Channel Guide - lacking content

Why does the Channel guide seem to be pretty lame? We've had Fios TV for about 2 months and I have to admit the information provided in the channel guide is not always accurate or simply lacks.

We switched from DirecTV and 99% of the time it was accurate and complete. One thing that I miss terribly is the year of the show. My wife and I enjoy watching HGTV and Foodtv. When using DirecTV it would always display the year the show was made and we would decided to either watch it or something else if it was old. Now with Fios the year is hardly ever displayed (very inconsistent) and we have to watch the show a few minutes to decide if we saw that episode.

Wanna talk about a high-tech TV system with low-tech attributes. I hope someone at Verizon reads this and responses or takes this to the company suggestion box.

I agree completely.

Not only does it give next to no information it says that shows that are 20 years old are new.

What I want to see is the year the show aired along with the series #, I want it to state when it is the season finally and series finally. I also want to be able to see if it is a new show right off of the guide without having to push the info button. These are not impossible requests Dish network does it and if they can do it so can verizon. I know for me if they can not figure this out soon I will switch to a company that can.

I completely agree. It is for this reason, and the lame Reminders, that I will be going back to DirectTV when my contract with FIOS is up.

I’ve got to agree as well. FiOS is superior to Comcast in so many ways but one area they definitely lag behind is the horrible quality of the information presented in on-screen channel guide. Not only is the content lacking, one of my biggest beefs is just how INACCURATE the program listings seem to be. I get annoyed when I see something on the guide I want to watch but when I click on it an entirely different program is on. I’ve been a subscriber for a year now and this problem has been present since day one. When you rely on these ridiculously erroneous listings to program the DVR it really gets frustrating.

I do love my FiOS, I just wish they would do something about the Channel Guide. As jumpin68ny said “talk about a high-tech TV system with low-tech attributes. I hope someone at Verizon reads this and responds or takes this to the company suggestion box “

The Fios TV guide is horrible. The picture is great but if you can not find the program you will never see it. Comcast had a much better guide. And Comcast was not great so that tells you where Fios is. Here is what Comcast had and what Fios needs:

1. A good movie menu that shows all the movies that are on for a particular time. In alphabetical order would work.

2. The names of the actors in the movie, along with directors and date of release in the description section.

3. Good movie description that does not require multiple selections drill down so that you can read it.

4. A four STAR rating for all movies.

5. A selection that shows all the future viewing times the show will be presented.

6. Favorites - should be able to add a favorite any time from the channel you are watching.

7. Search - search is useless the way it is. - Look at Comcast for a pretty good search. I could search on Sports- Baseball- and see all the games that are currently showing with the channels - low def and hi def on the same page.

8. Accurate information. The shows are not what the guide always states.

In fact even this forum software is terrible as well. The spell checker is lame.

You can do that. While watching a channel, if you want to add it to either of your Favorites lists, just hit the Options button on the remote and select either Favorites 1 or Favorites 2. You can easily remove a channel from a Favorites list the same way.

I see that option. Maybe you are looking for it in a different way. I just switched to FiOS from Cablevision, and the FiOS guide is far superior to what CV has. The only thing I haven't found is a way to easily skip to a future day without scrolling through the entire time. CV had that (of course then it would hang your TV while it downloaded that info, or even the program info if it did not have the detail!).

What I would really like to see is the New/Repeat indicator on the main guide screen, and have it be accurate. CV showed it but only in the detail. It was generally accurate. It has to be a bug in the Verizon box code because that indicator should be readily available and correct.

You can easily skip a day forward or backward. When viewing the Guide (full or mini) just hit the Skip Forward key on the remote (the oval key to the right of the DVR button) to go to the next day, and the Skip Backward Key (the oval key to the left of the DVR key) to go back a day (but you can't go back to a day earlier than the current day). Just keep hitting the appropriate key to skip to the next day.

I agree, it would be nice if it were on the main guide screen, there certainly appears to be plenty of room on the bottom line to include that indicator. The info is available, but you have to hit the Info button to see it. And, and this the worst part, it is almost never correct, so at least for now, there would really be little benefit to having it visible on the main page. Apparently the Guide data provider, FYI Television, can't supply accurate information about whether an episode is new or a repeat. I keep hoping Verizon will finally give FYI the boot and get a guide data provider that can provide accurate data, but we have been waiting for this for a very long time......

The channel guide is awful as well as the movies Verizon provides on the movie package I purchased. The movies are from the last century and beyond with maybe one or two in 2000. Also, the free on demand movies I have with the package is a very limited selection. When I select a channel to watch a program/movie from the guide and you get a totally different program/movie. I really feel I am in cyber space with FIOS TV. Comcast provided excellent programs and updated movies that were added all the time. I will not renew my Verizon Fios contract when it ends as I am very disappointed. It is terrible and why can't they do something about the terrible channel guide.

Well, just call me Pollyanna. The good thing is that the guide is MUCH better than it used to be. At least they are making progress. They have a long way to go but at least progress is being made.

As for the content on the movie packages. Verizon doesnt control the content on the channels. The Subscription VOD only contains the movies sent to verizon from the channel provider. (I'm talking about the subscription sections...IE HBO, Showtime, etc. Not the Verizon VOD area)

If your only gripes with the service is the guide and the amount of free HD content, then to me that's slim pickings in the big picture of what you need to look for in a cable provider.

If you are used to getting X and are now getting Y it can be a big gripe. For me coming from DirecTV the channel guide was 99% spot on. There were no on-demand so its sorta a wash but the channel guide errors or lack of contact is a serious flaw, for me more than VOD content.

Our FIOS was installed over this past weekend. The channel guide is making my husband crazy.(he said if he had known it was like this it woulda been a deal breaker) We totally agree with all the issues broadws has addressed. Especially the search. My husband is used to looking at the guide in the morning and doing a sports search by catagory (baseball, motor sports, tennis, etc) then he would get a list of what was showing and at what time for each. Then he could schedule his day around what he wanted to watch. You cant do this at all with this FIOS Guide. I sat down and tried to search a few things to see if it was just him, but there is no EASY way to search anything. You end up looking thru hundreds of things (some which have nothing at all to do with your original search) They have got to do a better job breaking down the subcatatorys. Ohhh and why arn't repeat games marked as such? I did a search for a mets game today & went "Hey hun I found you one" he starts laughing & says ya its showing now but its a repeat from last night. You have to scroll down another 50 or so items to find the games that are on tonight. This is very confusing & time consuming. Someone from the FIOS developement team needs to sit down & take a look at Comcasts Guide and maybe a few others that have been around a while already and get a better handle on what works for a TV guide.

The worst aspect is for the HD channels. Every program that is not in HD is always listed as being in HD! REALLY bad info!

yes it is true that the content is pathetic at best (I watched Leatherheads the other night, and when I clicked the "info" button, to the list of stars, they listed George Clooney twice - he must have been that important).

anyhow, ya'll have to realize that there are pros and cons to each cable provider, and you have to determine which ones are most important to you.

True. However, even the most basic of channel guides would include the things we're looking for. In my case, that would include increasing the capabilities in Reminders to do cyclical Reminders (daily, weekly, etc.).

as that would be a nice feature, it's meaningless to me b/c I try not let my life revolve around tv (not that I'm implicating that you do, I'm just saying in general). however, my wife sets up her reminders on her outlook e-mail program (or you could set one upon your phone).

IC - I'd rather have it built in to FIOS, thus allowing it to automatically remind us that one of our favorite shows is on,instead of having to resort to external means of reminding us.

I have to totally agree with these comments. I switched from directv and have had FIOS for about a month. I find the entire process labor intensive, especially when it comes to the DVR. With directv, once you added something to your dvr as a season pass, you could go to that listing and pull up a schedule of all the upcoming shows with titles and full descriptions. With FIOS I either have to go find the show in the guide or go to the menu search function.

Also, with the DVR, if you go to your shows that are scheduled to record, you don't get titles, only a brief description...you either have to go back to the guide or to the search function for more information. However, once they have recorded, then there is all the information you want...that same information should be on both choices, the scheduled to record and recorded.

As someone else stated, the search function is highly lacking. When I input letters of what I'm looking for, it doesn't "drill down" as it should, it just brings up more choices with the letters all over the place...and then I have to go deeper and deeper to find all the upcoming shows and then guess if they are new. It is very frustratng to see shows that I know are not NEW yet they are listed as NEW. For instance, JAG on Sleuth, it's been off the air for many years yet the program information lists ALL the episodes as NEW. Maybe if you've been asleep for the past 10 years! And who writes those descriptions....

Another thing I miss is being able to save searches. I look for some of the same things often and each time, I have to input the same information.

The last thing I really dislike is the highlighted large info on the one channel on the guide. I personaly would rather have more information for each channel that is listed within the space (or more channels per screen) rather than one highlighted...and why can't there be more time than 90 minutes. You should have the option of setting it; if you have an older or smaller tv, then yeah, 90 minutes makes sense, but with my widescreen, at least 3 hours could fit.
