Fellow FIOS people, is there any news on whether Verizon is going to add Al Jezeera? How do we avoid this awful channel? Time Warner has already stepped up. Have you heard anything re Verizon? I can't get an answer from the company.
Please don't comment on something you know nothing about. If you had ever watched Al-Jazeera, you would realize that it is hands down the best network in the world when it comes to covering international news. Don't believe what you hear on Fox News. Al-Jazeera is not the media wing of Al Qaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood, or any sort of terrorist network that simple minds say they are. They are just a group of brilliant news people that do on a consistent basis what Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, etc. could not do on their best day - provide unbiased coverage of breaking news and in-depth stories on topics that matter 24/7.
But, hey, DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT. Watch for yourself and make your own decision. Go to their site or thru their YouTube channel and tune in for 15 minutes. Knowledge is a dangerous thing.
You're getting Al-Jazeera, whether you like it or not. They just bought Current-TV (which FIOS already carries).
If you don't like it, don't watch. Just please don't advocate to get rid of it so no one else can watch. It sounds like TWC wanted to get rid of Current anyway, and the change of ownership gave them a legal right to terminate the contract.
Yeah, this topic has a high probability of bringing out the xenophobes. I've watched AJAmerica, and found them bending over backwards to be non-partisan. They remind me of the Christian Science Monitor, an excellent newspaper that refused to go along with the media trend of hype and alignment to either of two political views. While they saw their job as simply reporting the facts, too many people really wanted a news "viewpoint". So be it, It's their business to run as they see fit, just don't present entertainment, and call it news. And this is not a criticism of the poster, just a criticism of the "News" media as it exists today. Just another step in the cartoonization of America.
Check channel 457 at least it shows in my zipcode and has been for a while. Are you talking about a different channel?

I agree with thetheory's post. Whether Al Jezeera, BBC, or some other channel anyone wanting to be informed on world affairs need to be exposed to world media. Foreign does not mean false.
All governements and media have an agenda and practice some form of propaganda to get their message across. It is important to distinguish between what some one believes and what someone says they believe. That is accomplished by listening to both sides, not just one. In other words: use multiple sources for your news.
If you have CurrentTV then you are getting Al Jezeera.
Don't want it or like it? Go to SETTINGS - FAVORITE CHANNELS, and delete it.
I do have a choice whether to watch Al Jezeera or not. I also have a choice of cable companies too. Brighthouse is refusing to air Current. My contract is up with Verizon and if they don't announce soon to drop Current, I will be going back to Brighthouse. What is really scarry is x vice president sold it to Al Jezeera because they share his values...I didn't know he hated America.
Should ABC, Disney (Jr.), and all the ESPNs all be banned because the parent company Disney was a partial owner of Viewers Choice, which finances several adult entertainment films?
If you don't like it don't watch it. By the way as stated above in the NYC market Al Jezeera is a secoundary channel from the RNN local channel. Verizon carries it on channel 481

I'm hopeful that the numbers of viewers (that there are very few) will lead you to remove this station. Everyone has the right to air their opinion, but in this particular case, Al-Jazeera has been openly supportive of terrorist organizations. It remains to be seen what changes they will make to Current but if Verizon is looking to keep channels that viewers actually watch I think this will disappear due to lack of viewership.

Are you kidding me? I can't stand fox news, but I wouldn't try to get my TV provider to remove it from my package - I simply won't watch it.
I also hate fox news and simply removed it as a channel i receive on my tivo,so it never shows up in my guide or goes to fox when i scroll through my channels,for example when i'm changing channels and i'm on channel 617 my tivo will automaticaly bypass channel 618 (fox news) and go to the next number 619 weather channel,YOU can do that with any channel you dont want on tivo,but i dont know if the verizon fios box canalso do this since i dont have one.

Which is why I watch the BBC when I want to get the world news. I don't have to listen to the illiterate biased talking heads on MSNBC and Fox News.
If you think the channel is awful, don't watch it. Set your parental controls. I think The Blaze is detestable. I don't want it on my FiOS, but if they add The Blaze I will not watch it unless I want to make an up-to-date list of its misinformation. What if Verizon compromised and added both The Blaze and Al Jazeera America? You can go into parental controls and block the channel you don't like and I can do the same with The Blaze (and I'm a Nielsen family).

Anyway, if you do not wish to be exposed to Al Jazeera's content, I suggest you to use parental controls. If you do not have a Parental Controls PIN, you will need to create it.
To lock or unlock all channels: Select Lock All or Unlock All and press OK. To lock or unlock specific channels: Select Block by Channel > Add or Remove Channels. From there you can select to Lock All, Unlock All, or select specific channel(s) that you’d like to lock or unlock

This new channel is based out of NYC and will have coverage tailored for the American audience. Right now they're airing a special on the channel interviewing a lot of the staff and the vast majority of them aren't even arab.

I find it hilarious that the same people crying about how unAmerican Al-Jazeera is are the same people crying about Verizon not carrying BlazeTV (which isn't even a real network - its a subscription based website for Glenn Beck's army of {please keep your posts courteous}).
It's about time Verizon gives those of us with an IQ over 70 an actual channel to watch REAL news. Al-Jazeera America is far superior to ALL the American corporate owned crap media, that do nothing but spew a partisan perspective or the celebrity trial of the week.

It's here! Al Jazeera AImerica needs to be removed from FIOS TV asap. Verizon hosting this Islamic propaganda channel is absolutely shameful. I don't want it blocked - I want it gone. If Fios won't drop it I am going to seek alternatives.

Unfortuantely, that isn't the case. TWC which is the second largest cable company does not carry the channel. U-Verse also does not carry the channel. So there are alternatives to people that are serious about jumping ship. I'd avoid U-Verse though, their picture quality is notoriously bad.

They have to give the channel some time to gain viewers before they decide to axe it due to low viewership. Funimation Channel was on FiOS for a few years before it was removed due to very low viewership.
Please remove Aljazeer TV from the lineup. Couldn't get that channel when it was Current TV. This is even worse. Plenty more stations I would rather get if you actually want to ADD something to the line up. Do you hate this country so much that you want to force feed the propaganda that station is selling. I chose Verizon FIOS over Time Warner ONLY because Verizon airs Al Jazeera America. For those who don't know anything about the channel (including how to spell it), please don't ask the company to remove the channel. If you're not interested in the channel, then don't watch it. However, as an educated person who cares about the quality of TV news, I think this country desperately needs a channel devoted to real news, not screaming talking heads.

This is not a matter of closed-minded prejudice. There's a reason why some many countries want these people shut down. They are a propaganda machine for the Qatar government. They are sympathetic to enemies of freedom and secular government. I don't say that they should be completely banned, but I feel very strongly that I should not have to support them with my subscription dollars. It's not like paying for the shopping channels or foreign language networks which are also part of the bundle because HSN ....(as far as I know, anyway)...is not set on the destruction of western freedoms.
In our area it is a subscription channel, as it should be.

Incorrect. I have the Extreme package and I have Al Jazeera on 114 and 614, watch the HD channel at least some on most nights that I am home, have it in my Favorites, overall a pretty good news channel I think.

Can you clarify what's "anti-American/anti-western/anti-human" about Al Jazeera? Looking at their site, it pretty much just looks like news.
It does seem like there are many channels and even duplicate channels in the packages that I would not choose to have.
However, upon further investigation, you will find that Al Jazeera America is an American news channel not:
'anti-American/anti-western/anti-human dreck.' In fact, if anyone were to watch it, they would conclude that for themselves. More like BBC World News than CNN Fox or MSNBC. I'm actually glad to have more competition in the news broadcast market.
And with Verizon's pro business and right to work aggressive stance in the marketplace, I sincerely doubt any 'pollitically correct' agenda.
A lot of things look like news, e.g., Pravda and Der Stürmer.
Start with the fact that Al Jazeera is owned by the government of Qatar. You can't even say that about CNN.
You can be fed small doses of poison without noticing. Then you're dead.

This is an online media channel that looks like they have a lot of videos.
We all have different tastes.
Some will like Al Jazeera. Some will hate it.Same is true for Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc.
A lot of people would only like to pay for channels they watch and not others.
Maybe one day that will come.
Until then, you have to pay for channels you don't like and so do I.
