If I get home internet, can I put the account on hold while away for an extended vacation?
Yes you can. Just call Verizon, speak to Billing, and ask for a vacation suspend. There may be some small charges each month for things like 911 service (which Verizon does not turn off) and general line maintenance changes which may occur.
