have typed it here:
http://webmail.verizon.com/signin/VMCOptOut?src=vmc
Click ENTER to the right of the address bar (or press the ENTER key on your keyboard).
(this command basically tells the system that you are Opting Out of the new view)
That's it! Your account should now be reverted back to the Classic View.

Did not work for me. It only changed the backround shade to white in the email listing. I still have only 15 lines of listed emails compared to 22 in the Classic Webmail. The headers and fonts are still from the deplorable Message Center.

Not everyone has access to highspeed internet when reading email. This change for the sake of change sure does slow things down from a dialup prespective. Reminds me of my AOL days on dialup. Also you suggest to use ad blockers. They do block the ads but still take up the space so the viewing area is still crunched on the side. Not always on the same computer or device when reading my email so going to another email client isn't a workaround or viable suggestion. If I wanted Gmail I wouldn't need Verizon. But since I chose Verizon I figured there would be some stability to the form factor and not change the user interface for the sake of change. Why the change to the Message Center? What was wrong with the Classic View. Again, what was wrong with the Classic View. It's not called the Classic View for nothing. Yet your doing away with it. I don't need to hear about change is inevitable. How about makeing Customer Statisfaction inevitable and giving back the Classic View!?

Before I upgraded to the new format I used to be able to switch between my verizon yahoo email account (yahoo.com) and my verizon.net email account - using either a drop-down or the "switch to" option in the header area. After the upgrade I cannot find a way to switch between these two email accounts - please help.

I have been using Classic for 2 or 3 years to check my spam folder and I have never seen a calendar on that page. Yes in the New email, but not on Classic.

I am all for change but if the change does not increase the efficiency, then I have a problem with it. I too would prefere to have an option to revert back to the classic view. The one that stands out for me is that it is too cumbersome to have to delete emails one at a time compared to the old version of checking the "all" delete and only being able to delete the one page of emails at a time instead of flagging "all" the emails for deletion - REALLY?

I can't believe Verizon does this - you get a pop up and it doesn't give you a choice to opt out - so you get stuck with a new message center service that you didn't want- I just want to read my emails and not have to go through all your so called enhancements give me a choice to opt out!!!!

How does it make it more difficult to read your emails? I have had both the old and the new, there really isn't that much difference; yes, it looks a little different, and yes, it is missing some of the capabilities of the classic interface (mostly on sending), but to just read emails, I don't see any downside.

So what do you not like? Maybe there is a setting that will address your issue. If you can provide details of what your issues are, someone here might be able to help.

As to why the change, my guess is that Verizon views the new webmail interface as newer, better, etc, and they don't want the expense of supporting a new and an old version. Supporting multiple versions of software is expensive, so most companies do replace older software with new, and discontinue supporting the old. And in this case, Verizon has probably spent at least a year making this transition, so when I was forced to migrate I was not surprised.

One last thing; if you don't want to go through the "message center" thing, you can always just go directly to webmail:

Just a simple, quick login and you are viewing your email. But yes, once you have been migrated, it will be the "new" webmail interface, not the "classic."

It may work fine for you with both versions, but I can tell you that with an IPOD touch (or IPhone) the new version does not work at all because all of the emails are covered by the tabs and toolbars. You cannot even move these out of the way, shrink or grow them.

When I am on a regular PC brower, no problem. But the Safari Brower on Iphone does not work.

My Name is Unhappy and I basically hate your email upgrade from Verizon Yahoo Classic to the upgrade you offered. I wish I had not pushed the button. Now I can't get back. I tried your live service and they could not help me as well. I follow instructions and nothing works. I wish I could bill you for my time .....Very unhappy. Please fix it.

This sucks too on a Blackberry - a VERIZSCAM Blackberry no less - I may get the site, I may not - when I do - the mail is not visible - yes I know I can have it delivered to my blackberry - but I need to get to older messages that I had inadvertantly deleted off my blackberry.....before someone flames me.......

My main problem with the new Message Center concerns the importing of other POP mail. I assume that when ALL is selected, it should be importing the mail from all my other POP accounts (which are correctly configured) automatically, or at least when I click on the refresh mail button, in to this interface. This, however, is not happening, and I need to manually select and refresh each individual POP account to import my mail. With the original Netmail basic interface, while it was not automatic, there was an option to simply 'Check POP Mail', which would import all new mail from all configured POP accounts (with one click). I have four other POP accounts set up to import, and checking each of these individually gets very tedious very fast.

I agree with the vast majority of posetrs here - the new Message Center is HORRIBLE. I could live with it except for the fact that previously useful functionality has been removed.

For example, I don't like to issue my verizon email address in the From field. I have my own domain name, and if an email is addressed to me at that domain it is automatically forwarded to my verizon account. This isn't a problem when working from home using Thunderbird, as Thunderbird puts whatever email address I have specified in the From field, whether I am composing a new email or replying. However, when working at a client site, if I use a Web browser to access my email, even though I have the desired email address in the ReplyTo field, Webmail still puts my verizon address in the From field. I found a work-around though. I Reply to an email, replacing the intended recipient's emaill address with my ReplyTo address, and when it shows up in my Inbox, I move it to Drafts and edit as new, putting the address it is really meant for into the To field. The From field now has my ReplyTo address, as desired. Yes, a couple of extra steps but it worked.

However, with the new Webmail, apparently I no longer have the option of moving an email from Inbox to Drafts! I just got off a chat session with Support, in which I was told that moving an email from Inbox to Drafts is no longer possible. In addition, I was told there is no way for Support to bring this issue to the attention of Engineering!

So I have 2 questions:

1) Does Verizon hire only complete and utter **bleep** who make decisions to remove simple, useful functionality?

2) What kind of dysfunctional corporate structure prevents Customer Support from reporting customer complaints and issues? Does their role consist entirely of just reading the words "I'm sorry. There is nothing I can do." from a script?

Thanks for the company brochure, but how about real answers. This is like the virtual assistant is there to help, if you have the right question. I guess I need to create a yahoo account and start using that for email that works for the people instead of a company.

My only problem with the new Verizon email is in the middle of an email I'm composing I lose the email and get a message that the page I'm on has expired. I lose all information in the email that hasn't been saved to draft. So I must constantly click on save to draft as the auto save to draft is not done that frequently. I have seen on the Email Forum page many complaints but we get the answer you can only be writing an email or on the email page so long or you will be taken off--one employee said for security reasons. Well who in the world is going to break into my house to tamper with my email page. That doesn't make sense and besides this is only a recent occurrence--that is where you are constantly bumped off the page. I also get the message after being bumped off the page that the tab has been recovered,but it doesn't recover the words I've been typing in the email i was writing. It just takes me back to the sign in page. Another person was told by someone on the forum to type their email on Microsoft Works and cut and paste and copy it to the Verizon email compose page. They've got to be kidding!!!! This morning after typing a long email with many names and addresses and losing the email many times and having to start over, I finally went to my gmail account and typed the exact same email and was never bumped off, and I never lost any part of the email. So don't say it's my computer. From now on I will write my emails using gmail.

Same complaints as Holly. I keep getting the boot when trying to compose an email. It doesn;t seem to like the ENTER key to skip to a new line.

Since when is "reply" an "other action". Why is it gone from the normal line of options like DELETE?

Also, getting complaints when I send emails - although my default is 16pt - that the text is teeny tiny which I see when someone replies to one of my emails.

I was using a link to Classic email for a while, but it doesn't work anymore. Is ANYONE monitoring these complaints? I want the Classic back. PPPPLLLLLEEEEEEEEAAAAAASSSSEEE!!!!

The greatest irony is that, after composing a reply in another thread, I'd started browsing through the Verizon e-mail forum and found this thread -- and then, AS I WAS READING THE LINE ABOVE, my screen changed all by itself and I was taken to a page that said:

"Your Session has timed out.

You have been automatically signed out due to inactivity. Please sign in again."

I was taken out of the forum completely and had to wend my way back to the right place, let alone having to sign in again in order to compose this reply.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!

For security reasons, I don't check the "keep me signed in for 2 weeks," but now I'll have to think about it harder. Verizon, you can sign people out automatically if you want, but why boot them out of the forum entirely? You can notify us, but at least have the courtesy of sending usback to the page we were on.

BTW, doesn't browsing through the forum and clicking on links to threads count as "activity"?

I want the Classic Webmail back to for the reasons enumerated by previous posters. The new WebMail is buggy and the Filters in the Mail Settings section just doesn't work. Verizon, stop the nonsense and give us a choice of using the Classic Webmail. Those customers of yours who want to put up with the totally inadequate new version of webmail would still be free to do so.

I was changed over to the new Webmail unwillingly.

Now I can not find my contact list.

I can not add to or delete contacts.

It used to be right there on my Webmail page, so easy to get to.

The new Message Center does not work on certain devices. From some of the other posts in the community, this list seems to include the Kindle Fire, the iPad, and perhaps some other Android devices. Is it too much to ask to able to swtich back to the Message Center for those effected while the main problem is resolved? Smiley Sad

I liked the New message center, but after the recent E mail problem (signing in to E mail) I am back on the old E mail. Will the Message center ever come back?

Yes its coming back. But they clearly had more than just signon problems with the recent changes to TLS/SSL. So its taking a bit longer for Verizon to fix it.

After reading all these post, I really believe that Verizon should keep the classic E mail. It seems to be the one most,if not all, customers want. Sometimes simple is best, and, when you try to add all the bells and whistles, you crreate problems.

Since Verizon haas surely had enough time to correct the problems, they need to either stick with the Classic E mail or pay enough to get programmers who can fix it.

I agree completely. The interface is is fat and bloated, slow to load, slow to respond. I think the same people that did VIOS did this client. Has anyone tried to delete muitlple messages? You can only do two at a time! I'd like to delete the entire interface.

I agree with the girl who wrote the complaint abour your "forcing" improvements for which many people are not ready. Your old system was not exactly perfected. I am trying to speak for the millions of elderly people who want to use email to send and receive "simple" messages, and get lost in the jungle of complexities. I had a simple specific question. Why was there no scroll column on my email? Couldn't get a "specific" answer. Pathetic.

I do not like this new format at all. It is confusing. Why should I have to sign in everytime I want to send an email? This format is the worse format. I want the old one back and for Verizon to force this on their customers should be illegal.
