Suggest that you Call 1 800 VERIZON and work with them
Actually you can just keep it. They no longer close email accounts unless they have had someone not check mail for more than 6 months. In fact its almost impossible to get it closed (I've tried for one of my accounts) when you terminate your service. The service mentioned in the thread pointed to above is no longer offered.
