People can't hear me on calls

People are having trouble hearing me on calls. The call isn't dropped and I usually have at least 2-3 bars of service. I can usually hear who I'm calling, but they can't hear me. Also, it doesn't matter whether it's an inbound or outbound call. It's also intermittent - some calls work fine, but others not at all.

At first I thought it was my iPhone, but I've tested the mics and they all work. It also occasionally happens to my husband's phone, so it's not likely a phone-specific issue. The problem is most prevalent when we're at home, but it does occasionally happen out and about. I've tried all of the following with NO improvements:

1) Tried with Wifi calling On and Off

2) Tried turning airplane mode on and back off

3) Tried looking for any software updates

4) Disconnected from all Bluetooth devices

5) Took to Verizon store and got them to do a network reset. They also switched me to eSim

6) Turned device off and back on.

7) Tried with speakerphone and AirPods.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried testing your phone's actual signal strength using the field test mode of your phone? The "bars" are subjective and only an approximation. In my experience, you need to have at least -110 dBm for calls to work properly - if you're regularly in the -115 or greater, your calls are going to be dropping out or people will be telling you they can't hear you. Have had this same problem for almost a year. Have had two extenders. One didn’t connect, one not complete as it was missing wire that connects to tower and a supervisor failed to order the third on January 10. Customer service is terrible!

I have had this problem for at least 2 years. I've searched forums endlessly for a solution. I've tried everything from clearing caches , device troubleshooting , full reset, etc. Based on my hours of reading forum after forum as well as my own experience, I have narrowed the causes and/or contributing factors down to:

Triggered by receiving multiple mms during a call, but most specifically one with an attachment/photo. Often experienced by those with network extenders and can be reset by putting the phone in and out of airplane mode.

Verizon has replaced my phone and the problem persists. They have ignored my follow up emails requesting more help. Mine is a business line, and is used all day for business calls. I have found that there is a workaround:

If you put your phone in airplane mode, and then activate wifi, you will have blissfully uninterrupted calls. Unfortunately, this means you can't leave your home which rather defies the purpose of a cell phone.

Hopefully my workaround will help someone else as they investigate this problem.

Your workplace doesn't have Wi-Fi? Depending on location, maybe there's another Wi-Fi network you could connect to.

We have to take our calls in the backyard or some times a certain spot in our kitchen works. This affects both mine and my husband's phone. We have done all of the above and just this last week was on with customer service for over2hours repeating the same list AGAIN!! They "RESET" our phones then at the end of the call, we were told that "the current plan you are on is no longer available which may be contributing to your issue; here is the new plan that would be best for your data habits".

We did not change our plan. How absurd, if this is true, a company would force their customers to change plans by screwing with their service.

After all this, the next phone call, they couldn't hear me. My husband called back customer service and they wanted to go through the same 2 hour runaround we had the night before. So frustrating be cause these carriers have by the you know what's

I have this same problem. Over multiple phones now and when using wifi calling which I need to use because cell service isn’t strong at my house. The only way I’ve figured to solve it is to use AirPods and not hold the phone in my hand when making calls. It works most of the time. Any insight would be appreciated

Does this primarily happen at your home? Does it always work upon leaving your home or any place indoors?

This only happens at our home. If my husband uses his airpods the issues don't arise. My zip code is 89005 and we have been told there is only 1 tower near my town.

, is Verizon the only provider in your area? If there's only 1 Verizon tower and you're having that much trouble with your calls, either the tower is too far away from you or else your home is not in the right location to be picking up signal (wrong angle, too many trees, hills/mountains/some other obstruction absorbing the radio waves). Your best bet is to ask around and see if any other carrier has better service and port out to them. If Verizon is the only carrier around, though, then I would try to get a network extender from Verizon. The other alternative is to install a 3rd party cell phone signal booster system in your home, but such systems are costly.

Thanks so much for that information, HOOPNGOOFY! It's interesting that you do not experience the issue when connected to Airpods. Is the same true for your line, if you connect the Airpods to your phone? What signal do you typically see at home?

I have same problem. When I hold the phone in my hand using wifi calling in my house, eventually the other person I am talking to stops hearing me, but I can still hear them. When I use airpods this doesn't happen. nearly as often. I wonder if my hand shields the WiFi while I am holding it and that it why the other person stops hearing me.

timwigle, thanks for sharing. Wi-Fi travels via radiowaves basically, which can be impeded by objects. Where your router is in your home is important as well as where you're taking the call. Sometimes cases or objects getting in the way of the signal on the phone itself can play a part. Does the issue when holding the phone occur more often in a paticular spot in the home or no matter where you're using your phone on Wi-Fi Calling?

It happens when I am standing 10 feet away from my router, maybe a little bit more often if I am farther away, but not a huge difference in frequency. I use a basic plastic case. It's happened to several generations of phones I have owned, and also happens to my wife's phone.

SynthpopAddict did offer some great advice for dealing with indoor coverage concerns. There is one other option aside from a booster or a network extender, and that is Wi-Fi calling. I am having the same problem. I thought I was my phone so I got a new one. I even had my plan updated and im still having the issue. It only happens when im home.

Is there any solution to this?

The WiFi extender doesn’t help either. Gives you full bars but callers can’t hear you. You can hear them. Total waste. I’ve had the extender about a month and guess what, it’s unplugged. If you reboot your phone everyday it will work a couple times, other than that, it doesn’t work. Service the past few months has been absolutely horrible. Hours on chat. Multiple trips to the Verizon store. Nothing works. Probably time to switch!

Both my wife and I have similar issues. More than 50% of the time, the other side either couldn't hear us at all or it's on and off. My line is a part of a business plan through the company I work for, my wife's plan is through US Mobile but on Verizon network. I didn't seem to have the issue prior to switching to iPhone 15 Pro (I was on iPhone 13), and my wife has iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Was the eSIM in your iPhone 15 transferred from the iPhone 13, or is it new? With your call problems only starting after you got the new phone I'm wondering if it is something with the eSIM or maybe a provisioning issue with your account. As for your wife's phone having poor call quality, a 3rd party MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) customer has the lowest tower priority possible all the time, which is why the service is so cheap. This unfortunately means you often get what you pay for, because if there is any significant amount of traffic on the towers, everybody who is a direct customer of the network owner has priority and overloaded towers have trouble with maintaining all the traffic, so it's the budget customers who will lose out.

Regarding your wife's line, she will need to contact US Mobile directly as this is a separate part of Verizon as well, and we do not have access to US Mobile accounts.

Oh, I'd forgotten to mention in my earlier post to @mrclems0n
, if your line in question is on a business account with your work, I'd try contacting your company's IT department as they may have a Verizon contact who works directly with your company who would have more "ins" on how to resolve your call quality issues.

Thank you for the insights! I think I had a physical SIM card in my 13, and when I moved to 15 Pro, I had to use eSIM. I already tried a bunch of things including reset the network etc., turning wifi calling on and off, nothing seemed to work.

As to my wife's situation, my understanding is US Mobile On Verizon (Warp 5G) is QCI 8 (same as Verizon postpaid) IF using a 5G capable device (she has a 14 Pro Max). You will maintain QCI 8 whether connected to 5G or 4G LTE. I did some research prior to switching to US Mobile. The funny thing is the line that works best is Hello Mobile (on T-mobile) with $5 monthly prepaid plan, I mainly use the plan to keep my old home number.

I understand. My main goal is not to get help directly, I mainly want to hear how others deal with situations like we have right now.

You're welcome. Hopefully you can get a resolution with either Verizon Business Support or by going through your company's IT department who may know someone to contact. Poor call quality on a business line just doesn't work.

As for the QCI number, I read something elsewhere that MVNO customers are on QCI 9 with Verizon, but the internet is full of conflicting information. However, if a different MVNO who piggybacks off another carrier is working better, it sounds like your wife would be better off porting to them.

I just switched from att to verizon. About 1-2 min into my phone conversation the other person can’t hear me. Mine is not on WiFi when this happens. I’m regretting switching now

The exact same thing has been happening to me for a few years now.

I thought it was my Google Pixel. I switched /upgraded my phone from Pixel 1, Pixel 4, then Pixel 6 over the years, same issue.
I thought it was the location. I moved to the other side of town. Same issue.
I thought it was my internet /router. Upgraded to the fastest internet speed available and I'm sitting right next to the router.
I then bought a brand new Samsung phone 2 weeks ago and switched from having a SIMs card to a eSIMS card. I was told by the Verizon store that would surely fixed the issue.
Over the past few years, I was told by Verizon, "it's not us".

TODAY...on three very important work calls, the person on the other end couldn't hear me and I could hear them perfectly fine. IT'S STILL HAPPENING. So yes, Verizon. it is you. After more than 25 years as a customer, I may have to switch carirers because I cannot run my business like this anymore.

We cannot make calls with the wifi turned off as Verizon doesn't have strong enough cell service in my neighborhood. If the wifi is off, no calls can be made.

Is there a solution to this problem, where the other person on the call suddenly cannot hear the person on the WiFi call when inside a house where there is no Verizon cell coverage? This was reported two years ago. My wife has an iPhone 14 pro and often, but always, the other party on the call stops hearing her. Then they call back and usually they can hear again. The call is not dropped - just my wife's mic seems to stop working. But her Airpods work OK.

I know how important it is to have a quality call experience, even with Wi-Fi calling, WRP2. This is indeed odd, since the call seems to work fine if you redial. You mentioned that this was reported 2-years ago, what was the outcome then? What happens if your wife tries to use Wi-Fi calling on a different Wi-Fi network?

We have 2.4GHz and also 5GHz WiFI networks in our house, connected to Verison Fios 1 Gb service, which works perfectly, including for Zoom calls and WiFi calls on my Android.

I'll try changing the network on the iPhone for WiFi to 2.4 or 5, whichever is the other choice. But both WiFi signals are very strong in the house.

My wife started getting the "caller can't hear me" problem a few months ago, right after one of the many iPhone IOS updates. But this problem does not occur on all calls - just on many of the calls, so then she redials or uses a land line.

I mentioned that this Verizon problem is 2 years old because that's when the first post appeared here about this problem. And also my wife had an important call yesterday and her iPhone kept dropping her voice - she asked me again to look into this, and from all the messages here it sounds like a Verizon problem that has not yet been fixed.

If changing the WiFi to the 2.4 GHz spectrum doesn't help, I'm wondering if it's an IPv6 issue...but you said it only happens with your wife's iPhone and not your Android. If it was an issue with IPv6 vs. IPv4 then both your phones ought to be having trouble with WiFi calling. It's possible that her iPhone isn't using WiFi and going to cellular service instead. My wife is still having this problem where the other person on a call suddenly stops hearing her. This happens several times a day including with WiFi calling at home (because we have almost no Verizon signal inside and around our house).

She took the iPhone 14 Pro to an Apple store where they checked for any problems but did not find any. Apple says it's a Verizon problem and there's nothing to repair in the phone. At home we only have IPV4 - IPV6 has always been disabled. We always have a strong WiFi signal in the house, and always a fast reliable Verizon Fios 1-gb connection.

This calling problem started around Feb. 2025 - and some people on Reddit have reported that Verizon changed something at that same time. One suggestion was to disable 5G calling so only LTE is used, but that did not help.

My Android Pixel 7 pro does not have any problems with calls.

I have been having the same issue for a few months. Only my phone is having the issue (3 other phoneson the plan are fine). They did all of the steps you had initally listed and they did not help. I decided, maybe it was the phone (iphone14) and upgraded to the 16. Within a half hour of the new phone being initiated, it happened again. I immediately called *611 and they asked if I was on wifi calling (I was) and said to give it a few days and then call back if still happening. WHat are a few days going to do? I have been with Verizon 20+ years and have never had an issue before now, but now that I am having an issue, they are no help!

First, we definitely appreciate the 20+ years with us, sdrarmand. I know how important it is for my calls to be working, and I would be frustrated if this was happening to me, and continued after upgrading to a new phone. I think we can rule out a device issue, considering that has changed, but the problem persists. You mentioned that you're using Wi-Fi calling, does this only happen while connected to Wi-Fi? What happens if youre using a different Wi-Fi network?
