Deleted text messages

My phone is deleting text messages without a prompt to do so. I have lost conversations from two contacts that was not intended.

Can I restore the messages?

How can I prevent this from happening again?

I have gone to the restore messages prompt on my phone and it only shows messages saved to the SD card, which is only one. There is not an option to retrieve messages online.

I have also downloaded FonePaw without success.
