Deleted email is kept ib trash for 2 days. Can that be extended?

No. I would suggest creating a separate folder for message that you aren't sure you want to have deleted permanently.
This just started this year, 2016. They used to stay in the deleted folder until I deleted them. Is this a new policy by Verizon?

It takes them longer to delete the spam folder.
