I have just found out that FIOS plans to drop WJAR Ch. 10 in RI and near by MA. If you do this Verizon I will go back to COX Cable. This is not a threat but an honest warning.
channel 10 goes i go to cox
Simple, Drop WJAR our source for local news and weather and a host of other programs and we drop Verizon. I too will switch to COX
I will go back to COX if WJAR is dropped
I won't go to Cox. I'll simply pick up the station over the air in HD. What bothers me is that other than a notice on WJAR's broadcast, I haven't heard anything from Verizon.
Apparently things like this aren't important enough to involve the subscribers. It would be nice if Verizon would send a notice out. Is NBC going to be covered by another broadcaster or do we lose it all together?
With all the money I send to Verizon each month, I expect better than this. SHAME ON YOU VERIZON.
If Verizon drops channel 10 is this not a breach of contract since when we first subscribed to Verizon we were informed that local stations are part of the package.
If Verizon cancels channel 10, RI residents will simply go back to Cox.
The choice is yours, Verizon.
The ball is in your court.
I agree with the sentiments here. 1) I would consider the loss of NBC to be a breach of contract and will feel no obligation to stay with Fios or pay my next bill for that matter. 2) I find the lack of information coming from Verizon inexcusable, this isn't like losing the OWN network, and 3) even if they get another NBC station, I still think that customers should be compensated for the loss of a major local station. Regardless, I will seriously consider going back to Cox if this happens, mostly because it's been handled terribly. Also, Cox customer service is far superior!!
o if Verizon drops WJAR so that must mean we can sue Verizon for breach of contract!!!!!. i don't know about some of you but i agreed to a 2 year contract with them and if they are not providing a service that is bound by my contract... well my choice is clear i will seek legal
action for breech of contract.
FIOS provides great options. But if Verizon drops WJAR this will be an absolutely horrible decision. WJAR is our local station for all news, weather, etc. It is ridiculous to think that we as customers would not want our own local broadcast station. Please reconside this decision. WJAR should remain on our FIOS choices.
I have been with Verizon for some time now but unfortunately will be forced to look for a new provider if they do go forward with this. My tv is tuned to channel 10 more then any other . I hope that they reconsider and not go through with this...
We, as well as all these other customers will go back to Cox also..Channel 10, is about 85-90% of our viewing during the day and at night..We love this station!!!!!
Drop them! WJAR just plain sucks!! Drop Channel 10 and give us Channel 7 in MA in its place.
I wouldn't mind getting a Boston station, but doubt that will happen.
We will also switch to Cox if WJAR is not renewed. It is a big part of our local community and is highly watched.
the switch back to cox would be a easy and breezy switch if wjar is dropped. i really don't see the difference between the 2 anyway. the internet is just as fast as cox and the picture is the same. hell they use the same exact box. and you ever notice you may have fios on the street but the cable to the set top box is a coxial cable. if it was a real fiber optic setup it would go right to the set top box
I suppose it depends on your setup, but hd and sd picture quality is miles better on Fios, more noticeable the bigger the screen you have. If you dont see a difference over Cox in that aspect, something is wrong. Directv and dish is more competitive with Fios, but the pq is still inferior. On both cox and fios, you can buy a tivo, which is the best dvr on the market, although many people like Dish networks too.
While they may use the same type of cabling going into homes, the fiber optic network extends well beyond that.
Cox internet was quite good in my area I have to admit, consistently getting speeds at or above the plan level, but upload speeds are better on fios' network.
I agree with everyone Don't Drop channel 10. Get rid of some of the muti language channels If you do drop I will go back to Cox. To bad because you guys just got into RI and I thought you pretty successful. Don't Drop !!!!!!!!!!
Please take a look at my post here about most of the facts that are available: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-TV-Programming/FIOS-dropping-WJAR-TV-as-of-12-31-11/m-p/385431#M12535
What is to stop WJAR/Media General from doing this to Cox when their contract is up.
Cayria,
Cox is a locally established company. Their corporate offices for their northeast footprint is right in West Warwick, RI. They have a local presence and local connection with their audience in the region so they know the meaning of what it's like to have a connection with a local broadcaster. Verizon lacks that small region connectivity to it's audience. To them, Rhode Island and SE Mass are just "markets" and they probably would have a hard time pointing out where places like Warwick, Woonsocket, Fall River, and Somerset are on a map. It's companies like this that make smart decisions for their audience, as Cox has done with their recent retrans contract negotiations.
Cox gave me $200 to switch back to them (automatically applied to my bill, no silly rebate forms and 12-16 months of fighting) and waived any install fees.

Glad that Cox held up their end of the bargin with you. I could not get stable service or promises through them. My post is ment to show what information is out there and to put to rest the nonsense that everyone else is throwing out there.
Cox does not have a corporate office in Warwick, it is a business office. Just like Verizon has a business office in Providence. As far as having connections with broadcasters, it means nothing when the broadcasters want to hike their fees for rebroadcasting. Time Warner Cable is in the same boat as Verizon with NBC affiliate Stations. In the case of Time Warner Cable the broadcaster wants to up their charges by 400% (and have been blackout since Dec 12). I will bet that this will even happen with Cox, it is just a matter of time. To state facts about local broadcasting connections, Cox had an retransmission dispute with an Atlanta based broadcaster (WFNA - Lin Media) which is in the same town as their corporate office back in March 2011. I am sure if I look, I could find about half a dozen, if not more, per cable provider in any year. (Quick search for other stations Cox has had disputes with this year: WPGA, WTNH - New Haven, CT, WVFB - Virgina) Some of them are from the same broadcaster that is reached to multiple markets.
The rate that these disputes are occuring is becoming an epidemic.
First Verizon Wireless wants to charge me to pay them on their website and now they want to take NBC away. Anyone have the number to Cox?
If you didn't hear, they signed a new agreement
