Not receiving VM notifications

Question

I have an 11 ProMax, VM is set up with a custom message. I know how to retrieve my messages, but I am not being alerted that I have any waiting for me. I have missed two important messages this week. Can anyone help me? Thanks

In this case we'll be recommending assuring that the notification setting is currently set ON. 
To do so, please:
On your iPhone, open the Settings app.
Tap Notifications and then Voice.
Turn on or off the notification settings you want to change.
