Does an incoming call on Wi-Fi calling with airplane mode on trigger travel pass?

I am currently in Mexico and I have my phone on airplane mode, and I assumed that that would prevent the travel pass from getting triggered. My son, who also has an iPhone called me, and I assumed it was a FaceTime call because my phone was on airplane mode and only connected to Wifi, but when I picked up, I just got charged the $5 for the day and I am confused how that could happen.

Hmm, that is odd, I say this because, if someone tries to call you while your phone is in airplane mode, the caller will hear a message saying that your phone is unavailable or out of service. The call will not go through, but the caller will be able to leave a voicemail. Have you checked your device to ensure you are on Airplane Mode?
