Gain Internet access through a device connected to Verizon ONT

I have hi-speed Internet access via Verizon Fios using Verizon coax router Fios-G1100. Everything works well. Now I want to connect a new wi-fi enabled HVAC heat pump system through its "RedLINK" (Honeywell) Internet Gateway device. As installed (professionally), this device plugs directly into the Verizon Optical Network Terminal (ONT) via a short Ethernet cable. There's only one Ethernet port on the ONT. The Gateway was properly activated from the thermostat. However, this action failed to connect it to the Internet, so I can't register it with Honeywell and gain access to the online features. I cannot figure out how to give it online access, which would normally be done through the router. I can see all the devices known to the router, both wired and wireless; and this gateway device isn't there. Can the router recognize a device that is plugged directly into the ONT? How do I get it online?

The Honeywell Gateway should be hung off of your Verizon Fios router, or whatever you normally use to provide Wi-Fi to your devices. If the Honeywell is being directly connected to the ONT, it is either receiving the entire Internet connection (in which case nothing else should work in the house besides RedLINK devices) or, it's receiving nothing (because your main router is getting Internet via Coax?).

Basically... if you have one and only one device to connect to the Internet, it can be connected directly to the ONT. But make sure you've got a Firewall! Otherwise, only a router should be connected to the ONT to obtain Internet.
